We are BEYOND stoked to finally officially announce something we have been teasing for quite some time.... The first ever & band approved vinyl release of Where have all the merrymakers gone? from Harvey Danger. Pre-order it now & grab a t-shirt via the Package Deal spot and save $3 @ nslp.co/harveydanger.
This release includes a gatefold jacket with Special Liner Notes written by Sean Nelson, and an entirely new layout done by the band to celebrate the release.
"Under the long shadow of 17 years' worth of memory, I must say that listening back to the 10 songs that changed everything for us is a bracing sensation. To hear the person you were when you weren't yet who you are now is to understand how little you understood, and to recognize how little you even could have understood. This is doubly bracing when you consider that the person you were then had everything riding on the depth of his understanding. It's tempting to be hard on your past self, the one who made all those idiotic mistakes, who scorched so many friendships, who insisted he knew exactly what we was doing while steering car after car into ditch after ditch. And yet, temptations aside, it feels a lot better, and in a much bigger way, to hoist hindsight's binoculars to your deteriorating eyes and spy something you love." (full inscription from Nelson can be found in the liner notes of the vinyl LP).

In our current world of non-shared pop culture (ie not everyone experiences the same things around the same time), people today could not possibly imagine how insanely popular this song was in the late ‘90s. It was EVERYWHERE at once for a a brief period of a few months. Radio stations were playing it. Record stores were selling the album. Napster was peaking and this was one of the most shared songs. MTV was playing the video non stop. Teens all over North America were enjoying this tune. You don’t see that phenomenon anymore. Even the most popular artists like Taylor Swift don’t get to put out songs that the entire collective enjoys at the same time because people experience music in way too many different mediums at their own leisure. Pop culture is fragmented. Now you can’t even watch a show on TV and expect that even 25% of the people you talk to at work or school experienced it too.

I love the music video for this song so much. It shows the band pushing their instruments through a series of parties - aloof martini-drinkers, goths, weirdos in a rave - and being completely ignored by every single person around them. This would imply that they don't fit into any of these subcultures, and in a less cynical video, that would lead to them finding their people by the end. But no: they get on stage, set up their instruments, and rock out in front of their true audience... nobody. Bloody refreshing, and darkly comedic. I love it.

According to the CDC's numbers almost 4 times as many people have died from regular Influenza in the US since the first of the year then have from coronavirus, it's so high this year that the CDC has declared it to be at "epidemic levels", yet not one mention of that in the news. Mark my words, when the hysteria stops and a year or two when the numbers of people dead from poverty related issues starts being tallied up the handling of the coronavirus panic will go down as one of mankind's greatest blunders.

@Dod o Then death rates in Britain would drop drastically for some years afterwards because the people who are threatened by it already have one foot in the grave. 100 to 200 years ago the percentage of people over 65 was much less in society's simply because people just didn't live as long, how many YOUNG people are going die from poverty related issues over the next few years as a result of the economy crashing? I'm 55, my mother's 82, and neither one of us is being the drama queens over this whole thing then most everyone else is, and she's a retired nurse, even she understands how this economic collapse is going to affect young people.

Growing up I always thought this song was mental health related lyrically. I guess that's the beauty of music and lyrics. It all resonates with people in different ways based on ones perception... Superb! 🤘
@terrymrice
@terrymrice Жыл бұрын
They were really disappointed this song became a mental health anthem when it was designed as a mockery of the grunge movement of the early nineties. Even the name Flagpole Sitta was meant to evoke and compare the silly, attention-grabbing antics of the flagpole sitters in the 1920s to the same attention grabbing aspects of the grunge movement.Yes, they understood there were secondary (sexual) interpretations of the flagpole sitter theme and they happily played it up in the first stanza. Harvey Danger was just a college band poking fun at some of the negative vibes of bands like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam at the time.. They had no idea what was to come. Within a few weeks of Flagpole Sitta hitting the radio it became a hit and changed their lives forever. They were completely unprepared for the success.

There was just a fascinating show on NPR this morning about this song, and this band. The band was a one hit wonder, Harvey Danger. The program talked about the band getting together as kids, and none of them even knew how to play an instrument, yet they went on to make this one hit. The show also talked about the mental pain and anguish about only having one hit song. Most people they interviewed for the show didn’t know the name of the band or the song, but they knew this song when it was played for them. I love how self depreciating the video is. The band is pushing through a crowd of people having a great time to set up their equipment. On the way, people are either ignoring them, or using their equipment to put their drinks on. Then they finally get it all set up, and when this song is done, the crowd had cleared out. The lone clapping monkey at the end is perfect. 🤣

In 2001 when I was 13/14yo kid in England, I'd just seen American Pie and loved this song, so I bought the soundtrack. Unfortunately this song wasn't on the soundtrack, so I had to rent the video to review the credits to make a list of any songs it might be. I bought a Third Eye Blind record and it wasn't on that. Finally, I had to ring around local record stores to see if they had this in stock. Bought this Harvey Danger album for £15 23 years later all you have to do is enter the lyrics into google and then listen to the song on KZbin. Times have changed.
