I think Bottega has gone from a trend brand to a “full cycle” brand. It’s a brand for a woman at every stage of her life. Bottega had to prove that they weren’t just a one trick pony with the “It” bags. They’ve shown that they have the range to do these amazing colors, textures etc for a younger generation (maybe those who buy and resell bags more consistently) to someone who is a bit more…mature, wise, old money, however you would like to say it; but the person who might buy multiple bags but they use that bag exclusively until the new on comes along. You’re not going to see many early 20s fashion insta, Gen Z baddies (does anyone say baddie anymore?) with the Sardine bag. But you might see one in the crook of the elbow of an elegant middle aged woman in her late 30s/early 40s dressed in the finest of linens and other natural fibers (in various neutrals) with an older husband, two small children and a nanny. She might have the sardine bag in green but it’s that updated, darker hue of the Bottega green. So forth for the grandmother (who doesn’t ever want to be called grandma but something elegant yet youthful) who passes the age appropriate fashion heritage down to the grandchildren. She the one who has that $8,000 bag but it has EVERYTHING in it. From tissues to tax returns to a previous husband’s ashes. Telling you inappropriate stories from her youth while passing out All Sorts.

I’m extremely interested to see Daniel Lee’s future with Burberry. The brands are so different. Burberry is more of a ready to wear company than anything. I wonder if he will be reaching back in those Celine archives for inspiration, or if he intends to make Burberry more edgy. I feel like Celine’s minimal aesthetic was definitely more so Phoebe than Daniel, because his work is edgy in a timeless manner. He gives the classics a bit more depth, and he has built such a respectable reputation for himself. I’m hoping he can miraculously give Burberry a face lift and elevate the classics in a way that’s true to the brand and himself.

I love Bottega under Matthew. Certainly, not every bag is an IT bag anymore, but pieces are unique and scream quality, aesthetics. They scream ART. And that is essentially the reason I am into fashion, since I treat pieces as art. Now for the drop in sales? I think they faced some of the backlash they deserved for being extra greedy and charge those audacious amounts of money and going through price increases constantly.

I remembering buying my first Bottega bag back in 2007 and I still have it and use it!! I did NOT buy it for the logo it stood for BUT for the immaculate craftsmanship…and whoever knew , they knew. Then, I bought the mini Jodie in black and it’s impressive how this cute little lady can change an outfit from day to night! The new direction is undoubtedly more understated, which I personally appreciate because it resonates with what my style is gradually redirecting itself towards to. Generally, the fashion giant out there is big enough to meet the needs and personal styling preferences of every individual and I am all here for it!!!!

The “if I had someone else’s money to spend I’d be swiping the damn card in a heartbeat” but can’t quite bring myself to hand over my own money for the bags. I'm glad that you're discussing Bottega bags. I'm one who loves them. The craftsmanship is tops and the leather is luscious. As for the styles, I think the brand presents enough variety of styles to keep buyers across the generations content. I'm one for small-weave intrecciato. What I invested in, especially over the last couple years, are pre-owned previous-year models and some that are really hard to find now. Although some go back a decade or more, they still look as if they could have been designed and released in more recent years. Depending on what style Bottega bags that one buys, the bags can be timeless. Greetings from Los Angeles

What an incredibly thoughtful, insightful video! Thank you! I personally love new new Bottega. It is a little less flashy, you’re right, and some of the bag materials are so wacky they’re extremely cool. Whatever Blazy is doing is working for me, bc I cannot get Kate Moss on the runway in grungey “flannel” leather as my vibe for fall. Love you and your videos so much! Thank you! It looks like they're regressing, honestly. Why I loved Daniel Lee's Bottega was because it was clean, fresh, contemporary, highly interpretive and versatile. Matthieu's is surprisingly fussier, especially in terms of how he works with leather in the accessories line. I saw that sardine bag in person and while I admit it felt like it was worth the price tag (stitching, hardware, leather ofc), its use scenario and styling opportunities felt very limited for me personally. :/ The lifetime warranty IS a big perk though.

I'm loving the direction of Blazy's Bottega already! I was a fan of Tomas Maier's Bottega (especially the RTW although I was too young to buy it), and I inherited a bag from my grandma that has become one of my most used in my whole collection! Blazy hits all the right notes for me: classic but interesting, well-made artisan pieces that are instantly recognizable without being trendy or stuffy. Daniel Lee was a bit too trendy for my taste, and his RTW was horrendous in quality, cut, and fit (and it seemed always on a deep discount). Excited to see where the brand heads now!

I wonder if the lifetime warranty is transferable from owner to owner? And I think often the quality of leather, quality of craftsmanship on the manufacturing end, and attention to detail are often missing from luxury brands, but Bottega seems to always hold up that side of things. To answer your question, my opinion (for what THAT’S worth) is I don’t think they’ve lost their spark. I think their weak spot, and they’re far from alone in this, is they’re pricing themselves out of a market niche that could both grow the brand and generate a lot of income. Gucci (another heritage brand that cherishes quality craftsmanship) has been GENIUS at this. There’s always a good bag with a price point for that man or woman who saves and saves for maybe one bag every year or couple of years. That’s a lot of people and a lot of revenue. Even Chanel seems to be moving that way. Well, I veered off topic, so sorry. ❤

I was told by a Bottega SA that they were told the average Bottega bag will cost $8k by 2025. I'm a huge fan of the teen Jodie, but I'm not feeling many of these new styles. I was given paperwork for the lifetime warranty with my last two Jodie bags. Hopefully this will force other brands to do it!
@evalynn72242 жыл бұрын
That's interesting because you can kind of see it headed that way now. First the larger Cabats were about $8K, and now the Tosca is going to be $8.6K, and I'm like -- uhhhhhhh. I LOVE it, but that's a lot of money, especially since the colors don't work for me. If it were in that dark green (Raintree), I'd find a way, but I have a Fondant Arco already, and I don't really want the Tosca in a light shade -- especially not at that price.
