I personally think Burberry is trying to go in a direction where they absolutely can't win. They have a really great strength - the trench. Burberry, at least for everyone outside of the UK, has always been synonymous with British heritage pieces. The trench, the scarf, even rubber boots, and very simple wool items (like knits or wool-felt skirts). That's what people have always gone to Burberry for - ONE good trench that will last them 20 years and a Burberry plaid scarf. It's really tricky to innovate when you're known for basically one thing. They're trying to appeal to customers that AREN'T Burberry customers, who have never bought anything from the brand, while pushing their longtime customers to the curb. The people who shop at Burberry won't buy these items and they won't pay these prices, while the people who don't shop at Burberry won't care because for these prices they'll go somewhere else! It's a terrible move.

When I see 'blend' in the description I fear the hidden plastics. A price rise of 5-7% makes sense to start the repositioning strategy. However, a skirt (not 100% wool) going from £700 to £1400 is a stretch too far. They may have done focus groups to ascertain the appetite from the Far East Markets to meet these prices. But they could have been stealth-like in their approach. Or they might want to completely break the chav label.

Thank you Cassie. I am totally disappointed , Burberry has completely lost its “ Britishness” 😢. I don’t want to be “trained “ into buying what feels like a case of lost identity in lesser quality materials. Rebranding is not always a good thing and certainly not in such drastic measures where everything feels like a Burberry version of Botega 😢 such a shame!

the first skirt that you talk about actually has a lot of design and construction that is very smart, but you dont see it until you put on the skirt. it looks very straight on a hanger, but when you put it on, the pleats on the back create shape once the body fills in the skirt. it looks very figure flattering and cool because it is such a traditional simple style but the design is really great. im a stylist and just got to see the burberry fw23 collection for the first time a few weeks ago and everyone inclufing me loves it in person.

I did like the collection, i got at least 3 items, but to be fair; the bags didn’t really justify it for me… I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’m just not used to paying that much for Burberry. The prices actually haven’t changed much since Riccardo Tisici was there - the only reason they are doing this is to create more of idea of exclusivity and brand elevation so that the £2000 hand bag next to this £50,000 dress. I think the real problem here was that Ricardo Tisici was a castastrophic mistake for the brand. Christopher Bailey worked hard to bring the brand into the top echelons of luxury fashion, all this work was destroyed by Riccardo and so much brand equity was last.

The Vogue Business article on Daniel Lee's Burberry collection contains a compelling quote: "She predicts that the newness, innovation and enhanced quality of Lee’s collections will drive increased engagement, particularly with new customers, marking 'a shift from prior strategies that focused on curating the assortment to its existing customer base'." Burberry isn't interested as much in their current customer base, but are chasing a new (wealthier) customer. Time will tell if the strategy works.

Yeah I think that is what is happening. They want to attract those who shop casually at Dior and botega not those who need to save up for a piece or wait for sale. In this case, they might not run a sale at all. Most of the top lux houses just create a small quantity, and increase the price when the batch sells out. That way, they keep the price high and the people who purchased earlier see their pieces go up in the prices as time goes by. At least that is what most of the lux houses do.

Did they increase their prices AND some of their things are still made in China? Some of their lower priced bags were made in China. On the website it would say, "Imported."

Bottega extreme prices I can deal with given most RTW are leather (for the high price ones) Burberry im also confused bc the extremely priced RTW are usually with synthetic fibers (viscose, polyester etc)

Completely agree with every word you say. I've always had a great love for Burberry, I'm British and I love a trench like a pervert in a sex shop! I loved Burberry under Christopher Bailey, season after season. Under Richard Tisci I bowed out because the TB logo was the worst and he has never really done it for me, not even the Givenchy years that so many loved. I was really hoped Daniel would direct it back to same aesthetic as Christopher Bailey, which to a degree he has done that without duplicating Bailey, but this pricing is outrageous. I don't think so sunny Jim, if there is something I like I'll make my way to the sale shop in Hackney next season and see if they have it there!

I just frantically checked what they charge for an Islington trench (I bought one a year ago) - welp, that escalated quickly. I had no idea their new creative director came with such an expensive taste. 😧

It sounds like you did not know Burberry's great era with Christopher Bailey. And just in general how every luxury house has had major price increasings, so obviously burberry as well. Burberry Prorsum had prices kinda like this, but back in 2010s. And it performed extremely well

Can someone explain where Burberry sits vs Chanel? Because in my mind, they’re not high luxury at all so this pricing is crazy! I see them as mid range

I think the pricing is rather deluded....they forgotten they are NOT there. Even the online store/photography is Bottega

What was that?!? :D They could've ridden the wave of quiet luxury and maybe go in the direction of little bit louder Row (with very small tartan applications on the ready to wear) and they did this, sorry no words to describe the prices and collection. I mean I admire Daniel Lee and what he did for Bottega, but I don't think he is a good fit for Burberry. I can see him in a company like Loewe.

Good point, Burberry could easily have promoted themselves as the British version of The Row
