Has "Hatred" the Game Really Gone Too Far? Trailer Reaction

Destructive Creations showed off the trailer for their upcoming game Hatred recently that caught the attention of tons of people online. The reason? Many feel the violence displayed in Hatred had gone too far with a main character that is essentially just out to shoot, stab, and murder everyone and everything in his path. That's basically the whole premise of the game, kill people, nothing else nothing more.
I'm here to argue that this isn't anything new and this tactic has been done tons of times previously in gaming for the sake of just getting attention. That heck everything done in the game is done in hundreds of games released every single year but we just don't notice as much.

I can see where you are coming from with that. It is a little odd, especially considering that when we grow up we are told to pretty much "love thy neighbor" and this goes directly against that. This game could actually be a good release for people like this. I personally hate a lot of people. A LOT of people. Would I go out and shoot them? No. Though a game like this would be a good way of getting out the anger.

AlphaOmegaSin The comparisons you make up are not fair. THIS game does not reflect ANYTHING. And it's not the gameplay of moving around, killing people for absolutely no reason, but the design that was especially made just to try to make the player feel hatred. The stuff, that the character says for example. This game is the most unneeded game of all time, even the goat simulator was more necessary than this piece of trash. Nobody should get it, not because it's "evil" or something like that, but because it´s an unnecessary piece of trash. BUT: That's not even what should be discussed. They use the Unreal Engine 4 (or was it 3? I forgot) from Epic Games for the game and Epic Games doesn't want them to show the Epic Games logo in the trailer as they don't wanna be associated with the game by any means. BUT they can still have the license for using the engine of course.

Blau When does a game have to reflect anything? Did all the game developers come together to sign a contract stating that games must represent reality in some way? It's that line of thought that is proof we need Hatred. And there's a shit ton of other games that don't reflect life in anyway so I don't see your point in the first place.

***** That's subjective. Are you supposed to enjoy killing people in Hatred or do you just enjoy it? Postal had the ability to kill random people and some people went ape shit but majority didn't because there is still a concise difference between killing a real innocent person and killing a virtual thing that is programmed to pretend to be innocent.

The game honestly disgusts me. The trailer made my stomach churn. HOWEVER, I would defend the creator's right to make it with my life if necessary. For me, it comes down to a scenario of "kill or be killed". I'll mow down armies of people if they're all out to kill me, but when you're executing people (to be fair, virtual representations of them) that aren't a threat to you, who are begging for their life as you pull the trigger...that's way too far for me. So again, just to reiterate: The game disgusts me. I 100% back the rights of people to make and purchase the game.

This isn't fun anymore. This is just bad taste. They said there was no slippery slope. We were wrong. Fuck what games have become. We take all the negative aspects of humanity, bundle it together, and call it art, and there are too many fucking stupid people who love their precious games and movies too much to dare question the limits that were/are pushed. We have gone from Mortal Kombat to this in 20 years. What's next? Child rape simulator? It's art right? People have the right to make it, no? This trailer is what sent me to the other side of this argument. We HAVE gone too far.

***** Video games absolutely can be a work of art. There is absolutely no way this could be argued against. Art is subjective, but art can be anything that is created to convey a particular emotion or reaction.
@karlking7092
@karlking7092 10 жыл бұрын
I am an artist, and a video game designer, so I am biased but I disagree completely. Trying to define art can be tricky, but without art there is no creation, and vice versa. The sad thing is, I respect the right of these developers to make this game as much as it sickens me. I just don't have to like it. But if you think video games are not art, you are missing out on a lot of the enjoyment that many can get from games. It isn't always about high scores and killing.
@karlking7092
@karlking7092 10 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of that. The gameplay is always most important. And I agree not all games are art. I certainly don't consider Call of Duty art, but I won't argue if someone else thinks it is; to each his own I guess. But I think one of the difficult things about defining art is just that - it means something different to everyone. And to some, this game might very well be art. I would disagree, but that is only to what suits my tastes, and everyone will have their own tastes and opinions.

Michael Fowler Actually I was just being witty, the main thing I like to do in sandbox games is just drive around. When I do kill innocent people it is usually just to get the cops to chase me so I can lead them on a marry chase and watch them crash when trying to follow me off jumps. In general shooting innocents isn't much fun since they don't shoot back and offer no challenge, heck, I even turned off the auto lock since it made shootouts too boring. I play the story and side missions too, I've actually 100% GTA III, VC, SA, LCS, and IV. I can see the market for a game like this though, I'm not really one for rampages, but I have a friend that can't go two story missions without shooting a bunch of random people. He does it like Hatred too, holding them at gunpoint for a while before taking them out. Still though, outside of video games he is perfectly normal, kind of throwing the stupid "videogames turn you into a murderer" theory out the window.

Honestly, I've always been the guy that was "holy shit guys, it's not that big of a deal." But this one, I don't know. I feel like it did go a bit too far. The innocence of the victims in this game, DOES in fact make me think this is a reflection of violent outbursts in which someone who is mentally unstable does consume innocent lives. In games where there is gratuitous violent, but the victims of the killing are enemies that are being antagonized is fine in my book. It's a way to exemplify character motive and a way to drive the story. The main character of Hatred is a person who is mad at society, but does not have a definitive reason for his attacks on the individuals. And going back to the thought of this being not a direct reinterpretation of an actual event does not really matter. Because the idea of the game can still be correlated to horrific and often massacres of the innocent. Also, I believe the developers of Hatred are involved in Neo-Nazism, which is an absolute no-no, so for that reason and that reason alone, this game will get 0% of my support. In all honesty, I don't care too much on the frontier of Hatred's gameplay. But I would say it went a teensy bit too far :P

If you ask me, it's not going far enough. I want a game where you can kill whoever you want in all sorts of different and creative ways, and then do things with their corpses, like collecting them until you have enough to build a house out of them, and decorate it with guts and skulls(just one example). There should also be an option to blow entire buildings up, and add fireworks to the explosives so that when you make the whole street go "BOOM" it looks like a party. Shooting and stabbing is nice, but it gets old after a while. More options would make the game more entertaining.

The difference between this and stuff like GTA and Mortal Kombat is that killing innocent people is the primary objective of the game. In MK, your opponent fights back and it's a balanced playing field. In GTA, there are other things to do besides going on a killing spree. I'm not too offended by it myself, but I can totally understand if anyone else is.

So because it's optional to kill people in gta that makes it okay? The other arguement being that because someone can defend themselves it's okay too. People who are drafted for a war aren't innocent people anymore? It was right and okay for them to be killed because they can now defend themselves and it is war?

AlphaOmegaSin Yes, but the problem is that in GTA you are given penalties for murdering innocent civilians, in this game even if you die that's what the main character wants, to kill and be killed. In GTA, if you kill people you will be hunted by the police, either get busted or wasted, then get all your guns taken away so I hope you didn't spend tons of money on those weapons because they all go bye bye! In Hatred, it's kill and be killed, and the only people who might have a chance to kill you is the police, but you just kill them as well. Oh and the violence wouldn't bother me so much if the people weren't begging for their lives, or if we actually knew why this guy wants to kill everyone.

This game HAS gone too far. Yeah, in things like GTA and etc etc, you can kill innocent people. The difference here is yeah, story and whatever. However you're all missing the IMPORTANT THING HERE. This game is 100% pure unleaded fuel for the people who are against video games, and violent media in general. The existence of this game means more people who will attack the ENTIRE INDUSTRY and all of the people who partake in it. Just the trailer existing to begin with is going to set the argument back a decade. In GTA, there's a narrative and zero reason to kill civilians. Sure people do it, but your characters don't grow their hair down to their back, dye it black, whine a bunch of emo shit and massacre people. And it's not like this is playing it off as a horror game or anything. It's almost like the game is marketing towards the depressed suicidal middleschool/highschool kids who haven't learned anything about the real world yet. The content itself on an individual basis isn't *much* worse than what we're used to in sandboxy type games, but the combination, and the tone, and now all of the press it's getting? We as a gaming community will now have to defend ourselves from everyone else pointing at this game and going "SEE? SEE? THIS IS WHY GAMES ARE BAYUD!"

You do realize that GTA was under fire numerous times for the same exact allegations that you're presenting as a defense. you think this game is suddenly gonna be the tipping scale? Give me a fucking break, this is just one of hundreds of games to come out every year with over the top extreme content and there will be more next year and the year after and the year after. AlphaOmegaSin I don't think this is going to "tip the scale" or anything. The problem though, is when things like GTA get attacked, we can say things like "Well, story, penalties, context etc". However with this game, what are people going to be able to say to defend ourselves from this? We as gamers are already seen as fucked up people with pent up aggression, and now this is going to only amplify that notion. Remember when Peta made that Pokemon game, where they got all bloodied up and everything, because they wanted to protest the idea of animals fighting eachother? This game is in the same vein as that. It's like it was only made to damage the image of the industry.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The only people who are going to go on killing sprees after watching movies or playing video games are ones who would do so anyway. A cold blooded murderer isn't created by media or video games, they are that way to begin with. The people who believe that such things are responsible for someone's bad actions are people who believe that a person is incapable of making decisions without some sort of stimuli. Yet these are the self same people who when a person claims insanity as a reason for having killed someone that were fully aware of what they were doing and made a conscious choice to do it.

Its important to make and maintain a distinction between reality and fiction, at the end of the day you can massacre an entire civilization in a game, and it will still be just that, a game. Murdering innocent civilians is nothing new to gaming anyway, its a bit of an over reaction PR wise in my opinion. Theres certainly things in bad taste in my eyes when it comes to gaming (the postal franchise comes to mind with this), such as murdering the innocent, but that shouldn't stop companies from doing it, or keep people from enjoying it. This will always be an understandably sensitive topic, but theres no direct connection to video games and violent behavior either, I see no reason people make such a fuss over it.

Alot of times when the media tries to paint video games, as the cause of someones violence, they already had a mental disorder of some kind beforehand, its VERY important that those people are diagnosed as early as possible, and that proper care is taken to keep them and others out of harms way, so they can get the treatment they need. Edit: Another thing worth mentioning is that video games are really the same as ANY art form, If video games became illegal all of the sudden, we would have to ban all violent television, and all violent movies and books, paintings that depict death and such (you get the idea)

I struggle to understand how Hatred is worse than Hotline Miami. In Hotline, I game I and many other people loved dearly, you kill an insane amount of russian gang members and police officers (let's not forget the level where you tear apart an ENTIRE POLICE STATION). The only context you get for each mission is very obscure phone calls with no details as to why you are killing. Does Hotline get a free pass because it has techno music and bright visuals?

Do... do I really need to explain everything wrong with what you just said? First off‚ as a huge fan of HM‚ "No explanation for what you're doing" No. If you actually played the game you would know that Jacket is signed up for a patriot organization‚ 50 Blessings. Before he got back home he was in the Army‚ assisting in a war against Russians. When he came back home‚ he signed up. Beard‚ the man who gives you free things‚ is a hallucination. The reason Jacket imagines him giving him free things is due to the last time Beard saw Jacket‚ he had said "This one's on the house" he's not getting paid to kill people. Anyway‚ when Jacket begins receiving phone calls‚ he goes to investigate. He discovers the locations are full of Russian Mobsters‚ as he is combat trained‚ and used to fighting Russians‚ he is more than happy to be back fighting Russians who actually deserve to die rather than the ones he fought in the Army. It... it's a bit racist‚ but you'll hear why soon. Progress through the game and finish it‚ and you'll play as biker. Who you may recall as a boss fight. The ONLY time you can ever kill an innocent in HM is in one of Biker's act's. The one where the boss fight happened. The chapter is titled "Prank Call" biker is also in 50 Blessings. Coincidence? As you go through the game you'll find small purple dots. Get them all‚ and in the "Puzzle" option of the menu put in "IwasbornintheUSA" and in the final act you will see a computer‚ activate it and you will input the code and get the actual ending‚ 50 Blessings is the organization bent on destroying the Russo American alliance. See? HM has a story. One that I told horribly. Plus‚ Hatred is a bit disgusting to me. There's most likely no story. It's just... killing innocent people. I'm fairly certain there is going to be children in it as well? That's just... fucked up.. I mean... in HM 2 technically you kill a teenager... but he just slaughtered 26 mafia members. Scratch that. You kill a few on the last mission. You play as the son of the Mafia Boss‚ you kill the main characters.
@kyletm57
@kyletm57 9 жыл бұрын
Yes I know HM has a story, and I'm very familiar with it, but it's extraordinarily and purposefully vague. Until you piece everything together, you have no idea why you are killing hundreds of mobsters. You still didn't address the fact that you take out an entire police station, and Biker literally only kills because he was "bored". Plus Jacket kills some homeless guy and Biker, as you said, murders a shitload of civilians at the phone company. Even without knowing what the hell was going on (especially toward the beginning of the game), you, me, and thousands of people played through Hotline Miami not just enjoying ourselves, but feeling success and power every single time we killed an enemy. HM and HM 2 are fantastic games, and I am very much looking forward to hatred. When it's released, I will judge the game not on the principle behind it, but for it's quality as a game.
@fuckoffwiththehandles

kyletm57 Hotline Miami is highly stylised and self aware (the game pretty much outright asks you "You love killing people, don't you?"). Hatred isn't. You're an utter mouthbreathing fucktard if you really can't see how this makes a difference.
@kyletm57
@kyletm57 9 жыл бұрын
Gurnle The Dark Chair God First of all, calling me an "utter mouthbreathing fucktard" from the safety of your computer only proves to me that you're a gutless coward. Secondly, Hatred appears to be an extremely dark and grim game. The main character is known as the "antagonist", and the horrible acts that you commit during the game are obviously not glorified or defended. Think of the film "American Psycho", a movie that won countless awards and praise, in which the main character is a brutal and sadistic serial killer who's only motivation is the pleasure of murder. Are we supposed to like him? No. And something tells me we aren't supposed to fall in love with the long haired, trench coat wearing prick that is the star of Hatred. So again, when this game is released, I will judge it based upon it's merits as a game, rather than taking the bullshit moral high road that you have so quickly hopped aboard.

tired No obviously. My assumption is based solely on what the trailer presented as to the games premise. If the game is what it claims to be then it is disgusting and damaging to gaming as a whole. It is possible it is more than what it seems. Perhaps it has some redeeming quality or point to it but it sure does not look that way. Murdering innocents as the goal is not entertainment or art. Way to draw the attention of regulators and make their case for them, just what we all want right?
@bagnman
@bagnman 10 жыл бұрын
The premise in the trailer failed to impress me. One tiny game should not be represent the whole gaming scene to begin with. That is a easy way to get the discussion on fast discourse. There are books and movies I loathe but they don't represent the whole medium and was never intended to do so either. People should be free to play what they like. This is isometric game and not a real massacre reenactment.

I can easily see why many have a problem with Hatred. Because not only is the game brutal and cruel aesthetically, but also it is equally rotten in narrative and concept as it seems. Everything in this game is about downright committing a killing spree and it appears to be presented as realistic as one can expect it with the modern day possibilities. It is like the „No Russian“ mission in CoD extended into an entire video game. And I don't like that one bit. On a very superficial level it seems to be a perfectly valid point to say: “Grow a dick you virgin! There is brutal stuff in many video games, movies and stuff. Let alone that you can run around and randomly kill people in any sandbox game like GTA and Watch Dogs ... ” Fair enough …. it is NOT. There are glaring differences. First of all, there is brutality - and then there is brutality. Comparing this shit with Mortal Kombat is like comparing Hostel with Brain Dead. The first one is disturbing gore porn while the latter is so ridiculous over the top that one just can't take it serious. Just like Mortal Kombat. I mean, does anyone take Mortal Kombat serious? The thing with brutality is that it is not about how explicit it is. Especially not in this day and age. But about how abstract or authentic the context is. Horror games get away with it, because their brutality is obviously abstracted. Because there are no werewolves, zombies or pyramid heads for real. But this game presents it's rotten content in a very authentic way. Both - in execution (well that came out wrong ….) and approach. It is “honest” brutality so to speak. And as such very tasteless and downright disturbing. Oh and this lame argument: “It is not real! It is just code ...” Well, based on that you could defend anything … even a child molesting or raping simulator. Also comparing it with any sandbox game, where you can run around and kill everybody, is missing a few things. In all the sandbox games killing a bunch of people is just possible because these games being so open in design demands it. However, even in GTA, you do not downright execute people, let alone in Skyrim. Sure, you can play the fox in the henhouse in these games; but it never feels very realistic, mostly because how the NPCs behave (goofy voice overs, running around randomly, attacking you). Most the time, killing people in these games is not presented in a very realistic and brutal way. It overall has a “video-gamy” and goofy feeling to it. However, if you design a game with the tech, that we have available, for running amok to be the core gameplay element …. OF FUCKING COURSE it will be a dozen times more realistic and as such very disturbing. And yeah, I have a big fucking problem with that. BTW - I also hated Manhunt for it's violence porn. As did many others BTW …. but even in Manhunt there was some degree of abstraction to the violence due to the over-the-top horror themed setting. Whereas in hatred there seem to be no brakes attached on this downhill trip. I mean if that is okay, then what comes next? Maybe the aforementioned child molesting or raping simulator? Are there any boundaries?

Lorenzo S MightyJabroni I couldn't say it any better. Thank you. What's wrong with people here in the comments attacking others like me for having moral standards. Is that realy such a bad thing nowadays? I was taken aback by how needlesly brutal Lara killes her victims in the Tomb raider reboot. It was poor taste, didn't fit her charakter at all and wasn't needed at all. It was only implemented to please the Gears of War crowd who can't heve enough blood in their games. Don't treat stuff like this like it's a good thing. I have no problem killing dozens of enemys in games IF MY LIFE OR THAT OF OTHERS IS THREATEND. But who said it had to look as gory as possibe or it won't sell/won't be fun? And murdering hundreds of innocents and calling it fun is making me sick to my stomach. "Oh but it's ok because i said so and they are just pixels anyway". Not everything should be allowed or done JUST BECAUSE IT COULD BE DONE. And yes i have played many Violent games in my life and enjoy them. Games like Devil may Cry, Dantes Inferno and Ninja Gaiden. But i despise Snuff and Slasher movies, games like Manhunt and avoid "wargames" like Battlefield and Call of Duty because they are overly patriotic and glorifies war, something i know is happening right now somewhere irl and don't feel the need to see, let alone play. Im all against Censorship. But as a statement against it this is going too far. Games should entertain. The only "entertaining" thing about this "game" is the buzz it creates.

Then you proceed to draw a comparrison to something frowned opun (opossing gay marriage), which gas absoloutely nothing to do with the disussion at hand. Way to go! But when you dare to actually refer to the topic, itr is the same stuff all over again. "It's a game, not fucking real life.", is exactly as one track minded as saying "it's just code". Great, then Hitler's "Mein Kampf" are just letters, I guess. See something? It is preaty easy to argue that way. Even if it completely misses the point. It just baffles me that you find it so hard to understand that some thngs, like a fucking killing spree, shouldn't be prortrayed for our interactive, voideo gaming entertainment. it is an utterly profane approach to a horrible crime and pretty fucking decadent if I might add. Seriously, is it that hard to wrap your head around this point of view? "What do you get out of bitching about the game? If you don't like the game ignore it." Funny - severela defenders of this filth have refered to "freedom of speech" in defense of this game. But if one doesn't like it and would at least and VERY basic degree of decency being left intact in video gaming, then he/she is meant to "just ignore it". The difference between the likes of GTA and other open-world games are that the stories are focused on other things. While killing others is a goal in most missions, this doesn't mean that every civilian must die or that the people are innocent themselves. In the missions I've played in GTA (I've played every GTA) the people I'm told to "kill" are also criminals and it's a reflection on a criminal under-world and warning to not get involved in a sense. In GTA 4 there were times where I could choose to let the targets live. There are also several side things to do that include playing tennis, going to a theatre, going out to eat, etc. From the limited context the trailer for Hatred has provided it seems that the main goal and only "mission" is to kill civilians, which is not how GTA works. I'm not saying you shouldn't play the game, I'm just offering another angle to the debate. For all we know there could be a story behind all of this and the devs just don't know how to properly make a trailer that reflects that. We won't know of course until it is released, but for the time being it just seems to be a distasteful work that's out for shock value. People may also reference the scene in COD: MW2 in the airport where you slowly walked through with a mini-gun and shot all in sight. That was also super gross to me, but what a lot of people didn't realise is that you didn't actually have to pull the trigger yourself. You were allowed to just walk through it all without harming anyone yourself, or you could straight up skip the mission. Hatred seems to be that mission made into an entire game which is why it's a bit different than other Rated M games. Once again I'm not saying not to play it, in fact ESRB gave it an AO rating so it really won't be readily available to a lot of people and I'm content with that, I'm just offering a different perspective.

Or the fact that you can burn down houses and wreak endless havoc on the environment around you through multiple means. You're judging the game because you're offended. Just admit it. And yeah, in GTA if you run over countless pedestrians, beat prostitutes to a bloody pulp, rob banks, and throw molotov cocktails into crowds of yuppies then I guess you're just labeled "a dick" not a psychopathic criminal.

I actually if you look around you'll see the debs wanted to make a fun shooter from a over the top perspective. But when it came to story design they felt as though too many games gave context to mass murder, however they felt as though mass murder cannot be justified. Therefore they didn't justify it in their game. Besides how many top view first person shooters do you pay attention to story wise.

Like I said in that video, moronic games like COD praise you for being a murderer. You're an american "hero" that just goes to other places and kills everyone in sight. And then they say how awesome you are for doing that. THAT should be something to watch out for, considering your kids might get that message. Especially since it's made to be as realistic as possible. On the other hand, GTA, where you have ridiculous amounts of violence, you clearly know it's just fucking around, and the police come after you to take everything you own if you so much as shoot a bullet near people. So I don't really get why this Hatred game is getting so much attention. I mean, it's clear that the guy you're playing as is a psychopath, and anyone that shares his was of thinking is already too far gone. You won't get the wrong message there.

The theme is what's riling people up IMO. The game isn't about shooting, it's about trying to cause fear, chaos, terror, etc. Whilst games like GTA use that in a humorous way, this game just wants the player to feel like the killer in a public shooting.
@AlphaOmegaSin
@AlphaOmegaSin 10 жыл бұрын
Right....so in GTA they do run away screaming. In Punisher on PS2 and XBOX they beg for mercy when you decide if you should run their face through a buzzsaw. In the Elder Scrolls games you can kill entire innocent villages of people that never ever return. Heck in certain games killing innocent people changed the dynamic of the game, innocent people that could not fight back no less. look at Fable and Infamous. Now also keep in mind that is just the tip of the iceberg that you're currently ignoring of titles that offer the same options and there's plenty more
@DreamcastGuy

AlphaOmegaSin The primary difference is in those situations is that it is not the objective. It is POSSIBLE but not ENCOURAGED to kill everyone in a violent manner. Putting a gun in a crying woman's mouth and pulling the trigger for points is just something that, personally, feels deeply, deeply wrong. I write about games as an art form so when I see things like this it feels like brutal shock art and hurts the medium in general.

DreamcastGuy Same has been said about the music and movie industry when certain things get released. AlphaOmegaSin It's not about the option to do it, it's about the way the game uses it. You don't really pay mind to what you're doing in the mentioned games, and it's often done in a humorous way, with nothing that could point you towards how dark the things you are doing actually are. This game, however, thrives on the immorality of those actions. It wants the player to enjoy the fear and suffering of their victims. Which is completely fucked up.

The developer has already made it known that they are reacting against the "politically correct" trend in gaming these days, so any controversy on the part of the public is giving them exactly what they want as well as free publicity. They're basically doing what DOOM did in the 90's (Look at Hatred's logo. Look familiar?) Actually I think this game is pretty relevant in this day and age. People like the main character actually exist in real life. If you pay any attention to the news you should know that. Also the topic of a "genocidal crusade" comes up in the trailer (ISIS anyone?) This game is a reflection of and a reaction to the times we live in. I'm hoping they will delve deeper into the characters mind and explain how he came to be that way. That's the only way I see this game actually being worth anything. This is a good opportunity to discuss a dark part of human psychology. I don't that happening though (I doubt the creators are that smart) , but its only the 1st trailer so who knows where this project will end up. So far it just seems like a mindless controversy machine which is fun and all but not very interesting in the end.

People say this game is pulling back video games as an art form, and the developer himself said the he wanted to eschew political correctness, and video games as art, but in a way he created a piece of satire that not many games have achieved yet. Michael Haneke did a similar thing with his films Funny Games. He created two very violent movies that made commentary on violent movies. People constantly say that games should try to emulate films, but they want them to do it by their hyper-sensitive standards. If filmmakers had people constantly trying to stop the production of "offensive" films, we wouldn't have films like A Clockwork Orange, Blue Velvet, The Wild Bunch, or Apocalypse Now. SJW gamers want games to grow up, but they need to grow up by exclusively following their values.

The media is going to eat this up and it's going to make gamers look bad. "OMG GAMERS HAVE GONE TOO FAR!! NEW GAME ABOUT MASS MURDERS!" gaming as a whole is going to get more hate. On a personal level I'm not getting this because it bothers me. In any other game there is a reason to kill someone. And If I'm playing a sandbox game like GTA or saints row I can kill people but that's not what the game is about. Now have I gone on murder sprees? Yeah, I'll run people over. Blow up random cars. but it's really not serious. It just bothers me to be stabbing someone as they beg not to be killed. Not for me.

I personally disagree that this is no different to MK, GTA or Manhunt. Mortal Kombat is killing people who would kill you without a seconds thought. You are also killing people who are them self willing to join a tournament where you are encouraged to finish off your opponent in the most gruesome way imaginable. Hatred you are going around killing everyone who are just minding in their own business. GTA gives you a choice to kill innocent people, hatred fores you to kill innocent people and it's the only reason to play the game. GTA on the other hand also allows you to just drive/race cars, fly air vehicles, play darts etc. and the main missions are for the most part not simple killing innocent people. Now Manhunt like Hatred forces you to brutally and sadistically kill people but like MK, the people you kill are not innocent people and would brutally murder you without a seconds thought. Maybe I'm a hypocrite for enjoying MK, GTA and Manhunt but having no interest in this game in the slightest Hatred is one of very few games I would never play due to the violence. In fact the only other game I remember never being interested in a game because of violence is Clocktower 3 on PS2.

Here's the thing though. It's not pushing *any* boundaries. The only difference between Hatred and say, GTA V, is the context of the game. The goal is killing in Hatred, but in GTA V, all 3 main characters are just as morally corrupt as this guy, except that their goal is to make the "big score". They kill indiscriminately either way. And like AOS said, there's millions of plotless murders going on every day in CoD and Battlefield, or even Destiny for that matter (no I'm not making a joke on the game's story there, lol). Personally the only ground Hatred breaks is in it's simplistic approach of not having an intricate reason to kill. Maybe it's just me but it's really not all that compared to what else I've experienced in gaming "gore".

Playing a game like this won't suddenly make me a rampaging murderer, if that were the case, I am sure it would have happened by now in the last 20+ years I've been a gamer. Game companies should be able to create the titles they want so long as people aren't getting hurt over it, or they belittle a tragedy that may have occurred in the real world like you pointed out.

I found the game trailer trying too hard to be edgy and dark for me to take it seriously. The voice actor for the main character even sounded like someone trying to pull off a generic sociopath vibe straight out of an 90s horror B-movie. I'm not offended by this game by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm not playing it because judging by the actual gameplay in the trailer, it looks dull. Kudos to the developers who know how to play with everyones emotions and get free publicity.

***** Well, part of the point of the game is that there's no narrative, no backstory, no plot, nothing. Granted, story is only a part of what makes a game into a great game, but in the end here you just have a "shock" game that will eventually lose it's novelty among the hardcore gamers. It's just an attention grabber that most people will be done with in a week (if even that long). The kind of game you play to say you played it. That's the total opposite of what the developers are probably trying to go for, which is ironic because they're marketing it as this hardcore game, when it's only going to end up being as cosmetic as playing FEZ.

Alpha I love your vids and respect you immensely. I will probably be avoiding this game just because of what you said about it though. I am all for video game violence and what not. Hell I am in college right now working toward actually making video games some day. But if what you say is true about the game, where the main character is pretty much sociopath-psychotic who decides he is just going to go out side of his house and just end all life that he see's because it doesn't fit his visions of what it should be? Yeah. Probably gonna skip this one. I mean there is senseless killing in Grand Theft Auto all the time. But it isn't the main point of the game.(Though GTA V did have a pretty crazy character who loved killing) I don't know. Something tells me I will actually look at this game from a developer perspective. Good vid as always. Extremely informative and well thought out argument as always. But I think I am just gonna pass this one by.

Love this comment, it pretty much explains my view too. I most likely won't ever play the game. Although I would add that the biggest issue I see with the game is the lack of context for the main characters motivation. The other games all, that I know of, had a reason behind the violence, Mortal Kombat was saving the realm, Manhunt was survival, however in Hatred (Which is an awesome title for it, good choice devs) there doesn't seem to be any. If say, his wife had been murdered (pretty violent option) and he snapped, there'd be at least some motivation to the violence. I think that could be why so many people have lost their shit over it. Personally I loved Manhunt, and I have NO problem with violence in games, I actually applaud the Devs for pushing the boundaries and sayig "To Hell with all this Politically correct bullshit". But for some people, especially in places where things like this have happened in real life, I can understand some of the frustration and reactions.

I dont think any video game is offensive (well.. maybe Harvester, thats borderline repulsive yet awesome). Violence was never one to bother me in video games. MiyuChan Well it does have a subtle story. You I'm pretty sure are in a sound state of mind irl, but this game puts you in the mind of someone who isn't. This is letting you see what was going on in the minds of people who have done fucked up things like rampage and see their hatred for life. The way that they don't see life as some beautiful place but a dark, dreary place full of suffering and pain. He didn't do this from some spur of the moment I-played-a-game-now-im-crazy-media-bullshit reason, he is literally mentally psychotic and doesn't view anything with a grain of happiness because he's so deranged. This is exactly how the mind of a cold blooded killer should be portrayed and can possibly help the argument that mental illness and being not right in the head causes people to be really sadistic.

And that's the great thing about it. For once there's no thin vale, no justification, no spoon fed reason. This time players have to accept they're the full on no grey area bad guy and some people just are incapable of doing that. The line of reasoning to justify slaughter in GTA but not in Hatred is childish to begin with but people that honestly need a reason to slaughter in a videogame really need to learn to detach themselves from reality while playing.

The difference between Hatred and all the combat games is this. In games like Call of Duty, Mortal Kombat, and all the others, is that two equally matched opponents are facing off against each other. They know what they are getting into, and they have been training a long time to do what they do. Kill. I'[m saying that killing is right, but in that case, its being done by people put themselves in that situation( or at least have been trained to be able to cope with that situation). But in Hatred, the people you are killing stand no chance( Besides maybe the cops). They are simply going about their day, and then some sociopath comes up and kills them. No reason other than he hated them. So, form the start there is no point in this game, even from just a gameplay perspective. Hell, at least in games like GTA, you are fighting other gangs. Once again, people that have put themselves in a situation that may result in them being killed. I really just see this games as just bad taste, with little to no point. I would rather be shooting my way through a gang of mobsters than a group of ordinary people. Because at least those mobsters will actually pose some sort of a challenge. And don't start the crap with its just a game. Being "Just a game" doesn't stop it from still being in bad taste and just wrong. You all do realize that this kind of shit is only going to further blacken the image of video game? Right? Its only going to give anti-video game nuts more ammunition, by showing everyone this "Murder Sim" to everyone, and saying: 'See, we were right! Video Games are just machines to teach our young. PLEASE! WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?"

UltraDTA Violence in video games is still comical, though. It's just no realistic. If you go with a Serbian Film (not that I enjoy that film), it's still fiction, it's a difference to reality. For example, when I watch a sport game and someone falls, I will feel his pain. Or when I watch the news (and really, reality is the worst thing) I feel for people. Fiction isn't reality.

You are wrong and this game based on its premise is disgusting!!! The reason why you are killing is imo deciding wether it's ok or not. Modern Warfare 2: Killing bad guys to safe others = cool Modern Warfare 2: Being put into the shoes of bad guys and killing innocent people on an airport = nooooot cool (and it still isn't) So when you are in a tournament and fight to the death I think it is legidimate to kill your opponent. There is nothing wrong with that. Or when you have people assaulting you who want to take your life. But killing innocent people because you do not like your own situation and therefor want to die and take so many people with you is twisted and wrong and nobody should have something like this to play. If you need something like hatred to get over a bad situation I would recommend therapie because something is wrong with you!

TheThrashyOne There is a difference when we talk about games bringing up the issue of violence or games that give you allegedly a opportunity to deal with it. when you have such an issue I think it is better to talk with someone about it rather then playing a game where you run over innocent people or where you slaughter them! Just like you I don`t believe that games would be the source of twisted thinking but by all means I wouldn`t say it is a good thing to deal with it via games, especially not this one, and that was kinda what Alpha suggested which is all kinda wrong!

I can only agree with you on the part that it is just a game and no one in their right mind is going to do whatever he sees on a game in real life, but i disagree with everything else you talked about. First of all i am not with the guys that are trying to ban it or are screaming "burn them", i just disagree with your logic. You are comparing games like MK,TCM and battlefield. Well in MK you are killing willing opponents so it doesn't matter the way they died and in TCM it is just pixels you can't see anything gruesome or hear screams etc. Same goes for battlefield you are killing soldiers. In hatred though you are killing civilians who are begging for their lives and you go on killing them like cattle. You see any similarities in those games? Have you forgotten what happened with the airport terrorist attack in modern warfare 2 and the controversy behind it? Don't try to lamp every single game that has death and violence in it on the same page as a game like hatred. Finally when you say that you can just avoid the game etc, where can we draw the line? shall we leave the industry do whatever it wants? So if they released a game with child pornography that would be ok too then? By your standards it's just code so nobody cares. I don't know if all the hate towards the game is justified but atleast you have to acknowledge that it isn't just another run of the mill game like you are making it to be. What's next? a game where you just torture people in the most graphic way possible? By the way watching a vile act and actually doing it is different so watching innocent people die in movies isn't the same when you actually get to be the one to kill them.

"where can we draw the line? shall we leave the industry do whatever it wants?" If you value the uninhibited freedom of expression, yes. And keep in mind that the industry is changing. Up until recently, game developers had no choice but to bend over backwards for special interest groups and censor shit that "crossed the line", for fear of retailers refusing to put their products on the shelves. Now that people can develop games to distribute digitally, those restrictions are slowly starting to thin out, at least on the PC gaming end of things. That said, Alpha's logic of "if you don't like it, don't play it" is perfectly valid. Bottom line, the "right not to be offended by anything, ever" is one that doesn't exist, never has, never will, and quite frankly, never should. Society needs to learn to put on its big boy pants and let people play the shit they want to play. There is jack shit to be gained from saying "No, games like this shouldn't be made because it'll plant ideas in sick people's heads." Sorry, but anyone who actually thinks that way is a fucking moron who thinks they have human psychology - by far one of THE most complex things we could ever hope to understand - all figured out.

I don't diagree with the main point of your argument, which is, I believe, this is a videogame. However, your supporting arguments, and parallels aren't very on point. Mortal Kombat is a game about a fighting tournament in which all parties involved are willing participants. CoD, Battlefield, and Counterstrike are military styled shooters involving, once again, willing participants. The parallel between games like GTA could be made, but that falls into the realm of players choice. Manhunt was gratuitously violent, but that doesn't really work, since the player is more or less forced into participation. I'm all about pushing the envelope, and challanging peoples morality. I think it's good, for the most part. The thing you have to keep in mind is that there are people out there, many of whom are directly, and intimately affected by real life experiences that may be similar to thosedepicted in the game who may find it tasteless, and insensitive. It's easy to say simply don't buy the game if you don't like it, but then, we've never had to endure the emotional impact of having a school, or community, or family brutally shot, or stabbed to death. This is going to be controversial in the same way that Carmageddon was when it first came out, but it's still going to be available for purchase, so getting up in arms, so to speak, and minimizing the impact it may have on the survivors, and victims of these tragedies only makes the side of the developers, and fans seem disconnected, and needlessly cruel to people who havealready been through quite enough. When it comes to the "other side" of the argument, there's unlikely going to be a rational point of view from extremely emotional events. Fuck the social justice warriors, though. They're only involved to get clicks, and views, and their arguments typically come from under researched, cherry picked sources.

Most of you have failed to accomplish something in life or gotten in trouble simply because of context. In Mortal Kombat it is an epic fighting game with a backstory where you're trying to overthrow a tyrant in Shao Khan or Shang Tsung or whatever. In GTA (which isn't great) the main goal isn't murdering people but your trying to accomplish some kind of goal like improving your standing in life (albeit illegally). Its also really satirical. But this game is about blatantly going out and killing INNOCENT PEOPLE for the sake of just KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE. There is nothing else to the game. That is PSYCHOPATHIC. Just who is that supposed to appeal to?

And all those games where you kill zombies for the sake of killing zombies is ok because they are zombies, right? But once you change the name from "zombies" to "humans" it is so much worse now? It's like the bullshit that happened with Medal of Honor. So many people flipped out because in multiplayer, one side was called "Taliban" and the other was "Marines", and you could "play as the Taliban and kill American soldiers". But when they changed the name from "Taliban" to "Op-For" (at least I think that is what they changed it to), everything was perfectly ok. It is just plain hypocritical. Freedom of speech is just that - freedom. It isn't "freedom of speech of things that I approve of". If you don't like the idea, don't play it, it is that simple. I don't like sitting around watching people get tortured, so I don't watch the Saw or Hostel movies. If some people enjoy that, power to them. Do I find it a little odd? Sure, but it is just a movie.

IconoclastXVII Yes being a zombie makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The living dead who do nothing but kill people no shit you're gonna kill them. You're not killing them for the sake of killing them your killing the zombies because they're killing people what kind of comparison is that? If Zombies weren't killing people they wouldn't be making more zombies. Context freaking matters 100%. And you need to actually read the constitution because your usage of it is the same as a skinheads. It's not just pure freedom of speech you are free to speak your mind until it encroaches on the rights of others. So you can't just say whatever you want. I'm not saying ban the game forever but I'm saying the adult only rating and severely restricting it makes absolute sense.

So, just because there are zombie, automatically they do nothing but kill? In Dead Rising, where all those zombies are just sitting around in the mall, not hurting anyone, how are they "killing people"? Or, better example, Far Cry 4 where you go to this region and start killing people for no reason. Nobody is making you kill them, and you can beat the game without ever touching a gun. And since you are basically calling me a skinhead, please give me ONE example on how me SAYING anything can violate the rights of ANYONE.

IconoclastXVII Wow reading comprehension man. I in no way called you a skinhead I'm saying you used the first amendment argument in the same way you often hear people uneducated about what the first amendment actually says do (such as skinheads which I'm sure you are not.) Also in the story of dead rising yes the zombies are trying to kill you. You see that zombie that has normal clothes on and is "walking around the mall" how did they become a zombie exactly? Oh that's right they were turned into a zombie by zombies! That is a horrible example, infact it's probably the worst one you could use as a counterargument to mine. It's about the story of the game. Like I said context is everything in life. And if you stand in the middle of a pack of zombies in dead rising they will kill you. And you are also rescuing people from Zombies in dead rising. You are trying to survive, it's kill or be killed. Zombies are a terrible example anyways because they're dead in the first place, they aren't even people so normal laws don't even apply to them.

IconoclastXVII If you're having trouble understanding the difference between killing innocent people and surviving against a zombie apocalypse you need a lot more help than I could provide a comment. It's kinda scary knowing people actually think like this, Goodbye.

I guess everyone forgot about the game State of Emergency, in which your sole purpose is to cause chaos, riots and kill massive crowds of people. Honestly, the thing that pisses me off is the total hypocrisy of people. This was a great video and presented everything I have been thinking about this topic, kudos to you my friend!

for some reason video games don't seem to be afford the same protection under the first admendment as other art forms and other media. and that is a hypocrisy.
