“Oh, I hope you felt appropriately guilty afterwards.”
In today’s CineFix Not 100, Alex and Calabro are talking about Jackie Brown, Quentin Tarantino’s 1997 follow-up to Pulp Fiction. In the 25+ years since Tarantino adapted the Elmore Leonard novel, Rum Punch, Jackie Brown has managed to age like Pam Grier herself, which is to say, incredibly. Cal and Alex wax on about how this is Quentin’s most traditional film (but not in a bad way), how Alex’s cool flight attendant grandma introduced her to this film, and how Pam Grier, Robert De Nero, Samuel L Jackson, and Robert Forrester turned in some truly excellent performances.
Here we go. Dan’s Algorithm. When you absolutely, positively need to watch 100 movies, in no particular order, accept no substitutes.
CineFix Top 100 is produced by Tayo Oyekan, with Director of Photography, Jamie Parslow and Technical Producer, Marhyan Franzen. Our Executive Producers are Clint Gage, Dan Parkhurst and Corrado Caretto. Logo and graphic design by Eric Sapp and title animations by Casey Redmon.

As a young person, I can see how Jackie Brown might not hit like some of his other films. But it makes sense that it grows on you as you age.

I just watched Jackie Brown for the first tie a few weeks ago and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It was the only tarantino I hadn't seen yet and I genuinely think it's up there with my favorites of his.

I remember when Reservoir Dogs came out. I came out of the theatre knowing everything just changed. For the better. After that we listened to the soundtrack every day until Pulp Fiction came out... Jackie Brown I learned to appreciate later on, when the immensely high expectations gave way. Now I love it more and more every time I watch it.

Definitely Tarantino's most mature film. I like going back to his movies as an adult getting much older. But "Jackie Brown" gains more appreciation for me now than the others.

Jackie Brown is my favorite Tarantino movie. I love the warmth of it despite the harshness of the world, I love De Niro hitting the bong, and of course Jackie Brown is just a great character. Pam Grier is amazing but somehow the MVP to me is Robert Forster who provides the maturity this movie needs in the childishness that Tarantino’s movies are defined by

This IS MY FAVORITE Tarantino film, with Death Proof as a 2, alongside Pulp. Didn't get to see it in theaters. But every time I see it, I feel like I'm in a moviehouse. Not only is it my favorite QT movie, it's in my top 10 films ever. It feels like a grindhouse film.

I've always regarded Jackie Brown as being up there with Tarantino's absolute best... considering that he had to follow up Pulp Fiction, you have to give him credit for dialing it back a little, trusting his instincts and telling an excellent story.

Jackie Brown is a great movie...for top 200 list! Not on par with Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Pulp Fiction (those two are masterpieces for all times, top 50 ever)...but on par with any other Tarantino movie! Pam Grier deserved more recognition for her role, one of the greatest subtle movie heroines (the entire cast is simply brilliant), the pace is steady, characters fully developed - truly underrated Tarantino movie. Great conversation, enjoying every single one of your Cinefix top 100 as well as Not top 100 - you're great!

As much as Tarantino's fingerprints are on this movie. For all the times this video mentions this movie is structured traditionally, and has well written characters... there's hardly a mention this is based of a really good book Rum Punch. Elmore Leonard is a great writer & Tarantino loves his books. I think that's why he held back on his style to honor the book.

This movie kind of lacks the cheeky tone Tarantino's movies are usually known for. Most his movies usually had this somewhat "movie within a movie" vibe, but not this one - This one feels earnest in being about the characters. Oh, it aged wonderfully. I rank it as number two of Tarantino's best.

I’ve always had an old soul. I really wanted to see Jackie Brown when it first came out, but I was a broke teenager. Finally saw it a few years later and it’s still my favorite Tarantino movie. It’s hard to be a fan of his movies for many reasons. But in this case, the reason is that many of his fans take way too long to mature beyond Reservoir Dogs or even Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. His best work is less regressive and reactionary, and Jackie Brown fits that bill.

Jackie Brown has always been my #1 Tarantino film (for speaking to me on a personal level and for being better the more I watch it). My introduction to Tarantino was Reservoir Dogs (fantastic) and my follow up was Pulp Fiction, a film that deserves all the praise it gets but it did not speak to me the same way… a little bit of a mess, but a fun one.

Jackie Brown was always my favorite Tarantino movie, and most people don't agree. I prefer to watch things without gratuitous onscreen violence. And I love the practical realism, as opposed to over the top cartoonishness. It is about a brilliant woman who thinks on her feet, and is determined to improve her situation in life. And yes, Kill Bill is also about that, but in an entirely different way. Jackie is my favorite character from any Tarantino movie I've seen. I'm not partial to him, but his movies are good. Maybe the reason I prefer Jackie Brown is because it's unlike many of his other movies, and I'm not one of his rabid fans.

the video that they watch with the girls in bikinis shooting guns, that was a recreation of a real thing from the late 80s early 90s. Lenny Magill produced a series of videos called "Rock and Roll" that featured girls shooting guns and occasionally basic break down of the firearms. to be fair he produced a number of videos on guns ranging from the clinical (videos about every facet of a single gun) to the bombastic (the rock and roll series) in the days before the interwebz and youtube this kind of information was not always easy to come by.

As with many people I believe the first Tarantino movie I saw was pulp fiction and I was hooked because before then I had seen kids movies as I was 13 and I never knew movies could be that cool. Since then Tarantino has been my favorite director and say what you will about him and even if you don’t like his movies you can’t say he doesn’t care about his art and that his mare boring which I beIs the main downfall of modern movies because even if they are “bad” as long as they are entertaining they are watchable.

This series seemed like such a good idea, and I've been excited to see most of them uploaded (because I like the movie they are discussing) but can never make it more than 5 or 10 minutes into the video, the hosts just aren't relatable (or even likeable really) It feels more like I'm sitting in a Dennys after the movie listening to people in the next booth discussing a movie they didn't understand... Great movie though...

I adore Clint (longtime fam) and have quickly come around to Cal. But, I. can't. Stand. Her. She doesn't get the movies even when she claims to love them and is mostly just piggybacking on the boys' opinions... Except when she is just so determined to love the female characters in every movie. I barely made it through this episode bc I love this film and Cal was borderline making fun of this chick through most of it. I usually don't like to be such a hater but, man! She has irked me since day one of this series! Ok. Sorry for the negativity... That being said, I consume this series voraciously!

The answer is definitely "no." JACKIE BROWN wasn't very good when it was new and will never be very good. QT took most of the way he writes dialogue from Elmore Leonard and there was great anticipation going into this movie because it was adapting Leonard. Unfortunately, this was the first time QT's self-indulgence, which would become a problem with several of his future productions, overcame him. He basically took a good, tight book and turned it into a ponderous bore of a movie. It has it's moments. They're very few and far between. Even screwed up the ending, which was a crime.
