“Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids.”
Kill Bill, the two part revenge epic from Quentin Tarantino, is a bloody, pulpy, pastiche fueled homage to martial arts and spaghetti westerns. But is the story of The Bride and her quest to take out the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad original? Or is it just a greatest hits mix tape of borrowed tropes? Or does that even matter? Clint, Cal and Alex talk about that, plus the proper deployment of bleeps, Samurai honor and an easy Halloween costume.
Meanwhile, Dan’s algorithm needs Japanese steel...

I'm currently assisting with teaching an Intro to Film Studies class, and our most recent assignment was genre remakes/reimaginings. I literally had at least 5 different students discuss "Kill Bill Vol. 1" and "Lady Snowblood." This channel has the perfect timing.

Alex is so absolutely on point with the fact that so much of what makes this movie good is that the cast is primarily women, because everything Clint says as a negative is 100% correct but is invalidated (imo as a woman) by the fact that the Bride and O-Ren Ishii are the two coolest characters to ever exist

Recently, Denis Villeneuve was asked about his thoughts on Tarantino not seeing Dune. His response was "Who cares?", which apparently made the crowd react positively. I like some of his movies, and KB was a lot of fun (Uma Thurman as action star really worked). But QT seems like the guy that likes to let people know he has personality, and is "into" cool stuff. And it does seep into his movies, which can be off putting. Liked the discussion.

It's funny 'cos I agree with Clint on the cringiness of Tarantino putting '4th Film by Quentin Tarantino' in the credits, bleeping The Bride's name, etc. - these things and other bits have always bugged me about the film too, but at the same time the stuff that works for me REALLY works. Just off the top of my head: when Uma wakes up from her coma and realises her baby's gone, that shit gets me every time; the fight with O-Ren (the music is perrrrrrrrfect); the lovely moment where she looks over the swords (yeah okay, bit icky that they're weapons, but the idea of entering some sort of shrine or mecca and being in awe really hits). And that Anime sequence is fantastic. I remember seeing the film in the cinema and one of my friends was like "worst film I've ever seen", whereas it always clicked with me, and I think a lot of that was to do with me being brought up on video games and this just scratching some particular sort of itch for me, which is also why I've always preferred it over Part 2. So I do agree with a lot of Clint's bugbears about it, but I also just really love it like Alex and Cal.

I get what Clint’s saying. There’s a reason I never rewatch part 2 and I always come back to part 1, and that’s probably because they talk a lot more in 2 and I don’t like how the dialogue is written (also his objectively wrong Superman opinions) But man, part 1 is just too damn fun and it’s really too bad Clint can’t appreciate that.

It was off base then and off base now, which I think is the point. A guy like Bill is obsessed with power and dominance for selfish purposes, so to him the concept of someone born with incredible power choosing to live humbly and benevolently rather than abuse that power can’t be because they’re just a good person with good morals, it has to be so they can demonstrate their contempt for weakness. Take Pai Mei and Bill for example, though neither are examples of good, they’re examples of power in different forms. Pai Mei lived in his temple in his traditional garb, living a simple life practising kung fu and eating good old rice, living very modestly, yet when he and Bill meet in Kill Bill 2 he kicks Bills ass effortlessly (though off screen). For someone who looks and dresses like a simple old Chinese man he demonstrated incredible power and dominance without difficulty. Bill on the other hand, all flash and performance. He never handled the Brides assassination himself, he had his Deadly Vipers beat her, a pregnant woman, senseless in the church, and only when she was too weak to fight back he shot her in the head like an animal, not even letting her respond to him properly before doing so. Then when she was in hospital years later, he had Elle Driver almost poison her only to call it off with some bullshit reasoning about how he won’t dishonour her that way. Every member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad the Bride fights head on, with the exception of Bud who admittedly got the drop on her, but the point is she fought face on with honour against dishonourable people. Bill exploited her child in front of her to get her to drop her guard, then before she could attack him he shot her with the dart gun and paraded over her with his ideas of power and the nature of humanity, again only in a position where he could ensure he wouldn’t lose by disabling her. The real telling quality of his attitude is when he inspects her sword, and when the Bride kills Bill with the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique. His first reaction is complete shock, asking her, “Pai Mei taught you the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique?” As if he couldn’t believe it. Why would Pai Mei teach the FPPEHT to her? What’s so special about her or what she fights for? How could Pai Mei, who so easily beat Bill, teach her this ultimate technique? What was so special about her that Hattori Hanzo forged her the greatest sword in all the world? Pai Mei and the Bride demonstrated power through their actions, with humble goals. Pai Mei was a teacher of an old way of fighting, and the Bride was a mother who wanted revenge for what she thought was the death of her child. “A teacher and a mother, what’s so special about them?” Bill though, Snake Charmer himself, he’s all about outward performance rather than action. A mononym for a name, a theatrical alias, control over a deadly group of assassins he himself assigns theatrical codenames to, who kill for him rather than get his own hands dirty, how could he not see himself as above the common man by sheer right? And so, how could he not see Superman’s life as Clark Kent as anything more than a mockery of what Bill perceives as humanity, something he feels above? Bill never showed any real humanity or compassion that didn’t get him something in life, and yet he was finally defeated and proven wrong by a woman fighting for the most human reason of all: love. So all in all he was wrong, but the reasons he was wrong are reflective of his character and IMO really strong writing This is from Reddit
@RandyWhite-e6t
@RandyWhite-e6t Ай бұрын
As others have mentioned, Bill is quite evil, by almost any definition. He can't help but think that there's got to some kind of scam to what Superman does, because kindness and empathy don't exist for Bill. It's simple enough to disprove Bill's argument, in that the person Bill is describing isn't someone who just goes out and does good for free. Bill's Superman doesn't like humanity and as such would not selflessly save them; he might be superhuman, but he isn't a, much less THE, super-hero. Bill literally CAN'T understand Superman, really. This is another comment from Reddit

One thing about this film’s tonal shifts is that seems to me to be because it’s a mish-mash of homages to old samurai and kung fu films. Tarantino is sharing all of these great moments from films the majority of Americans may not have ever seen. It’s all sorts of Asian film styles smashed into one film, unlike his other films, which are more tonally consistent because they don’t need to make references since American audiences would be more familiar with them. We know WW 2 films, we know crime films, etc.

Kill Bill Vol.1 is maybe the singularly most *entertaining* film ever. The only other movie that comes to mind for me is Raiders of the Lost Ark. I couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw it -- it's a really funny film! So over the top, campy, and ridiculous. Whereas Clint experiences this as "Tarantino smelling his own farts", I experience it as being in on the joke. As a fan of film and music, I sometimes like to find parallels between movies and albums. For Kill Bill fans, I recommend Mr. Bungle's California as a companion piece. It's similarly eclectic and cartoonish, yet also a completely brilliant masterpiece.

I thought the name bleep was, for the sake of the credits, to credit Uma to be playing The Bride, paying homage to the source material before revealing her name in the sequel. If it was Tarantino's intent to credit the source-and-titular character to Uma Thurman, then bleeping the name is necessary or else the credits would read her being credited to playing Beatrix Kiddo instead of The Bride. . And yes, Tarantino it's cool for artistically expressing accreditation. He knew he would credit Uma Thurman playing several character names in the sequel.

funny, I'm sorta with clint on this one. it's a little extra ironic for me as i *am* a fan of kung fu flicks. when kill Bill first came out, i think everyone in my social group was sure I'd love the film. and i don't think i disliked it right away, though i think i was mostly caught up in the hype and popularity at the time. but i know for sure as time has gone on I've realized i don't like the movie all that much. maybe not for the same reasons as clint, i think i can appreciate "cool for cool's sake" like alex and cal can, but i think for me it ends up being that the movie pastiches it's inspirations so closely that it just makes me want to watch the originals more. also, I'm not a huge fan of uma Thurman.

"Quentin Tarantino is a GENIUS!" they said. "He scored a SAMURAI FIGHT with FLAMENCO MUSIC! No one in the history of cinema has done anything so creative!" And there I was, at eighteen years old, feeling alone against the world as I asked, "Is that really creative, or is that just mashing two different things together because you're desperate to look cool?"

I'm actually kind of sour about Kill Bill's popularity, because I think it's immediate predecessor, Jackie Brown, demonstrated how good Tarantino could be when he was a little restrained. But that one didn't do well and Kill Bill was a smash hit, so Hollywood pretty much committed to indulging all of his base impulses from that point forward.

I got to rewatch these movies recently with a friend who had never seen them, and we both enjoyed Vol I more than Vol II because of the pacing. Also for me, when I saw Vol II the first time, I rooted for Beatrix and cheered her victory, but this time, I found it really gutting that she kills the father of her child, who for better or worse had been the central character in BeBe's life, then the film treats it like it's no big deal. Having that at the end of the saga sours the whole experience for me, sadly.

Am with Clint here - didn't hate the Kill Bills, but didn't love them. Never was a martial arts film fan, and the blood here was too over the top to be affecting.

Well, the blood spray is supposed to be ludicrous, I think, and also an homage to samurai bloodbaths like Lone wolf and Cub and, well, Lady Snowblood. I also didn't love it, in part because I got a lot of the references. It started to feel more like a collage than a film.

You're not alone Clint! You're not alone! I love Quintin and his movies, but I just don't care for, nor have I fully watched KB 1 & 2. Fell asleep during inglorious bastards.

Kill Bill (it's one movie, stop calling it I & II, even Tarantino considers it to be one movie) is the Weakest, the most Overrated Tarantino's movie and it DOESN'T deserve a spot in top 300, let alone top 100! CineFix discussion was fun and good though, as always 🙂

this movie really does not deserve this much talk. it is just a mindless mediocre action movie.

This movie IS good, but it's very far from QT's best. It would certainly not make my top 100. PS: This is not a top 5 Tarantino movie lol...

I love Kill Bill. As a fan of old martial arts movie, this takes so many of the various genres cliches and tropes and makes it one cohesive package that is leagues above the movies it took expiration from in terms of polish and production. Also, Clint saying the movie is obnoxious and saying he didn’t like the movie because he doesn’t like Tarantino is obnoxious. Kill Bill is my second favorite Tarantino movie this side of Pulp Fiction and it’s a perfect action film that does so much but somehow feels perfect in pace and execution.

I've recently discovered this podcast and it's been great so far. This one not so much, especially the amount of shitheaping. If you don't like it you don't have to grasp each opportunity to make that clear. Yes, the title card is obnoxious but so is the whole movie. I'm glad that in the end it was a bit more nuanced, but the first part felt like hating for the sake of it. I listen to these podcasts to hear new stuff and learn about a film, not to hear someone repeatedly make the same point why they dislike the director's choices. But like I said, this is an outlier, the previous ones were really fun to listen to! And 2/3 of this one was too, so overall it was still worth listening to until the end.

Given Kill Bill has risen in the ranks to become my favorite movie (I consider v1 and v2 as one movie), I do not appreciate this slander. All the negatives mentioned are all the things I think make it unique and special. I get it though, I'm not the hugest fan of Christopher Nolan but I know plenty of people who love Interstellar where I find it to be just OK so I get it.

I'm so glad Clint was here to say this because I totally agree. Tarantino is brilliant, but so many little things about him and his choices rub me the wrong way. I'll still enjoy his films, but they never make it on any of my lists.

Bleeping the curses is so stupid btw you've missed a ton in this episode. Just stop it, we're not children and this isn't TV. Also I cannot get behind Clint's opinions here at all. Hate Tarantino all that you like but attack the film for the film, not the person behind it

It has some great elements and I respect the idea, but it is just a bit too silly. The insistance on showing uma thurman's feet is weird too.
