Yeah exactly right, I mean I grew up in the meta era and even as a kid, I didn't respect sonic's character in colors( which was my first sonic game), even a lot and I do mean a LOT of other kids I met who also grew up on the meta era hated his character and still does to this day, and I only played the games like sonic 1,2,3 and k, CD , adventure 1,2, the advance trilogy, the rush games, secret rings, black knight and unleashed about 2 years ago after the disappointment of forces and I respected his character in those games than the games I grew up on. If your supposed target audience ("kids") doesn't even like or even respect the characters, than that argument about "sonic being for kids" isn't even doing that right.

And even they think Sonic's too babyish and juvenile/boring (these days). Sonic is now Sega's 4th current best selling franchise, 4th. Their real bread and butter these days are the Yakuza series and the RPGs coming out of Atlus and those are made with a Japanese audience in mind as opposed to Sonic who was designed for a western audience and is a niche in a niche in Japan. Given the historical tensions between Sega of Japan and Sega of America (maybe even Sega of Europe someone will have to get back to me on that) I get the feeling Sonic is a bit of afterthought to the home office these days, one that perhaps some in the company are questioning if they even need anymore since the franchise made mostly for the home market are doing well overseas. I'm afraid the 30th anniversery games might end up being a last hurrah for official Sonic Games and the fans will have to carry him afterward.

You've said that Forces is suppose to be the "main seller", but SEGA sure as hell didn't treat it as such. SEGA treated Classic Sonic and Mania as more important, and it dominated the franchise in 2016-2018 and receive the most attention. They made sure to give Mania the utmost care possible, the best marketing and advertising, DLC with an physical release, it's own animated mini-series, delayed the game to further improve the quality, and most of all they treated the game with RESPECT. Meanwhile they mistreated Sonic Forces, the game that is suppose to be the next big title in 2017 like it's an afterthought and it didn't receive the same treatment. It's like they didn't have much confidence in the 3D game to begin with, and if the game fails then they have Sonic Mania to save them. That is why I'm hoping that the next anniversary year isn't Classic Sonic heavy, or better yet I hope that C.Sonic doesn't return next year so that way they can focus all their time and attention on making a good 3D game instead of using Classic Sonic as a crutch.

How good the game will be will matter infinitely more than whether it has classic sonic in it or not. Granted if they WANT to make a good game (and are able to) then its in their best interest to not include him so the game can be more focused, but seeing that Gens exists and it has Classic Sonic in it, its more of a superficial complaint at the end of the day... The quality is what's going to determine if the next game is taken well...

It's bad enough that some people actually think that a Sonic game will be good if C.Sonic stars in it. You know, if you said back in 2017 that Mania was just "a side game" then I would have disagreed strongly, tho admitedly I like the 2D sonic games a lot, even more than the 3D games (infact I'd still argue that its not a side game). But given the lack of news since then, and the fact that the original Mania team seems to have split off entirely and Stealth came out saying that they didn't even get paid all that much...it doesn't even matter at this point, Sega are treating it like a side game despite them wanting you to think its not! TL;DR We're stuck with Sonic Team, with no indication that the next game will be any better than Forces... What a time to be alive...

The ending you did there with the interview was a nice touch. For some reason made me feel like it was the end of an era for the sonic franchise. Sega had eventually stopped careing deeply about the characters and the story's they told with them and I guess along with that their attention to the franchise faded away as well and now sega's coasting of the reputation of sonic with all this side stuff until the series comes to a abrupt end. The thing is certain fans have lowered their standards with sonic. So as long as his reputation hasn’t been jeopardised again, then it’s a good year to them. That’s why there’s so many fans that start defending sonic when people attack sonics credibility in a year that hasn’t done too much damage to him. As long as sonics name is out there and not in a negative outlook fans will settle for that and claim he’s in a good place that’s why you see them reaching for comics or merch which shouldnt be the primary factor for a platforming mascot but it is because sonic team would rather settle for mediocrity than to achieve through creativity in their games. The movie is the only thing that sonic had going for it this year besides that it’s been a nonexistent year for sonic. If you don’t maintain your foundation which is the fans interest for the main series, it will crumble over time and people will start to lose interest and will no longer be invested because there is nothing to cling onto, besides the memories of when sonic was actually pushing out games with effort and ambition in them.

What I’m hoping for is a good mainstream game and maybe some remasters. I’m sure Sega has realized that remaster collections are doing great right now, with 3D all stars and N’sane trilogy, and we’ve been asking for an Adventure remaster for so long, that the 30th anniversary is the perfect to release it. However, they can’t just win back the fans with recycling, so I hope that a new 3D mainline is in the works, and that they HAVEN’T been working on a new engine for the entire drought and just focused on the game.

N'Sane trilogy is an actual remake. Even the collision detection is different. 3D All Stars on the other hand is barely a remaster (remasters and remakes are different) and feel more like emulated ports with only a mall handful of improvements. Sonic Adventure already got a remaster in the form of DX. As for an actual remake, the fanbase will fin ANYTHING to complain about; including not bringing back the old actors for Tails, Eggman, Gamma, Pachacamac, and the president for reasons beyond Sega's control. Or the remake either bring too different or too samey compare to the original version. On another note, I would prefer that Sega trashes the Hedgehog 2 engine and either brings back the Hedgehog 1 engine or find a new engine to work with, Hedgehog 2 engine so far ha produced the ugly looking Sonic Forces.

Honestly. Sonic is a game series. We've been shown by Forces that Sonic Team can't even meet the standards for a good video game anymore, one that had every right to be something good to follow off Mania's momentum. I love the movie, and the comics. I can at least say that Sonic Forces is doing some interesting things, but at the end of the day, this doesn't help the game series itself when all we have to look at for a 'proper' Sonic games is Forces.

Honestly, Archie Sonic was better than IDW Sonic. Especially since Archie Sonic was allowed to have its own lore and a universe separate form the games. Archie Sonic was unrightfully killed off just because it wasn't mandated enough for Sega's taste. Heck, even Fleetway Sonic had an interesting take on what is primarily a game series. IDW Sonic feels so bland and lifeless in comparison to both of those comic series no thanks to the ludicrous amount of mandates.

Sega need to learn from their mistakes and make sure they don't happen again. Also it's time for longer mainstream modern Sonic games, they need to last for at least 10-12 hours. That way we can enjoy it for longer and get more out of it

Ok, so I don't really tend to dive deep into the Sonic twitter but I haven't seen alot of the 2020 Defense Squad you mentioned. Honestly, I have mostly seen these 4 things in the fandom so far: - People being cautious towards the next 3D Sonic or having little to no hope for it. -Making jokes about nostolgia, linear levels and bad story being in the next game - People taking big dumps on the "Modern" era while praising the "Dark Age" era highly. - People appreciating fan art or scenes from the comics From what i seen, the fandom is in a pretty depressing/frustrated mood right now. The Defense Squad seems like a minority to me. But again, I don't dive too deep into Sonic Twitter, so I probably avoided a chunk of the defenses.

I sit here in 2020, depressed that Sonic and Pokemon went from being my two favorite major game franchises of all time to two of my LEAST favorite major game franchises of all time. Other than Mania being phenomenal, I've been disappointed with Sonic since Lost World 7 years ago, and have hated Sonic since Forces' release 3 years ago... ... At least I still have Mario. Odyssey was brilliant, and despite 3D All-Stars being a middling port job it's still fantastic to re-experience Mario's three genre-defining 3D milestones all on the Nintendo Switch.

Yes, Sonic has had a great year if we're talking about SAGE 2020. The movie only was a financial success because the fans wanted a Sonic movie forever, but the movie wasn't really original and didn't show Sonic as cool like they should've. Jim Carry and Tails were the stars and Sonic was too much in his feelings and cringey for the most part. When Sonic comes back, he needs to snatch back the cool and rebellious attitude he was created for. If SEGA brings great action, attitude, story, speed, environments, spaces, characters and adventure, than they should find themselves a stronger fan base, a happier one, higher respect, and themselves happy as well.😳

Honestly, I doubt Sonic will be like he was in the 90s ever again. I feel they need to find a balance between his adventure loving self from...well...the Adventure and Heroes games, his seriousness from the 4kids era games, and his love for jokes in the 2010 games (though someone other than Pontac and Graf need to be in charge of the jokes). While some of Sega's writers did it better than others, I feel like after Sonic left the 90s that none of them truly nailed down the correct Sonic. On another note, I am not a fan of Jim Carrey's Eggman design. He looks more like a bad impersonation of the doctor.

It’s hard to stay optimistic about this series anymore. I’ve kept my expectations low since forces. They did the impossible. They literally proved that they can take all the time in the world, and still produce garbage. (Forces) I’ve been trying to stay optimistic for 9 years now, since Generations, but it took two years for lost world, and that was eh. After that, we got the hot garbage that was Rise of Lyric. After THAT, we had to wait 3 years, THREE YEARS, for another Sonic game, and we got Mania. Don’t get me wrong, Mania is a good game, but I’m tired of this series having to rely on nostalgia to even stay relevant. Before Mania, we had just got lost world, which had A LOT of classic elements in it, Generations, and Sonic 4 episode 1 & 2. Generations already fulfilled the purpose that Mania tried to. Then after Mania, we got Forces........ the game that took 4 years to make, and we got nothing in between that. Not even any spin offs or anything. I lost all hope and optimism after Forces, as it burned me so hard. It’s been 3 years since Forces, and all we got was the Sonic movie, which didn’t even feel like a Sonic movie. That’s not Sonic, or at least not how he should be. It just feels like that typical cash grab kids movie with a cartoon character in the real world, except it was actually decent. But, besides the movie, (which again, I don’t even consider a Sonic the Hedgehog movie) we got nothing, and we still have zero news. Honestly, if they mess up again for the 30th anniversary, I’m done with this series. Even if we get an amazing game like Mania 2, Im still gone, as I’m so annoyed with this series having to survive off of nostalgia. Also, on top of all these things, Sonic just isn’t Sonic. And he hasn’t been since I’m pretty sure Heroes. He’s supposed to be a cool, cocky, and rebellious teen but is still a hero, doesn’t take everything like a joke, and can still get emotional. SA2’s intro perfectly captures Sonic’s personality and attitude. Actually, just SA2 as a whole, makes Sonic as he should be. I miss that Sonic. But now we have somebody who sounds like a 30-40 year old man that try’s to be “cool” and “hip” with the teens cracking stupid jokes. Now, the series is directly targeted to 8 year old kids who laugh for 3 hours after hearing the word “fart”. My problem with Sonic is that Sega is trying to force him to be something he isn't, he grew along with his fanbase, no one gives a fuck about power of friendship anymore, instead of making a great game with a 1-and-done story with sequal potential, they're just pumping out shit games trying to force sequels like they did in forces (no pun intended) Sega thinks it's funny to have people who haven't absorbed a piece of sonic content to be writing the GAMES, I swear if we had the IDW writers put on the games we'd never have a bad Sonic game (narrative) again, niggas just wanna go fast through gorgeous worlds, Sega needs to stop making Sonic compete against Mario and just let Sonic be SONIC, then again Sega doesn't even know what Sonic is now that 3 different versions of him are Canon

@@EpicGamer-69 Actually, they're right, the CS from Forces is from another dimension, the events of Generations split the timeline, as it happened before Sonic 3 and Knuckles in Classic's perspective, so after Classic returned to his own time, it wouldn't make sense that he returned in Forces because he grew up to become Adventure Sonic, here's where the timeline split comes into play, a new dimension was created, and that's where Mania was born and took place, then THAT Classic Sonic went to Forces, if you try to use that one scene of interaction between Modern and Classic "it's been generations since i've seen you" it was just to be fancy, Mania Classic Sonic actually does not know Modern Sonic even if Modern recognizes him as the OTHER Classic Sonic.

I also agree on having classic sonic on the anniversary known as generations. I believe it was the 25th anniversary? Correct me if I’m wrong but I didn’t really hate classic sonic in generations. He was in the middle not too bad not too good just ok. What I hate about generations is that they butchered my favorite era which was the modern I loved colors and unleashed but man. But all that aside I think if This anniversary fails it’s over. What can they do? I think sonic has a slim chance of coming back.

Yes Sonic is having a great 2020, in fan games that is.😢😢😢 It's sad that SAGE and SHC is the only means of new Sonic Content since this drought. Other then Sonic Mania, Sonic Generation was the last good Sonic game we had. I remember saving up enough money to buy that game too, those were the days. I truly miss the Blue Blur and I hope he makes a come back. Sonic Adventure was my first game when I was a kid and I have adored most aspects of the franchise from the Classic era, the Adventure era, and the Boost era. But now I'm just deprived of the very franchise I hold dear to my heart. I wish there was something I can do to revive my favorite childhood games. It's really not that hard too fix the series, but I probably over think on ideas to bring the series back to relevancy. But I guess they really don't care about the series anymore. I truly believe us fans are the only thing keeping the franchise alive.

I totally agree sonic fans try to think happy saying they will get the game just give them time but you really have to think deeper and think about his long-term if this game flops for sonics 30th anniversary sonics pretty much is gonna be one of the famous failed franchise because his games were bad and didnt do much sales except for his movie. If sega wants to succed they need to pull of big they need to make at least 2 side games not mania style again but not bad something like what they did with black knight and secret rings do a remake of those or 2 new side titles and the main game they need to have a bigger team. The movie was great,but so far sonic hasn't had good years ever since forces came out, expect mania was great,but what if they remade forces better,new story,better graphics,harder bosses and stages,fix stages,no classic sonic,maybe tails back to normal,silver as a playble character,fix everyones emotions,and leave a cliff hanger for infinite and eggman,and there wasn't a chaos or clone shadow boss,what you think people you want remakes?
