I completely agree. In fact I think I may have seeded the thought in your head Paul 😂 Anyway, the thing that really stands out to me is that high level 40K doesn’t look anything like two armies fighting a war. You have units standing in corners not doing anything. You have tanks sitting around “cleansing” objectives. You have units strung out in absurd t-bone formation to benefit from an aura. And of course every battle is fought over the exact same combination of L-shaped ruins which for some reason have enough strategic importance that the most important faction leaders and primarchs turn up every time to personally defend them. 40K is basically a worker placement game. It’s a good one but it’s definitely been abstracted away from a war game too much.

Yeah tbh I think you articulated it best to me. Worker placement simulator hahahaha Thanks for watching pal

Great insights. The problem is also some rules are not actually what ppl think they are. First example turn 1 deepstrikes...

Fantastic video Paul, you should do more of these, I love how there's no jump cuts or anything, it's just you talking for 15-20 mins great stuff I agree with alot of this.

The endless mission draw mechanic is very similar to skyrim and other videogames. Go to the dungeon, collect 10 items, come back and get given another go fetch objective.

love the video, you rite grey knights where unique now every army is getting something like it. 3'' deep strike seems to repeat alot. rules should be lore based.

Tyranids and cp reduction/audition and making opponent strats more expensive. (Hive Tyrants). They have good resources too. Spread, missions , lots of units… etc…

Great video. Great points. I’ve been playing 40k on and off since 1994 … they do this every edition. Pick the rules/edition you prefer and don’t switch editions just because corporate pushes it.
@epic_flail2 ай бұрын
Thanks pal, appreciate the kind words a lot and fair point. Challenge I find is maintaining a play group or people who want to do that as new stuff is always tempting!! Having said that, I know people who still play old editions or just house rule loads of stuff for bit of fun

Thats pretty much exactly how I have described it. A mix of that and E-sports with all the patches and tournamets And tye discussions online aboit what meta, and how anything below 47% winrate is "LITERALY UNPLAYABLE!" The mechanics makes It a realy good game. Bit also so clearly a game. In 40K I move this piece over here so it gets a reroll to hit, and then I activate THIS thing for "all 6s to hit = a wound" etc. In Warhammer the Old World O cleverly move my cavalry up the flank to threaten, mean while slowly advanceing my steadfast infantry. Its just... 40Ks lore is fantasic. But I dont feel it whole gameing

A hex based system would be so much better for a tighter rule set. The sloppy play is frustrating.

Sloppy play is frustrating. Grid system would absolutely move it into the board game category - which is why I think tape measures will always persist

As more of a board game lover it's interesting to hear this thought. I dare say that board games are too broad a category to actually compare against 40k - though I obviously get the comparison you're making. Board games can be more/less strategic, more/less tactical, more/less random etc. etc. depending on the game. There's some board games that are the opposite of what you currently dislike about 40k. But as far as 40k is concerned it definitely sounds like there's a lot going on. I'd love to hear a comparison to Magic - a game that has 100's of keywords, but doesn't feel as rules heavy. Also balances the competitive & casual a lot better.
@wojciechprzewozniak5972 ай бұрын
Regarding screening and deepstrikes. Its an obvious rule bloat when you can deep strike but then you cant deepstrike bc of screens. The rules contradicting each other was a nightmare of 9th ed. Because you need to remember 2 rules just to remember that neither of them are working and you eill be better off just getting a bigger horde without any rules that will cancel each other...

I loath board games as they are too complex and reward the rules nerds. I want a wargame where the key decisions are which units to field and how to use their strengths on the battlefield to achieve victory. This game is far too complex. I’m a new player and I haven’t even bothered playing mission cards yet and it boggles my brain. I’ve had more fun playing One Page Rules if I’m honest.

As soon as you consider models as screens instead of armoured vehicles or terrain, its no longer a war game (imo) Old World is the only war game that GW sell
@epic_flail2 ай бұрын
Old World definitely feels like a battle unlike 40k the screening game
