I'm 31, my boyfriend is 15 years older than me. We both love history but I admitted I was ignorant on Isreal/Palestine and asked him to explain. I was literally asking the exact same questions as Nick was as Hassan was explaining everything. In school, they didn't even touch base on the conflict since by the time any grades got close to discussing these topics, it was so close to the end of the year that everyone was tapped out, or there wasn't a whole lot of information in the textbooks since it was considered more current events than solid history. I literally didn't know ANYTHING about Isreal, I didn't even know that it didn't exist until after WW2. In fact, I was very supportive of Isreal for awhile because, of course, they should be given land to live on because they were displaced during the holocaust, but it's so obvious Isreal is just doing what settlers did to native Americans, saying Palestinians are not human, barbaric, they have no claim to the land, and literally stealing their homes. Many people don't even realize it because we have such an ingrained apologetic and empathetic response to the genocide of the holocaust, that many Americans can't stomach the fact Isreal is doing the exact same shit, or even colonists and settlers did. History truly repeats itself. Maybe in 100 years, once Isreal no longer sees Palestinians as a physical threat, they'll finally back off, give crocodile tears, and go "we're so sowwy 😢 we didn't realize what we were doing". I wanna hope that things will change but the way things are going it sounds like it's only going to get worse.
