I don't know when you went to school but to add up my school books and notebooks (when I went to school) could weigh somewhere between 10-15 lbs. As part of my IEP I got a second set of books because it started getting too difficult to carry. Still without the books it weighed at least 5 lbs.

The spinal cord can take the stress specifically better where the muscles in your back are, not where you have almost no muscle as a young child at the front of your body.
