Know that your skepticism of Western culture is greatly influenced by the perspective you see in Western media or maybe from your education, I dont know what you are taught. The majority of people, if not interested, dont feel any kind of resentment towards your way of life. It seems to me that often when someone is interested and asks questions or makes observations, jews generally are quick to take a more defensive approach. I dont know if this is a part of jewish culture, but that is the only lets say incomprehensible thing about jews from a non-religious Western person’s point of view.

Thank you for making these videos. A couple of clarifications: what the guy at the end was saying about DNA testing and "matches," that's not what he meant. They're testing for carriers of certain genetic diseases that developed among some European Jewish groups because they lived in segregated communities for centuries. They want to make sure that both members of a couple aren't carrying mutations that might result in children who have these illnesses (for example, one is called Tay-Sachs disease). Another point: when the guy was describing the rules around married couples, he talked about women being impure if they're menstruating. The word "impure" means *ritually* impure, not impure like they're dirty. Also, men are also considered ritually impure if they have a seminal emission. They also have to do certain rituals to remove ritual impurity (according to their belief). I don't know why he said that women who go to the monthly mikveh (it's not a "spa," but some mikvehs are very nicely appointed) spend an hour soaking before they do the ritual bath. Untrue. A woman takes a shower, washes very well to remove any possible barrier between herself and the water in the ritual bath. Then she goes to the small ritual pool, just one at a time with a female attendant, and does the ritual (people get a towel to wrap themselves in). It's all very respectful and private. I tried it years ago, and it's like women's ritual magic, it's actually very special.

Beautiful series, very well done!! I’m from the Hasidic community in Williamsburg and I have to say, you did an amazing job capturing the atmosphere and spirit from our town in a positive way. I’d like to add just one more detail that I think might prove interesting for those interested in these subjects, here goes: Hasidic Judaism was founded by the bal Shem tov (Rabbi Israel ben Eliezer) a little more than 200 years ago, with no more than a few followers , where it ultimately became the empire It is today. It’s fundamental teaching (and the thing they appealed to most of it’s adherents) was that Judaism is for everyone, not just for the academics and very spiritually invested. Whereas till then you were only considered a “true jew” if you fell in any of the above categories, the bal shem tov thought his people that being a true Jew means incorporating god in whatever it is you do, no matter how lowly or insignificant the deed may seem. (This naturally caused a very long winding and heated conflict between the “Hasiddim” and “misnagdim” (which literally translates to “the opposers”, people who rejected Hassidus on account of it being a new form of Judaism,and not going in according to previous traditions.), but that’s a topic innate of itself. The teaching of hassidus is heavily based on “Kabbalah”, a study that was first introduced to Judaism with the discovery of the zohar, which legend had it was written by Rabbi shimon bar yochai, (a sage who lived in the era of the “ta’naaim”) who’s said to have received all his knowledge from god himself when he was hidden in a cave for 13 years hiding from the Roman Empire. (Many of Jewish greats and scholars rejected this claim, and instead insisted that the zohar was written by “moses de Leon”, a poor teacher (and Kabbalah student) who lived in the 14’th century and tried (successfully so) to make a living by going around and selling these books, a claim which is universally accepted by almost all modern scholars and academics. However it should be, there are still to this day many many sects of communities that live based off these teachings (as evidenced by this mini series ), but there is another “version” or approach to Judaism, which is what I wanted get to this whole time (sorry, I tend to get carried away 🙈), and that’s the rationalist approach. Channeled first by rabbi saadia gaon, and later on adopted by greats such as Maimonides (in his book ‘guide for the perplexed’) and Gersonides(‘War of the lord’), this approach aims to explain Judaism within the framework of Greek philosophy (and in today’s days; science). Whereas “Kabbalah” Judaism ( or mystical Judaism) will tend to explain Judaism and the world with “unnatural” concepts such as “the supernatural”, astrology, demons etc..., rationalist Judaism rejects all this, and aims to explain Judaism through the pure rationale of the human mind, within the framework of Judaism and science. The latter approach was ( and is still ) rejected by many in the Jewish world, for many different reasons, (another very complicated and highly controversial topic), yet somehow managed to survive and is in some communities (although not many) the structure and way of life, raising their generations in accordance to the above. My point with all this is, that if you’re someone watching, and think that “although this community’s way of life is very nice, But I still don’t understand the logic behind all this”, just know that their are other explanations out there for all the different things we do, as well as very Well thought out rationales for general concepts such as god, after life, etc.. and maybe you’ll find what you’re looking for “over there”. I apologize for this very long read, but I just had to get this out my system 😁. Thanks again for such a wonderful series, and for those of you who made it all the way to the finish, congrats! 🏆😀

The problem is that orthodox Jewish women have 10-15 kids, no matter if they want it or not. That is just too hard to handle!
@rodgrodg4hk2693 жыл бұрын
@@Nigrol750 This isn't exactly true. Yes, there are families that have over 10, but even in the hassidic world, the average is around 7. Now I'm not hassidic, so I can only speak for the orthodox world. There, women aren't forced to have any large # of kids. The biblical command is only to have 1 boy and 1 girl, so the rules are ore strict until that point is reached. But every child after that is still a huge mitzva, so having big families is definitely encouraged. In many cases, the woman wants to have a big family as well (sometimes even more so than the husband). There are also exceptions made for women who can't handle at the time for physical/emotional reasons.

I think many woman don't want to engage during their monthly, but that doesn't mean they don't still want or need affection from their spouse. I made many friends working on Broadway, when I was drafted these friends gave me a going away party. The outpouring of concern and love was overwhelming, it was very moving and emotional for a 20 year old draftee during Vietnam. During my time in he Army this group of people sent me care packages, which were very welcome. Of course it was packed with NYC stuff, Yahoo,Motza,Lindser Tarts and tons of other goodies. The part that I like to share, most of these people who sent me care packages and goodies were Jewish! When people asked me about my packages, I told them the packages were from my Jewish Family in show business!

I am blown away by this series. I believe this is one of the very best things I have seen on the internet ever. Thank you for such an interesting and informative look into this culture. I'm always curious and intrigued by different cultures, and love getting insight and learning more about them. I wish we all had that sense of community and faith.

♥ So, so beautiful, Peter ♥ Thank you for sharing this with all of us and for all the Hasidic families who opened their hearts and homes, it was such a moving, loving experience to visit. I have only ever watched a Sabbath prayer in a movie (Fiddler On The Roof) years ago and I distinctly recall how incredibly beautiful the sound of it was that it brought tears to my eyes. And now, after watching this three part series, I have an deeper affection and appreciation for our Hasidic brothers. I learned SO MUCH from these episodes -- really it made me fall in love with the Hasidic community. ♥

Brought tears to my eyes when the guy talked about his wife being like a new bride that you just married every month when they come back together after an abstinent period. What a beautiful thing. There's so much Beauty in relationships that is missed out on in the rushed and selfish way that they are conducted in modern culture. I'm a little jealous of this man's wife.

@@ag4444 She is considered ritually impure, meaning for having sex. She is not dirty. This is a misinterpretation. But you are welcome to think what you want. Being Hassidic, his first language is Hebrew or yiddish, this is how he expresses that part of his world. It is not a "world view" meaning that all women are disgusting. It's just a subtlety in language that gets lost due to cultural and language differences.

Thank you for such an amazing insight with these 3 videos. When I watched “Unorthodox” i felt it wasn’t a true depiction of the Hasidic Community. It was definitely biased for secular watch ability. I am a reform Jew, was raised up in that community. My dad (1920-2015) was raised Orthodox in Brooklyn. When he moved to the West Coast in the early 40’s he felt the sting of anti-semitism, he started a business and changed the family name from Steinberg to Stevens. (A decision he regretted in later years). Since I grew up Reform, I was not educated as much in Hasidim, so my curious nature totally enjoyed this series. Thank you so much for answering many of my questions, some which I didn’t even know I had! The most wonderful thing I took from this series is the meaning of JOY! My mom and dad were always laughing, and showing the good in everything. I have embraced this way of life, I’m all about Peace, Love and Joy. Its my sincere hearts desire that we all can get along, and treasure each of our different religions, without judgment on each other. This series can go a long way to show this kindness. Thank you, thank you!! ✡️
