I picked up the 38V first and was shocked how much it changed how the system felt compared to the 45P and 80 1.9, mainly due to the autofocus speed, surefootedness and sound. It actually feels like a camera system made this century. Getting the 55V wasn't something I planned on, but I liked the 38 so much that I snagged a 55 when they got restocked at B&H.

Those lens are a design delight. The little H logos that also add grip texture. The focus clutch with hyperfocal distance markers. Truly commendable what those Swedes are doing here.

1:42 Bravo Benj! For those of us who shot true medium format for years, this truly is APS-M. Great to see the flying V logo, paying homage to Victor. Before the 645 H System was invented, their cameras were simply known as the 500 Series.

I love the 55V. Just received the 38V today. Will order the 90V once they become available. The 55V lenses complement the X system in a way the previous XCD lenses just didn't. I also have the 907X 50C and the design cues throughout the system are seamless. It's a joy to use.

Great review! I bought the 38 as my first lens for the 907X CFV100C and I’ve been blown away by the images from that combo. Just amazing. I’ve been impatiently waiting for the 90 which seems impossible to obtain….. so, just bought the 55. Can’t wait!!! Your review was very helpful.

I own the X2D and my workaround has been to use H series lenses I used with my H1 body. I have the HC 35mm, 80mm, 100mm, 50-110mm adapted with the XH CONVERTER 0,8. They still work brilliantly albeit manual focus only, the 100mm followed closely with the 80mm makes the most beautiful portraits with the "creamiest" bokeh I have seen. Not many people use that combo so it doesn't get much exposure on the socials. Best $700 I spent on an adapter for a camera.

@@benjhaisch yeah just be aware that the 100mm AF mechanism fails, which is not a problem considering that you won’t be able to any ways. Focus peaking with the orange color gives the best success rate for me. Also look out for the adapter on BH used. They get a little cumbersome but once you see the results it fantastic. The adapter essentially turns the 100mm into f1.8 and the 80mm into an f2.2 in case you already didn’t know.

I’m using this lens together with its 90mm sibling in the studio for fashion and beauty shoots. Never had an issue with AF. The IQ is insanely good. Gorgeous system. I wasn’t too impressed with the original X1D, but these new cameras and the new lenses are fantastic. When looking at the price, also take into account that every lens comes with a leaf shutter and it syncs up to 1/2000th. I think the 90mm can even sync up to 1/4000th…

I agree with all your points on the XCD 55V. We can hardly think of the X2D as a "walk around " camera but with the XCD 55V it is a walk around camera. It does great detail without being harsh, a miracle. I have portraits that have sharp eyelashes and detailed skin but not harsh skin. It has to be magic. Color, definition and IQ are the best I have seen. Zooming in on a distant pine tree reveals needles as sharp as can be. The camera lens combo is quite expensive and worth it. You hi the high points well. And BTW, those old retro Sonnars cover the X2D sensor, ;o)

The sound you are hearing from the lens is not the Leaf Shutter, it's the Autofocus, I have the 20-35 and it makes this sounds as well, but when I switch to MF it's gone.
@benjhaisch
@benjhaisch Ай бұрын
It’s the shutter… I can even feel it opening and closing in the lens when I take a photo. Your 20-35 might have significantly more glass inside so it’s dampened more, but the sound isn’t the AF at least in my lenses (28/38/55/90)

Love the channel as it’s my go to source for anything Hasselblad! I have the X2D and absolutely love it. I have the 135mm with 1.7 TC and probably will never sell that lens. I just however sold my 45p because I was getting a bit bored with the focal length. I’m considering picking up the 28p… but I also want a mid range too. If I can find a 55v would you go for it OVER the older 65mm 2.8 for that range? I’m guessing the V has much better focusing motors in it and probably a little better in optical performance … hard thing is finding theses new lenses. Ideally I’d LOVE the 28p and 55v but I’d be happy with the 65mm I think as it’s also less $$ on the used market.

@alextsayun
@alextsayun 9 ай бұрын
@@benjhaisch Optically, the 65 is hard to beat. Think of it as being like a 50mm APO Summicron. You can easily use it for all type of work, especially landscape. I am surprised by the MTF curves on paper of the 55V when compared with those of the 65. V lenses are not as sharp as most of the older lenses, the sharpness falloff of the 65mm is much smoother and therefore more pleasing if shoot wide open (the sharpness falloff, off the 55V is somehow rough, noticeable different to the older XCD lenses) Other than that both lenses are great.

I have the 55V on my X2D and it could be your only lens, quite frankly. It really is extremely good. I feel I should have at least one more option but am totally stuck choosing between the 25V and the 90V. At the moment I am erring to the 25V as I really enjoy the X-Pan format and it works very well for that I think. Yet the 90 would be a great lens to isolate landscape elements or people.

Hasselblad's new 55mm f/2.5 to the Zeiss 80mm f/2.8 is not a good comparison. The Zeiss 80mm was made for 6x6 film, giving a 44mm f/1.5 full-frame equivalent look. The new Hasselblad 55mm f/2.5? It gets you a 43mm f/1.9 full-frame look. If you want something closer to the Zeiss 80mm’s look, go with Fuji’s GFX 55mm f/1.7, which gives a 43mm f/1.3 full-frame look. Want to save even more money? Go APS-C. Fuji, Nikon, or Sony paired with a Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 (41mm f/1.8 full-frame equivalent) is closer to the Hasselblad 55mm f/2.5 than you'd think. Here’s the part KZbinrs won’t tell you. For example, you could buy an old Canon DSLR 5DS or 5DR and pair it with the old EF 50mm f/1.2 or EF 85mm f/1.2, crop to 4:3 in post, and blow modern medium-format cameras out of the water. It’s not about chasing the newest gear-it’s about knowing how to compose, crop, and use what you have wisely. Now, about color science-while some people swear by it, it can easily be adjusted in software like Lightroom, Capture One, or Cobalt. Camera companies know this but still hype it up to keep us hooked. Don’t let marketing gimmicks dictate your creativity or drain your wallet. Think critically, shoot smart, and save your hard-earned money. I hope to be the voice of reason for some of y'all falling down the rabbit hole like I have for many years. Happy Holidays to all. 🙏🏽

I finally got my 90mm "V" lens and I like it but quite honestly it was a bit of a disappointment when compared to my 80mm 1.9 ... The overall all image quality and sharpness, Bokeh and color isn't on the same level... it's like a "lower" cost version with a slightly narrower angle... not impressed, I might sell it. I don't think the V line are their best optics.
