A used Hasselblad X1-D body from B&H, plus this lens, for less than a Sony A7-IV and any GM lens. Obviously totally different systems, but this will be so amazing for so many subjects (pretty much anything that doesn't move). I'm optimistic that Hasselblad will continue invested in making the cropped medium format a much more mainstream system going forward with products like this.

The digital image sensor crop factor of the Hasselblad X1D-50c series, Fuji GFX 50S, fujifilm gfx 50r mirrorless cameras is 0.78X. So the Hasselblad 45mm has the angle of view of a 35mm full frame lens (45mm X 0.78). The f/4 isn't something impressive for a prime lens but medium format sensors have shallower depth of field than full frame cameras. I checked a DOF calculator and the total depth of field for the Hasselblad 45mm f/4 on the X1D at 3 meters is 1.91m, similar to a full frame 35mm f/4 lens or a full frame 45mm lens at f/6.7
@ivoboehme4 жыл бұрын
Clever move on the price. I still think Hasselblad missed an opportunity in not adding a additional shutter into the body. This way, they could offer lenses at f2.5 or less without an eye-watering price. F4 / 45 is about f3.2 / 35 in 24x36 terms, looking at depth of field and field of view equivalence. It raises the question what does the x1d give us compared to, say, a Nikon z7 with the f1.8 / 35. Looks, yes. Exclusivity - check. Image quality - I have no idea. I actually may rent one to see for myself.
@thecoment33714 жыл бұрын
Your missing the point here. X1D is about portability and absolute quality, (my) a D850 has a different use, nightscape and sports. X1D have now the ultimate design because in the assumed future when all shutters will be GLOBAL, than a FP shutter is of no use and the register distance of bodys with FP shutters is a waste of space and not as compact as an X1D design. So the X1D design and lenses is already futureprof, but the GFX system will stand there looking stupid in comparison.

This was really useful. I'd been eyeing the X1D since it came out, given how much I enjoy the old 503CW film camera. As soon as this was announced, I pre-ordered it, then I started looking for a used camera body on B&H and KEH. I ended up finding an open-box XCD II, the the combination has become my absolute favorite walking around camera! Super small, super light, fast enough autofocus for things that don't move fast, and the wonderful manual focus makes zone focusing for street shooting just amazing! Thanks for the insights here that got me started with this adventure!

Although that camera has since been "phased out" with the advent of the digital age, I some miss the solid Swedish feel that with the modern Hasselblad cameras that I tend to associate with the venerable 500 series. I practically worshipped the 500 CM ! Just a thought, albeit a digression. Suresh/France

I question whether there will be a place for medium format digital given the quality of images you can now get in FF or APS-C. The tech that lens manufacturers are using today that makes this lens only cost $1k, is changing the paradigm for professionals. Just as bokeh is necessary for portraits, so is foreground to background DOF for wide landscapes. It all depends on what your interest is. For the latter we are shooting at F8-f16 anyway so F4 is unimportant.
@frontstandard14887 ай бұрын
4 years later and stronger still. Medium format will always be niche market or pro use. But the image is not the same as ff. Its not about how many pixels but pixel size, rolloff to oof, tonal spread, colour software etc. In print they look different, approaching more medium format film in some ways.

Hasselblad X1D ii vs Leica SL2, which one do you think is better for street photography?
@key2adventure4 жыл бұрын
I bought X1D with the 45mm 3.5 mostly for nature and travel photography. And now I will have to get the new 45mm f4 because it's both smaller, lighter and sharper. But the problem is, that after this announcement no-one will buy the old one, which is much more expensive - unless I almost give it away. And I will be stuck with two 45mm lenses, of which I will only use one. That is a dilemma I don't like, my money don't grow on threes, and it really was a long term investment when I bought the system, but now that investment doesn't seem so well spent.

Great camera and a beautiful lens but lack of support in Capture One is the thing that prevents me from hitting the BUY button. Thoughts on Phocus vs C1?
@robertboyer59262 жыл бұрын
I have to use both AND Lightroom unfortunately. Phocus for my Hasselblad cameras, Capture One for all my other cameras in personal and client use and Lightroom for teaching workshops that involve post processing or printing. I could use Lightroom for all of them but the fact that I use Phocus being intimately familiar with all of them should say something. As a high volume shooter you'd probably not fall in love with Phocus due to all of the things that it doesn't have that make C1 a machine for going through and dealing with 1000's of images. You may miss a lot of "features" that C1 or L/R have but... there is something about Phocus softwares simplisity and effectiveness of just the basics that makes it very attractive to use as a single shot shooter. It's tethering is great, it's curves control is great along with the other basics. If using the X1Dii or 907/CFV there is some magic about having just the camera, a tiny lens like the 45P (or a 500 and 80 small kit) and ONLY having an iPad or iPhone with you for a weekend or even week long trip with no laptop and no complicated software. Honestly I've had iPads forever but the new Phocus on iPad + my 907 is heaven if you are into pure photography. It's the first time I've actually USED an iPad. I have a very small messenger bag that has a 907x/CFV ii 50c, a 503 w/ A12, an 80/2.8 a few rolls of film, two batteries, and an iPad that is just fantastic for me when doing personal work or even certain client work that is far far smaller and more fun than my Fuji or Canon kit let alone my "real" medium format kit. I love firing of a few frames of digital then firing of a few frames of film in the same session.

Great review. I’m a big fan of the X1dD and made the move from the Leica SL last December. Historically I have always been a 50mm shooter with the M system and also with the SL. In a relatively short time I developed a relationship with the 3.5/45XCD and found it to be a very versatile and incredible lens. I will be excited to try this new lens. What an amazing price point. It almost seems to good to be true. As I am in line for the 907X, that might make for a nice discreet package. Later!

Assuming a crop factor of 0.82x (hard to define as the sensors are different aspect ratios so would depend on the delivery crop) this will deliver similar images to a 37mm at f/3.3 on 35mm
@jamesmonette34254 жыл бұрын
@@TechnikMeister2 to my knowledge its not. the DOF at f4 on a MF wont be equivalent to FF AFAIN
@jasperlai4 жыл бұрын
@James Monette Indeed, the DoF won’t be the same (multiply the F number by the crop factor to work that out), but change in DoF is a secondary effect of changing your aperture-the primary being exposure. The amount of light per unit area captured by the sensor is unaffected by crop factor. f/4 on medium format will produce an image equally exposed as f/4 on FF (keeping ISO and shutter speed the same, of course).

This camera is soo beautiful. Would be difficult to choose between this camera with some old V lenses adapted, or the digital back from the 907x on a 500 series camera. Considering todays cameras like the GFX 100S it gets even more difficult for Hasselblad to sell, but they're on the right track, i guess... Better Autofocus, adding zoom telephoto lenses and maybe better Video at 4k 60p 10bit (for a hybrid beast like an a1 or r5) would bring them a lot of new clients.

@robertboyer59262 жыл бұрын
They are VERY VERY different beasts for very different people and methods. I've been shooting long enough to make anything with any camera but the way you work and how it feels can be very important to some people = me. Different cameras CAUSE me to work differently unless I am forcing it... sort of like work vs play. You will like the Fuji system if you like a lot of features and use them on cameras. You'll like Fuji if what you want is a company that attempts to bridge the gap in frame rates, focus speeds, etc that the rest of the market chases with 35mm sized systems. You will like the Hasselblad system if you want design elegance and as few functions as possible presented in the simplest way possible. If you enjoy working with say a 500 series system for those same reasons you will like the Hasselblad digital system and software. Kind of like the film days the fuji system is more like the Bronica ETRsi vs the Hasselblad 500/V system. Very different for different people. ETRsi or a Contax 645 handles like a 35mm (but looks different). Or say lighting... Godox vs Profoto, all in the U/I and design. Former being kitchen sink thinking latter being simplicity of design.

F3.5 vs f4 charts.... would be curious if anyone could see any IQ differences with both lenses set at F4 and F8.... don’t get me wrong, I think this is a great lens at a greater price.... but not enough difference for anyone already owning the 45mm f3.5.... I would have been much happier if Hassy had developed a 35mm f4p (28mm equivalent) .... it would have likely been even smaller and there would have been an argument for owning both lenses....instead of building a lens at a focal length they already have.
