Thank you! I have twin 15 yo boys who both love this style hat! I had a request by one of them to get him a new one, because he grew out of his last one, but I'm on disability and getting them everything is hard right now! I can sew some, so I am so happy to have found you! I measured his head. It is just at 23.5 ". So I'm hoping the free pattern fits him.

I'm pretty new to sewing, but love to make things and this was my first real project. I was able to use the wonderful pattern and video to make this hat over the weekend! It's pretty special to me; both of my parents are gone now, but I used an old pair of my dad's jeans and some of my mom's fabric for the lining, plus I used her old machine. As a bonus, I stitched a "hidden" pocket into the top lining to store cash or credit cards. Thank you!

@@madcaphatsso I had to get my sewing machine fixed & I am to the part where you sew the visor on and I get match the center front,but is there some specific place on the side where you are supposed to get to or just let it end where it ends. I also couldn’t see in the video how you handle the end of the visor. If you just sew along the edge you will have this little blip where the visor ends or you could sew it into a point with the outer edge which seems like it might be smoother. I really don’t want to do this seam wrong & then pick it out so please advise. Thank you.

Thanks for your lovely comment! I always recommend hand washing for hats and sweat can be removed with dawn dish soap applied to the stain and rubbed in. Rinse and air dry. Some fabrics stand up better over time then others but make him more than one and he will be a very happy flat cap wearing hubby!

@madcaphats2 ай бұрын
@@Oldthumbs Yes wash and steam iron your fabric if the fabric is washable and can be ironed. You sew the edge of the top of the visor to the bottom edge of the top ...the part that would be pulled down by the snap. Do this part by hand working from one side of the visor to the other. I would try my safety pin method first however to see if you like that. Cheers and thank you, Tori

@madcaphats Жыл бұрын
It sounds like your printer is not set to print the pattern at "Actual Size" or Custom 100%. When a pattern is too small it is always the printer or possibly your seam allowance is larger than the pattern requires? Most printers have a fit to page setting. You want to change that. Did you check the measuring line on your pattern? If you did and it is correct then it is your seam allowance. 1000s of people have successfully made this hat! I get their pictures all the time! You can email me at madcaphats@gmail.com and we can go through your printer settings and how to choose Actual size or custom size 109% from your printer menu.

This comment is purely for curiosity's sake, no insult intended. I love this cap style, I've been making them for about a year now and they are all based on a generic flat cap pattern that can be had anywhere. They look just like yours and other makers, but I can sell mine whenever and wherever I please. So many youtubers are creating hats and saying not for commercial use because it's their pattern or creation. My question is: What makes your cap any different than any other flat cap. When compared to other patterns, yours are identical in every way. If the patterns are the same from one maker to the next, how could anyone say I stole their pattern, and I can't sell the hats commercially? Doesn't make sense to me. Unless the hat has been clearly altered to add extra pieces or the shape has changed drastically,, nobody can claim a flat cap or newsboy cap, or any other as theirs. Thanks, love the video and like I said, I mean no offense at all, I'm just curious.
@madcaphats10 ай бұрын
No offense! You will find that hats and caps that stand the test of time are usually the same shape no matter who the maker. Apply that to ball caps, fedoras and of course large brimmed sun hats. I do not restrict use of my patterns and if you are planning to use your skills to make hats for income that is awesome. It is good to understand small nuances that make a hat flattering so I really recommend you experiment to make any changes to any pattern. That is the fun of learning and creativity. I am only here to share my work as I am a trained hat designer and am soon retiring after 37 years! I really can't say what is different about my pattern except for the little extra piece I add above the main visor that in my experience has made the cap better I think!! Happy sewing! Tori

@@is_what_it_is Thank you! Also I will add to my answer if you don't mind ... I have always designed for comfort and fit and in the case of public patterns, the ability to sew at home without expensive equipment like I have in my studio workshop is part of the process at my end right now. Any hats on our KZbin channel have been reworked so that home sewers can make them. Some require more sewing skill than others but little things like giving you a few options to close the visor at the front, replacing the snap with a well placed pin or sewing it down, are part of the pattern and video for this hat. Hope that helps and please come back and check out some of my other hats as I continue to digitize my patterns and release more hat school lessons! Tori

@johnfurr8779 Жыл бұрын
@@madcaphats thanks I appreciate it. I did try one type of peltex in my first caps (I can't recall which) but I didn't like how I could not shape it to retain a curve. I ended up using bills from old ball caps instead. They are harder to trim to the correct shape smoothly though, and my wife doesn't like the look of the untrimmed bills (I do though). I may experiment a bit with wonderflex' fossshape 300 and 600 as well, but I sure whish I knew where to source uncut thermoplastic used for ball caps. That can be easily cut with a laminate trimming router and a hardboard template...

In the beginning of the video it looked like you sewed the band together at the seems. When you went to attach it to the lining top it looked like it wasn’t sewn together? I’m confused

The part of the hat that wrap around the head, the band, has an outside piece and a lining and in both cases there are two pieces that the same but sewn together at the center front. At the 10 minute mark I start to assemble the top and the band together ... they are not your usual hat shapes so I think you may be looking at the back of the cap which will have some darts and getting a bit confused by that. The pinning together starts at a back corner of the top, on the wide curved part of the band and you wrap the piece around joining the center seam of the band with a notch in the center of the top at the front. Hope that helps!!! Tori

The length of the sweat band. How do you determine its length?
@madcaphats5 күн бұрын
If you are making the free pattern, the sweatband is cut on the bias so the fabric will easily fit into place as you are finishing the bottom edge of the cap. I would cut more than the 23.5 head circumference and finish off by overlapping the start and finishing ends once you have it attached. I am going to have to go and check my pattern to give you the measurements that come with the paid package as that piece is part of the bigger pattern in multiple sizes. You can email me at madcaphats@gmail.com to remind me to do that for you! In the middle of show season so I am on the road a bunch right now selling and not making!! Thanks so much for watching! Cheers, Tori

Any advice on a patter or is it even possible. Im looking for a hat like this except where the fabric goes directly over the bill part with no flap part. Id like to have one out of waxed canvas that i can wear in the woodshop. The reason for the absence of the flap is i dont want places dust can accumulate. Any ideas on a pattern or how to modify it?
@madcaphats10 ай бұрын
I would search Etsy for a Flap Cap Pattern that will match what you are looking for. Sorry, I have no designers to offer. I know that is a modern cap you are looking for so maybe add the word modern flap cap in your search. Good luck!

A la gorra se le da forma cosiéndola, pero las piezas de la visera son de una entretela firme o de plástico liviano (puedes usar una botella de refresco de 2 litros para cortar las formas) o un trozo de archivador de plástico.

Can you make these hats on a regular sewing machine ?
@madcaphats Жыл бұрын
Yes of course! IF you have a metal plate over your feeding teeth, really consider getting yourslef a larger size magnet and then you can rest the fabric against it while you stop and start for putting the visor on and the sweatband in. Before I got my larger magnet, the one I use in my videos, I used two smaller ones lined up back to back and that works great too. Any of my patterns will work on a regular sewing machine Elizabeth. I use my industrial because that is what I am used to working on.

Love the pattern - Do you ever interface the main cap pieces or it is just the visor?
@madcaphats Жыл бұрын
You can use a light or medium weight one side fusible on the pieces ... depending on the weight of the body fabric. In the video I made one of the caps from my hubby's old cotton plaid shirt and I use as a medium weight fusible interfacing on the pieces. Check it out at the 1:20 mark in the video!! Thanks for watching! Tori

Okay. Just got it. LOL Think I skipped past that bit - keen to get to the construction details. My impatient self. You’ll be staggered to hear I paid an eye-watering whopping $A250 for a leather version from a New Zealand Hat Co last year for partner’s birthday. Kicking myself now when I see how easy a make they are. (We’re both Kiwi expats living in Australia).

I'm having a problem with the visor matching up with the band. There is about an inch difference, the band being wider. If I sew the visor at the edge of the band, the brim will be under the front of the cap - not sticking out forward from underneath. I only printed large and extra large and I am making the large. I've checked the visor as it is sewn and it matches the size of the stabilizer piece. What can I do at this point?

How many caps can you make in an hour? Do you always make 2 at a time?
@madcaphats Жыл бұрын
Hi Marcy ... I did make two at a time when I was making them to sell. My younger self, who did not pay as much attention to detail, could make several in a day. Now, taking my time and sewing more for joy, I can make three in a day before I am distracted by a walk in the woods, video editing, answering emails etc. I can only produce three of any of my hats in a day now that I am semi retired.

Hi Eudora ... the free version is in the largest print. On this page, scroll down until you see the large print heading for the Flat Cap ... the smaller print underneath would take you to the paid version but the large type, or the heading is the free one. Just run your mouse over the larger heading and it should turn blue for the link. madcaphats.com/pages/summary-sheets-for-youtube-videos-in-pdf-form

We don't sell paper patterns due to the cost of printing and shipping. Digital means you print at home and you can do that over and over! The pattern links are in the description for the video. We have a website and an Etsy shop that sell the digital multi size versions.

On a scale from "this could be your first sewing project" to "don't even attempt this if you aren't a skilled seamstress," how difficult is this?
@madcaphats5 ай бұрын
This is not a good first project. It requires skill especially setting the visor in place so the top sits nicely over the visor. First sewing project definitely the headbands. Then the fleece toque. You will get there!! Cheers, Tori

Some how the measurements are wrong on the side of the cap mine istoo small ?
@madcaphats Жыл бұрын
Check your printer settings. If it is fit to page instead of Actual or Custom 100% then the pattern will print too small. This pattern has been downloaded alot and the only reason for a smaller than expected hat is always at your printer and the settings for page size. Check the settings in your PDF program and make the printer settings from there. You can do a screen shot and email me at madcaphats@gmail.com if you want. I can better advise if I can see what you see!

@madcaphats10 ай бұрын
@sabineritter447210 ай бұрын
