Interesting on the testing. I have an old one in mine and I cleaned the bronze part at the end thinking that would fix issues, as I had some white smoke which was definitely over fueling not coolant loss. Now my mpg seems all over the place I’m just going to replace for a new one. Would have been interesting to see if cleaning your old one would have fixed the issue or the issues are internal. Thanks

Hi again. I used your videos to remove my console and replace heater matrix so thank you. I have a coolant leak that I just can't diagnose. The garage did pressure test and said no visible leaks, Is there a radiator cap that could be faulty, somewhere they may have connected the pressure test? Sorry I'm not that clued up to cars. Replaced the expansion tank andcambelt/water pump. Garage said could be gasket however no signs from oil/smoke/oil cap. I had run some steel series gasket repair through the system as well that I guess may not have worked. Any help appreciated. Mk1 fabia vrs pd130.
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 2 жыл бұрын
Radiators can leak slowly and the coolant evaporates out of sight. Heat can open cracks up and close when cold. It maybe worth testing if it leaks stood cold for a while. Obviously a cracked head or block would be pretty bad, so something to watch out for, as you are doing. Fresh oil may show something up more clearly if there is an issue. Might just be a wait and see.

Thanks Harvey for that great video, very instructive and clear: I was wondering if I could test the operation of the cooling fan by shorting the terminals to the water temperature sensor or is it likely to damage the temperature dial because the resistance is too low?.
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 жыл бұрын
it goes to the control module so no you can't short it. Take it off and the pcm will detect a fault and turn the fans on. you will probably need to clear the fault afterwards. you can also check the thermostat is not open all the time and not getting fully hot. To see if it works, power the fan manually . check the fan relay and connections.

@@HatBoyHarvey Thanks Harvey its great to know, I have tested the Fan direct from the battery and the fan is fine. As you say it could be the thermostat, the needle takes its time to reach the mid way mark and then drops if I go downhill. The thing is when the AC is connected only the small fan spins and I thought they were connected in parallel. thanks again great channel.

Great video, as usual! I have found it, as my Fabia 1.2 AWY from 2003 was not able to pass the emission test(high CO). I went to the garage with very hot motor(temperature indicator was vertical) , and the guy was doing the high RPM test(I don't remember, was the idle already done or not), and after a several unsuccessful test run, the car was starting to beep, and the red thermometer symbol was there. He was not able to test it after. It means I have two problems right now: -1st one is the high emission-value, it seems to be rich. I can read around 0,75-0,85 V from the O2S2 sensor, which is high, but fairly constant. -The second one are the fans at the cooling radiator. I have tried as well, the catalytic converter was red already, and the cooling fluid was in the sky, but they were not running. (Temp indicator was around the bottom of the red sector.). Isn't is possible, that these two thing are related, and the temperature sensor somehow not sending signals to the ECU (only to the Instrument Panel) that the fluid is already warm, therefore it is thinking, that the engine is cold, and the relays will not switch the fans ON, and the engine is getting the richer fuel mixture thank to the auto choke. However, the higher RPM at the cold start(around 950-1000) last only for 1-2 minutes in idle.
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Sorry to hear you are having problems with the car. What did the garage say about the car? The fans can be fixed, check fuses, possibly relay is toast or fans themselves can also fail (voltage tests). Check fuses, OBD2 scan for diagnostics and replace coolant thermostat and temp sensor. Is there water in the oil after changing? Filters changed? Dash lights? 0.85v is rich should fluctuate between 0.1 - 0.9v. test/clean/replace MAP sensor. one thing at once, process of elimination :-)

@@HatBoyHarvey Thanks for the reply! I was the last customer in the garage before the closed, therefore we had not to much time to talk about it, but his main issue was of course not the CO emission(as the can run), but the boiling water, and why the vents are not running. He was mentioned the thermostat, but as the garage is mainly only checking cars (and let them into the traffic-I don't know the English name of it) , he was redirected me to my mechanic(aka me). My wife had problem with that before, in 03/2020, just before the COVID-borderlocks, while she was sitting for an hour in the car in the jam. So I know it was there at that that time already. -I can easily rotate the vents by hand, I was not able to check the electronic yet. Was already darkness, when I tried it yesterday. -OBD scan brings no error, - "febi bilstein 29318 Coolant Temperature Sensor with Gasket and Spring" on its way, I am ordering the coolant thermostat right now. Do you have any suggeston for the coolant thermostat(just as you have the link in the video description) -there is no water in the oil, and no oil in the coolant. -Filters are changed in every year, just as the oil. Btw, there is no oil, or coolant loss at all. -No lights, no error. -The 1st sensor(O2S1) is fluctuating, just as you wrote, but the second one (O2S1) is between 0,75-0,85, as far as I know, it should have a nearly constant value, if the cat. conv. is at its working temperature. But not this high, as you wrote as well. -MAP sensor is on the list Thanks for your tipps!

@@HatBoyHarvey I have tested the fan last week, I have directly connected it to the battery(using the starting cable). The fan was not woring, so I have ordered a new one from SKodaparts. I tried the new beforehead, while the old was already dismantled - old fan is broken. I installed the new one, and tried the car. After warming up, I stopped by the roadside, and kept the motor running on higher RPM. The vent was starting to turn at 94°C, so the switch in the cooler is OK. As it CAN switch, it means, that the termostat is working as well. While I was dealing with the fan, I have ordered a few other sensors, and switched them:the coolant temp sensor(like in this video, thanks again!), and the MAF(or MAP?) as well. This second one got a cleaning previously(using that special spray just as you), but the resistance value was not right(accoring to the grap I have found on the workshop-manuals.com/skoda/fabia-mk1... I have ordered a new switch to the cooler , and a thermostat and a pump as well- If I have to replace any of this, I replace them all. After the fan test, I drove to the ARBÖ garage for a quick emisiion test(not officially, but to know, is it okay I have done). It seems that the emission values are okay, and I will be able to get the permission. Thanks again!

Hello i have a skoda fabia 1.4 68 ps mk 1 2003. I have an issue. My temperature warning flashes at random points. No coolanat leaks or overheating occurs. Also when flashing ambient temperature sensor goes mad or fuel gauge goes to empty level but i have at least 1/2 of the tank. Any ideas what might be? Maybe i should change the sensor or could it be the ecu? Thanks
@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 10 ай бұрын
it could be the level sensor in the expansion tank (common issue) and the fuel sender unit has worn out in the tank OR also sounds like either water or condensation on the connection contacts at the back of the speedo binnacle or the circuit board has some broken solder joints that need re-flowing. Try disconnecting the binnacle, take it out and then spray electrical contact spray on the connections (take neg earth lead off first) let it dry fully and re-connect- if no joy inspect the circuit board. Let us know how you get on :-)

Yes and it would. The ECU takes temperature into account to decide the fuel-air mixture ratio and a bad sensor could result in an over rich ratio leading to black smoke from the exhaust and poor fuel economy.

Can you remember any conditions 6 months ago that could be related? check the seat belt switch under the passenger seat isn't stuck in open position. is your battery correct Ah for car with good 12v+ voltage/charging ok? clock ring on steering wheel, many things can do this. Wiring on older cars can loosen within connections. Does the car leak-in water? Are all systems working correctly in car? Have you changed the brake-light pedal switch? if you can get access to obd2 reader it will help narrow things down a bit.

@HatBoyHarvey

You will have to go through the various systems to find the fault. throttle pedal, throttle body, traction control and of course the cruise control. Are the switches on the cruise stalk stiff/loose? spray with electrical contact to clean with bat disconnected. First look for bad connections by taking off/on, leaks in throttle body/clean MAF/EGR. May have to use OBD2 scanner to indicate issue in the end. Also re-check brake pedal switch fitting/functioning correctly. Hope this helps and you can get it working again :-)

@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey Жыл бұрын
I am not sure if it is down to pour quality replacement expansion tanks or something internal, maybe resistance builds up in the wires with age that gives incorrect readings to the ECU . There are 2 sensors one for temp and the other for level, the first is a variable sensor which you can test out of the car with a volt meter (resistance decreases with heat) and the coolant level switch sensor which is just a switch continuity across the terminals. Obviously you can override this, but I can't recommend it you understand.

Sounds like water circulation has returned and you have warm air again. If this is not what is set on the temp knob then the flapper motor is stuck on hot which often happens on older fabias.

@HatBoyHarvey
@HatBoyHarvey 3 жыл бұрын
There may have been a varience in the water temp as the colder it is the higher the value. I'm not sure if this alone would be a sign the sensor is bad, but the control unit may not like it when the sensor is outside a pre-defined operating range. I don't know if this alone can trigger a warning light or not (possibly) What is important is the change in resistance from cold/hot which my old sensor seamed to struggle with and would indicate a fault. My new sensor hasn't thrown up a light yet, only time will tell.
