The question mark is there because there is a Japanese word "はて” that is alphabetically spelled "hate". When Saiki wrote the lyrics of this song, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you", and she also realized that the English word "hate" can be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて” is generally used in question, she decided to put "?" after "HATE"😁 Maids are always playful!😏 Btw, "はて" can be translated as "What", so "はて?” is like "What?"

Ha - te could also mean "the limits, or less used "Good gracious!" (in a Southeastern US vernacular like "bless your heart") in a literal translation, where Ki - rai is the actual word for "Hate." I love when a band puts on a show and not just plays songs live. It is the essence of the rock-n-roll tradition. 👍

Their stage presence is an important part of what makes them so special to the fans. If you go to a maid cafe in Tokyo, you are greeted as "Master" (or "Princess") and told "Welcome home!" as if you own the place and you are coming back, and they are your staff ready to dote on you. They call their concerts Ok-yu-ji ("serving") and they are there to make sure you have a good time. That attitude is central to everyone in the band. The humor of writing a kiss-off song named "Hate?" and delivered by your "staff" for the purpose of making you smile ... priceless!

Thanks for the reaction and the comments. Band-Maid's live performances are generally better than their studio recordings and/or MV counterparts. They often incorporate call and response segments into their live performances that engage and encourage audience participation. And as you can see, the ladies exude pure energy and joy while performing in front of an audience. Be sure to check out Play!, Moratorium, Domination (official live videos) or Blooming and Shambles (MVs) to start. Cheers!

You won't run out of top-notch Band-Maid songs anytime soon, especially if you're willing to react to songs that don't have a video for them. I like to listen to a playlist of basically everything they've released, and I never get bored. Their catalog is that deep.

It's amazing how Band-Maid has rewritten the laws of nature: Hate brings Love! 😖--->🎀--->😍 Thx, Lee Jaay & Stan!
@TomClark-Futoura7 ай бұрын
And a thing about the maid outfits, Lee Jaay & Stan: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids. Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

They looked and sounded like they just walked onto the stage, but this is No.27 of a 33 song concert. No MV for this but "Domination" MV is popular and "Domination" live is on another level. The later is what people used to suggest as an introduction to BAND MAID as it blew everyone away ... and then this came along haha.

I think they really need to do a live album (but also mic up and mix in the audience as well) and watch become their best album because it would be the only album that could catch them at their best.

Band maid has been doing this a decade and are prolific song writers. They have 130+ songs currently with another full album on the way this year and a new acoustic show this year. You could do a Band Maid track every day and still have months of content. Many reactors have done the multiple versions of the same song in one video when they exist. I highly recommend it. Possible versions are Studio/Music video, Live, Acoustic, and Band Maiko. A good double video to do is “Secret My Lips” and then “Secret Maiko Lips”

I caught this version of HATE? live last August, with the extended duel, at their Minneapolis show. It's every bit as amazing as you imagine.

Yeah I saw its debut the night before their show for Lollapalooza, one of the “Lollapalooza aftershows.” When Dice ended and Akane kept playing, the crowd confusion and energy and nervousness was palpable. Then Hate hits and the crowd erupted. The duel just had everyone going nuts. Easily the highlight of the night.

Hate? is the best "Fuck Off" song I've heard in a long time. The story behind the song is Kanami, their lead guitarist and composer of their songs, told the band members she was in an angry mood when she wrote the music. Saiki, their lead vocalist, decided to write the lyrics for the song (Miku, their rhythm guitarist) is their chief lyricist). Saiki was angry about the husband of a friend who cheated on her during the pandemic. Thus the brutal lyrics. SAIKI TELL US HOW YOU REALLY FEEL!!!!! LOL!!!!! Great song with brutal lyrics and awesome musicianship!!!!!

You asked about reacting to a music video and then the live version and I think that's a great idea. The fans tend to say "LIVE is always better!" but their music videos are carefully crafted and they are very very good too. The music video for "Unleash!!!!!" is particularly good and you'll see dozens of comments looking for the "series" that seems like should follow. Live versions will have "extras" like the bass/guitar exchanges in this one, and they are usually livelier and a bit more raw. Band-Maid strike me as a live band who love playing in front of people.

@artomatt is completely correct. Other songs are awesome but they don't have MV's for them. Even their older songs that they did not write but put their own touches on are seriously awesome. I have my top 10 list of my favorite songs. Actually I have five of them ( top 10s that is). They are truly a miraculous band. As you delve into their story you will see that as well. Most bands from the past that I love dearly have songs that I skipped because they're not so good, that's just not the case with Band Maid. PS: make sure you read @BillHallisey 's comment on the lyrics.

Most Band Maid songs are very relatable. That is because Miku and Saiki write lyrics from the heart. And it helps that they are both great poets as well. But their lyrics mean so much to so many people because basically we are all the same no matter where we are on the planet.

There have been reactors that react to both the studio and live versions of their videos. The fans love that. Not all of their official live videos have official Music videos, but the studio versions are all uploaded on their channel in the "Albums and Singles" section. The members of BAND-MAID once said this during the MC for a concert in Japan. The English word "HATE (phonetic symbols: héit)" is pronounced in the Romanized pronunciation as "hate (phonetic symbols: hǝte, hate)," which means "? =Question mark" in Japanese. So they seem to enjoy pronouncing this song as "Hate (hǝte)?" in the Romanized pronunciation on purpose (tilting their head to the side), not as "HATE (héit)" in English! So, the title of the song, "?" is just a pun that Japanese people can understand. LOL

BAND MAID will not stop you from playing the entire video through to the end. They are very grateful to all the reactions on YT. They would not be as popular - possibly around at all - were it not for the YT response to THRILL their very first song. Please do not stop in the middle or at all during a BAND MAID solo! You loose the momentum. Japanese Interviewer: Since all five girls are cute, each of them has a different character. Those who want to see idols perform can also enjoy (each character individually). MIKU: NO. Not just for one of them, all of them together! Japanese Interviewer: Kuruppo, you are a pretty good tactician. Clever! You thought of it. You really formed the band you wanted, right? MIKU: It's a Miracle! SAIKI: That's right!

My answer for, “Hate?”, is simple. The emotions the lyrics are coming from are so much more than just, “Hate”. Oh no no no. The line, “I don’t care if you die out”, means they don’t even want your family tree to continue. So, hate? Oh hell no. Much more than hate.
