I was at the Monsanto Open when Lee won the tournament on the 4th hole of sudden death, and to see that was something I'll never forget

MR. LEE ELDER IS A CLASS ACT. He stated in this interview that he received threatening letters upon his arrival to Augusta, GA to play in the Masters Tournament in 1975 and he had to stay in two different houses for his own safety. During that time, Paine College opened its doors to Lee Elder and embraced him with a warm reception. Black students were in awe of a Black Man who had been invited to play in the Masters Tournament that was closed for many years to African American golfers. We, at Paine College, are grateful to Lee Elder for being a beacon and a true champion. "Lee, we'll see you real soon at Paine College." Helene Carter

Incredible and sad that his going to the Master's ever resulted in threatening calls. That's just shameful.

golf is such a hard game to begin with., but to be good enough to play as a pro and not be welcomed because of that is really a shame.
