I'm also Nigerian and we connect because we're Christians. Long before HaTikvah was written, us Christians would go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but for Muslim Arabs whose families have been in Israel since the 600s AD, it's hard to connect to a song written from a European Jewish perspective. It would be best to add some stanzas that include them.

@@rjp-sf9hg You're wrong on both counts. A lot of spices make a dish complex in flavor and too little leaves a dish bland. A common criticism of Western non-professional cooks that their food is too bland and the exception to this rule is Italians who use a lot of spices. As for a song, Israel has a Jewish spirit, but it is far more complex than just Jewish. HaTikvah could include a few verses that include it's a Arabs minorities who have been in the land for over a thousand years. Arabs were in Jerusalem long before Ashkenazi Jews were even a thing. Most of the 2000 years that Jews were expelled, non-Jewish Arabs were living in Israel, so it's preposterous they can't even receive some mention and that they just have to deal with it.

This is a very moving anthem, indeed very unlike other anthems of the world that I've listened to. Even though I'm not Jewish, I feel the yearning to visit this land, the land where my faith came from, the homeland of my Lord, though unfortunately it's extremely difficult for me to go there due to restrictions in my country policy regarding Israel. I can get why some people don't feel represented and refuse to sing it, but think about it, every country potential has an anthem that doesn't represent everyone, even for me a Malaysian, Chinese by ethnicity and Christian by faith, don't always feel included like in most anthems, which sometimes can be overly religious, but nevertheless it's not such a big issue for me personally and I feel a sense of pride for my nation. Striking a balance in a multiracial and multireligious country is never easy but people should try to at least look past our differences. That's why sometimes, I don't favour labelling people or even myself by a certain race or ethnicity, it's better to belong to no one but ultimately belonging to everyone.

I think the overall spirit of an anthem is more important than forced inclusiveness. The Star-Spangled Banner speaks of a specific event that no one alive remembers, and yet it is used as the national anthem because it embodies a theme in American history, the military victory at a time when America was an underdog.

India's national anthem is literally a geography lesson. It mentions different provinces mountains and rivers of India. In fact one provinces which it refers is not even in India. (It went to Pakistan after partition.) Infact it is written in a language which is neither spoken by majority of people nor is some kind of ancient religious language. However, our national song Vande Mataram (glory to Motherland) is very much like your national anthem. It is in sanskrit, our holy language. It was part of our anti-colonial struggle. But as not to offend non-hindu population we did not adopt it as our national anthem but rather have to contend with it as a national song. Even today many Muslim Indians refuse to sing it on frivolous grounds such as it is against our religion.

That being said, a couple of them spent a pretty long time in Israel & really grew to love it - I can see why they would want to retain Hatikva. My question is whether there could potentially be some form of compromise - maybe a line or two could be omitted, while another line or two could be added to the anthem?

"east" is like "dawn" - in Albanian dawn = agimi, lindje = east, yet both "agimi i djellit" and "lindja e djellit" means "sunrise," sun=djell. So "east" being the direction of "sunrise" means more than just a geographical east, without the sunrise direction context.

I think maybe just change the stanza about looking to the east if that’s possible but overall Israel is supposed to be the Jewish state so it only makes logical sense that the anthem embodies the Jewish spirit. It’s like England’s national anthem is “God save the queen” (changes to king depending on the monarch) you could argue that it doesn’t do enough to represent the various population groups like Muslims who believe in the idea of a caliphate, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, atheists who don’t believe in God and British citizens who identify stronger with another country but the anthem captures the English spirit but would we argue to change that anthem to be more representative of the various groups of people in the land?

Jerusalem is built as a city bonded as one together. It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD; for Israel’s law it is to praise the name of the LORD. There were set the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David. For the peace of Jerusalem pray, “May they prosper, those who love you.” May peace abide in your walls, and security be in your towers. For the sake of my family and friends, let me say, “Peace upon you.” For the sake of the house of the LORD, our God, I will seek good things for you.

As a descendant of an Anus, I don’t feel entitled to speak to Israel’s acceptance of non-Jews. However, I can absolutely defend the position that non-Jews do not have a claim to the Land. It is the Jewish homeland. Any gentile living in and enjoying the blessings of Israel must be respectful of the nation. If they adopt this attitude, they can fully fall in love with HaTikvah. As for Mizrahim, I do not know how active they were in the Zionist movement. But I do know European Jews fought tooth and nail for the establishment of the State and the liberation of the Land. How many kibbutzim were founded by Mizrahim? How many Mizrahim returned to the land before independence? Those who came later to enjoy the benefits should not shame those who sacrificed so much because of taking pride in their unwavering spirit.

I have listened to more than 10 national anthem and love Israel national anthem most. The melody is great with a little sadness and heartbreaking feeling. Indeed, Jewish history has been quite heartbreaking. Other countries anthems are monotonous. The lyrics are excellent. The only prophetic song, existed before 1948. The Jews were scattered about two thousand years. Note not 500, 1000, 15000, 3000 or any other numbers of years. Jewish Messiah is also my Lord and Saviour, will return to Jerusalem. Messiah will land on East of Zion which is Mount Olive, enter through Eastern Gate. So, looking towards East of Zion is correct. In fact, prophetic. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:27-28)

Their only connection to the land is that they are descended from the ancient Israelites who were the natives of the land/one of the first people to live there The Arabs have a continuous chain of descent for over a thousand years, it's justifiable why there upset. Also, every citizen, no matter what they're born contributes and helps build a society and should be treated. Saying their opinion isn't important because of misnomers is wrong.
