my bf wanted me to leave the room while he was playing Zelda cause he felt uncomfortable with me just sitting there and nitpicking at the game, criticising every little detail. I didn't think much of it until he explained to me that it would ruin his experience with my unnecessary hating. This was my point where I realised "hey I am going out of my way to nitpick on shit that I don't care about, when I could just shut my mouth and not get someone else upset who does care" - now I try to see the better in things and point out (even if less) the points that I do like whenever I'm there. Maybe I was sad I did not have a game I could play by myself, or maybe my neurodivergency

this! like i said, hating is just a satisfying habit to fall into… but taking a moment of self-awareness and realizing that the stuff we feel the need to verbalize oftentimes isn’t even worth addressing is major. i feel like unpacking my hater tendencies (while still accepting hate as a valid emotion) has made me enjoy things so much more and made me a less annoying person to be around? 😭

Hey I used to be this be this way too. I used to complain about everything, and its because I have anxiety and I tend to let those negative thoughts rule my mind. Not an excuse, just a reason. Ever since I've focused on loving, my anxiety has decreased and my enjoyment has increased. My room is now full of things I've loved since I was a kid. I'm full on "cringe" and it feels awesome! And I love others showing their unique cringey sides!

i feel this is oftentimes a way to mask insecurity over not knowing enough about a certain thing to judge it by its own merits and wanting to maintain the image of being smart. i’ve noticed this behavior most in people who have no suspension of disbelief when watching a movie (including myself back in the day). it’s the most annoying thing in the world to be watching a movie with someone who is going “that’s not how that works in real life, this movie is so stupid” every five seconds, but i recognize that it’s just insecurity and ignorance speaking

once somebody commented that they didn't like my tiktok. i replied that they didn't have to watch it, then, and that i made it because *i* liked it. they then replied insulting my physical appearance - which was wild bc my face wasn't in the video at all, and the last time it HAD been in a video was a year prior, so they'd physically scrolled back to the bottom of my profile just to find something to make fun of me about... and for what lmao? all that effort when they could've just scrolled to a video they actually enjoyed. some things are worth your time and energy fighting against, but Other People Having Fun is not one of them lol.

THIS. It says SO MUCH about a person when they're like "I don't like what you do" and you ask them to leave or to just stop interacting if they don't want to see your content, and they suddenly go on a completely unrelated tangent. This is like one of my worst fears because I really struggle with criticism, but I also feel like it's one of the easier situations to deal with because when this happens, it's immediately clear that it's not your fault, it's theirs. Sorry this happened to you, hope you're having a good day :3❤️

People always pull the card when they're being a hater, "it's just my opinion, it doesn't matter and it shouldn't stop you from having fun" Welllll it's a bit hard to have fun when people are breathing down your neck telling you that you should feel shame for liking something earnestly. I've heard people saying 'hating is just as free as being kind' but i find it very exhausting. being so hateful and spiteful and something leaves me mentally tired and angry all the time, it leaves little room for joy to come in. I personally dislike people who brag about being haters, its not a thing to flaunt. Why is being a bad person to people such a flex for them? Hating doesn't make you quirky, and it really puts more of a strain on you mentally then just being neutral or kind, its much more refreshing to just ignore those you don't like rather then going out of your way to use time and energy to be hateful to them.
@doothi
@doothi Жыл бұрын
ahh yes i do agree with you in that hating can be exhausting to engage in, receive, and witness. at the end of the video i didn’t want to assume a moralist standpoint and outright tell people to fully unlearn hate because i recognize that it’s kind of a privileged viewpoint to have a more sunny and compassionate worldview. that being said, i did try making a huge nod toward unlearning unnecessary/excessive hatefulness while still being empathetic toward haters because, like i said, hating can be both addicting and a coping mechanism. but i fully agree that, if capable of doing so, being neutral or kind is much less exhausting and more liberated way of living 😭💕

I believe everyone has a touch of sadism in them, which is why we like to hate, but I'm convinced that people who derive pleasure from being a hater haven't done the proper "shadow work" as they say to face that inner sadism and realize just because their opinion is valid doesn't mean it should stop other people from being themselves.

i feel like hate has a time and place, and is in a sense, still necessary. if we block out those mad frustrated thoughts and try to always see everything in a positive light, then its just gonna make those feelings worse. we're bound to get upset about stupid things and be rude at times, but being able to reflect and see if they have any merit, to see if it falls more under critique, will help personal happiness so much . if it turns out to you just being an asshole, learning how to process why you want to hate on it so hard and how to see how it can be loved is SO IMPORTANT. i hope people who flaunt their hate will one day learn how to do this.

Hey, new viewer here. I'm very glad you managed to reflect on the mindset of being hateful in the very internetizen sense. It's hard to get out of the habit of doing these things, especially if you're more or less suffering yourself. A little note: sometimes, depressed people like me get to get angry in the ways you describe, like it's a coping mechanism. I know, I've had my angry depression moments, and more often than not, it has come out as being hateful, vindictive, and just downright selfish for reasons that turn out to be founded in only the things others say to argue why a thing is bad. It's been compounded with ADHD and a heavy case of RSD, so it did become recursive for quite a long while at some point in my short life, and sometimes, still crops up. I also find that allowing myself to feel things and have fun despite a "cringe" aspect (unless ofc said aspect is genuinely harmful to either yourself or others) often gets rid of the hatred altogether. It allows one to build empathy for something you otherwise wouldn't have it for. Hell, that's how I grew to respect and even like furries despite hating them at first. I realized that I was obsessed with wolves to the point where basically all my creative creations just morphed into Furry Central(TM) due to the fact that I could not let go of a race of werecreatures, mostly werewolves, that I was brewing long-term. I let myself have fun, then learned about the furry subculture, and bam. Suddenly, I lost the hating phase. Understanding bred empathy, then empathy bred self-reflection. I began using "cringe" as something to look upon as a sign of growing up and/or humanity rather than the worst thing in the world. I also grew from the furry stuff to learn that I viewed wolves in a more spiritual way than most people, and when I became a Norse pagan, it clicked that I was drawn to Fenrir and his pups, Skoll and Hati, all my life. It's human to be at least a little cringe, because that breeds self-reflection like what I had. I hope as you reflect and grow, you eventually come to understand and be at peace with yourself. Everyone deserves to be happy, but not at the cost of others.

9:26 here's the thing about "good taste" that I've learned. having it? is absolutely unnecessary. I used to really look down on people who liked marvel movies. I thought they were soulless corporate cash grabs and I thought people who liked them were "sheep." but then I realized, looking down on marvel fans was hurting _me_ more than it hurt them. just like you at the anime convention, I was being unkind to people who were expressing passion, except I was doing it in the name of "good taste." my hate didn't stop these fans, some even people in my own life who I care for dearly, from enthusiastically enjoying these movies. it just took away their joy of doing it publicly and made me bitter and mean. I realized, I was the problem. and then I started looking at my own taste in movies and books and realized I like things others would find "bad" too. I love she's all that, supernatural, taylor swift. and I don't just love these things, I think they're _good._ I used to always explain my love of things I thought left me open to criticism with the caveat of, "it's objectively bad but I love it." but who is this objective third person who is allowed to make these value judgments about the art I love? I realized that I have just as much authority to stand firm in my beliefs. I think there's a lot more value in saying, "I love this thing and think it's good" in the face of haterism, rather than bending over backwards to justify your love for something that might get you labeled as having "bad taste." do I think colleen hoover books are good? mostly, no. do I think it's productive to buy her books just to hate on them? no! you have so little time on this earth to spend it hating something someone did out of love and passion! yes, even if it is bad. I used to have a lot of fun doing just that. I used to watch hour long videos of people tearing colleen hoover books to shreds. then one day, for the sake of nostalgia, I clicked on one of those videos again and I realized something horrifying: the videos that had made me laugh so much before? now just seemed…mean. making fun of colleen hoover's prose or wording wasn't funny anymore. it was just mean. we're not all meant to be critics and even those who are, very few are good ones on my opinion. a lot of people like to hatewatch things and I can't stop them. but I live by two rules when taking in art of any kind: with respect to things made with love and passion I will critique but never demean them, and things made for the sake of money do not even deserve my attention long enough for me to hate them.

hating is also, unfortunately, a very social experience. the enemy of my enemy is my friend, so to speak -- and it's true. i've made some of my closest friends through being haters in private, where we'd vent our frustrations to each other instead of either vacating a space to avoid someone or blowing up in their face instead. at a certain point, being a "hater" starts becoming hyperbole. you don't always truly /hate/ these things, you just find them annoying or off-putting, and expressing those emotions to someone, be it in public or in private, can be extremely cathartic and at times, feel necessary. i think there's a difference between spreading hate as a personality or a content creator and connecting with your friends in private over something inconsequential you'll never bring up to someone else -- but i fear for how thin the line can be between the psychological rewards of both. you CAN derive the same sense of self-assurance and peace from getting a large, positive reaction from strangers online as you can airing your grievances out with your friends. it's a difficult balance to strike consistently, and i constantly remind myself and others of compassion and understanding. just because i find something bad, or i don't like it, or whatever, doesn't mean someone else can't derive enjoyment from it or act a certain way. my feelings are no less deserving of being felt in moderation and sincerity, too. for me, it's making sure that my actions and words lack outward malice, at least, in the way that would ever reach or harm someone they pertain to. it's impossible to expect everyone to keep everything bottled up, but it's an easy and gentle kindness to be considerate about where you express any intensely negative and unfiltered emotions. i really enjoyed this video and how it got me thinking!

I was a professional hater, I would watch cringe compilations on KZbin just to laugh at people having fun and expressing themselves or just sharing their interests on social media, at some point I posted my first video which was basically making fun of people's interests I didn't agree with. Basically what I'm saying is this video has really changed my view on how I look at other people's interests and every time I catch myself saying "that's cringe" or judging them, this video pops into my head and I think "it's what they like doing, why do I care so much, just because I don't agree with it doesn't mean I should react negatively to it ". I watched this video a few days ago and I came back here to leave this comment because I just saw a video on TikTok calling a duet of two people cosplaying stranger things characters cringe and usually I would've agreed but instead this video popped into my head and I realized it was just two people being creative in a way that interests them. I'm sorry for leaving such a long comment😅 but I just wanted express that your video changed me for the better and I really like that I've learned to stop judging and laughing because I wouldn't like that either.

hate reminds me that i do, in fact, have personal preferences. i like a lot of things, especially stuff thats traditionally low quality / low effort. there's been a researgence in 2010 era shitty art that looks all colorful and drawn by middle school children and i eat that shit *up*. they're fucking awesome with immaculate vibes. whenever i watch stuff with friends i usually like it and i worry im just being nice so i don't make them uncomfortable rather than an actual enjoyment of the media but whenever theres shit i don't like and can safely vent those feelings it makes me feel better because the nice things i say feel truer if that makes sense. there are also things i hate where i'm 100% in the right for hating, specifically windows and it's whole ecosystem, copyright and patent law where they cause demonstrable harm to the world and nobody seems to give a shit enough about it or even think they're a good thing. there's other stuff more serious than that that i hate even more but that gets into some super depressing things and you need to be able to pace yourself because as useful as hate can be for learning it can also burn you out when nobody around you minus your closest friends can understand and echo those feelings, especially when queerphobia & racism enter the picture and how little people are tackling those problems and how nobody wants to confront that shit even in spaces where things don't matter.

i also firmly believe toxic positivity is a thing. if you're seen as a hater but you point out valid flaws in something you can get a ton of people harassing you for having the wrong tone especially if said thing is popular. the source community struggles a lot from this issue and it can get *real toxic.* it makes it hard to determine a quality of a work from the outside and when you are talking about how you were feeling you are made to feel invalid and just a hater when you aren't enjoying a work you thought you would. it's the absolute worst feeling in the world in my opinion.
@terrestrialTerror

i also believe toxic positivity is a thing that can be real fucking shit. where people give something blanket praise when the thing itself isn't even that good and when you give your honest feelings while playing the thing people will call you just a hater and say none of your feelings are valid. it feels real fuckin bad when you're being gaslit into thinking your frustrations with a thing is just, not real. the source community has a huge issue with this where there's some amazing works out there but also a lot of shit ones made by inexperienced devs but if you try to provide criticisms you are belittled and ignored. reminds me a bit of the crypto space though i don't know what their incentives could be.

I remember when i was younger i dealt with a REALLY controlling friend who i followed this and that opinion on until like one day i snapped and it ended up getting me into anime and after that I kind of gave up caring what people thought as much because I enjoy it and it makes me happy. (This also happened with the same person and gacha, but literally i used that shit to vent and everything and i enjoyed making those videos. It was what i enjoyed doing even if it feels cringe looking back on some of that)

hey, you said you dont think anyone is going to come away from this video opting out of the hater lifestyle, and while I know I'm not going to stop hating everything, I also dont think thats possible but, I want to start noticing when I do think that, why those thoughts come up, I dont want it to be my first thought. And I think a lot of my fear of posting is rooted in well what id someone hates it. but like, what if someone likes it? what if that someone is me? i really enjoy your content and your, not so much critiques but, awareness of the negativity. its refreshing and helping me be a bit more self aware :3

I think "hating" can be done with a balance. For example I can be excessively tolerant of people and work quality, so sometimes it feels nice to balance things out, remembering I don't *have* to find good in everything. But that's tied to opinions, not hating for the sake of it all the time to the point where it becomes your literal identity. And also just hate on your own don't dogpile innocent people

Cause she recently said she lost interest in me (her friend that always comforted her whenever she needed) We’ve been friends since 2018. im never a hater but in this case i kind of am cause she shouldn’t be encouraged imo
