I never minded the Who's being flawed in this version, as I thought it was an interesting twist on the story. Both the Grinch and Whos needed to learn a lesson, and only when both of them came to their respective realizations would the cycle of hatred come to an end.

The Grinch has one of my favourite Ultra-Quick jokes. Where he's being relentlessly fed desserts as people encourage him, and then suddenly there's an Einstein-esque Scientist who spoons some green goo into his mouth whilst saying "Zis is NOT pudding", and Carrey just manages to hurriedly say "WHAT IS IT?!" in a voice of genuine panic, before being silenced with more puddings.

The detail about the Grinch originally being colorless is a lot more amusing when you remember that the Grinch was voiced by Boris Karloff in the 1966 animated movie. Which means that there are *two* famous literary characters that everyone envisions as green because of iconic performances by Boris Karloff.

There's a lot of crazy behind the scenes drama that happened on this movie. I heard from a crew member who worked on it say that when Ron Howard showed up in Grinch makeup Jim Carrey at first didn't recognize him and thought he was being replaced by another actor and had a meltdown on set.

my dad has worked for kroger for about 30 or 40 years, and when this movie came out he got this giant promotional blanket with the marketing designs of the grinch, cindy lou who, and max on it. he brings it out every christmas even though it's falling apart a little and every year i gotta look at the grinch's smugass face draped over the couch but yknow what? my dad loves that thing and just the grinch in general so much so i don't have the heart to make fun of it. idk why i just wanted to share

I disagree a bit about the Grinch backstory, sure it was a bit much, but I think giving the audience a reason to want to see the grinch become good again i feel is needed, If he was just a grouchy guy who hated christmas, I don't think it would of been as easy to make him good in the end. sure for the childrens book it works, because it takes 15 minutes to read aloud, but to just be an asshole for an hour, than in the last 30 minutes have a change of heart would of seemed more dumb too me

From November to December, just one month, it was every where. Every commercial, magazine, food branding, the creepy dolls, school supplies, it was non stop. Hilariously it was only 1 month, but feels like 4 months of marketing leading up to the movie. The green ketchup was probably the most memorable ad branding for me.

I will say in defense of giving the Grinch a backstory, is that the whole 'Please don't ask why, no one knows the reason' is a blatant lie, as the original story does show why the Grinch hated Christmas: The Whos were unintentionally obnoxious about it and were really loud. And obviously for a live action film they couldn't just leave it at 'The Grinch hates noise pollution'. Inconsistency was something Dr. Suess was quite consistent about, amusingly enough, like in the special Grinch Night, a prequel to the original Grinch, the Grinch is shown to have magic powers and size-changing abilities which he obviously didn't have in the original. Speaking of Grinch Night, I think it's fair to say the writers of the 2000 film took some inspiration from that, with the Whos living in fear of the Grinch.

Fun Fact: Rick Baker Said on The Joe Rogan Experience that Universal actually didn't want the make up on the Grinch and were just happy with a "green fur suit" but he pushed for the make up.

Baker is an absolute legend. People can say whatever they want about the content of the movies he was a part of. But my god, did he bring his A-game every damn time. Shame he retired.

Apparently, Jim Carrey insisted on the makeup as well, even though wearing it stressed him out so much that Universal hired a CIA agent who specialized in withstanding torture to help him out.

This is without a doubt my absolute FAVORITE Christmas movie ever. The performances, the design, the production, everything is fantastic. I love it. It feels like something that Dr. Seuss himself would appreciate if you've ever read his biography.

The greatest indicator to me about how real the Grinch feels is that I get *so immersed* in the movie that in my brain the baby and child versions of him are just exactly that, not an animatronic and a different actor.

Interestingly there is a extended cut of this movie but like most movies they put those scenes for tv & trailers & bonus features deleted scenes. There's even a YT channel dedicated to finding these scenes.

I was not a fan of this movie as a kid but my younger sister loves it. To me the 30 minute cartoon is the perfect version. However if one good thing came out of the movie it was the game on PS1. Super underrated gem for the console and very fun.

Companies making commercial products after very anti-consumerism messages is even older. The anime Evangelion has multiple moments where the creator yells at you for being a nerd who doesnt know how to talk to girls and has to have fantasy women to enioy life...while also having an absolutely insane ammount of merchendise starring said fantasy women.

One of my favorite trivia facts about this movie is that Jim Carrey apparently had to audition for this movie while he was working on Man On The Moon. But because he wanted to stay in character for the whole shoot, he essentially had to audition as Andy Kaufman pretending to be Jim Carrey pretending to be The Grinch.

I’ll admit I do have some fond memories of this movie whenever it aired on TV in December, but it does have its own fair share of flaws including the ones mentioned in the video. Adding a backstory to the Grinch was totally unnecessary since the story made it clear no one quite knows the reason, the movie even repeats the line in narration and it feels like they’re trying to have their cake and eat it too, the movie also doesn’t look colorful at all but more drab looking, the Whos looked pretty disturbing when they could’ve just made them look normal, and of course the 3 infamous scenes that were inappropriate for children (the Grinch landing on a woman’s bosom, shoving a mistletoe up his ass, and forcing someone to kiss Max’s behind while in their sleep) of which the Cat in the Hat movie amped up to 11 for worse. But yeah I’m sorry to admit, it just got worse for me on rewatch, though the best thing about it is Jim Carrey as the Grinch, he really gave it his all and mostly pulled it off pretty well.

I'll be 43 next week and just finished watching this movie for the first time. And I was a big Jim Carrey in the 90's. I am currently a huge fan of Taylor Momsen and the Pretty Reckless. I would have said "Cindy Lou Who Knew" but that Key Parry in the Grinch's origin story was pretty inciteful.

I’m sorry, I can’t help it: I love this movie. Jim Carry is a fantastic choice for the grinch, Rick Baker’s makeup is fantastic. I especially love the sets and size of the extra. After spending almost a decade of watching movies with CGI overload in both sets and extra, I love it when movies have real sets, large casts, mostly practical effects and all that it intails.

Its actually amazing to see how the movie did a complete 180. I remember liking it when it came out but it seem to garner a lot of hate from people. Now at this point the hate is only in very small corners and it has become a Christmas classic people watch every year. I personally wasn't bothered by the Grinch origin and to be fair while the books and animated short says no one knew why he hated Christmas you could guess from some of the stuff he said. Like he flat out hated the noise so you could assume hes just a grumpy person who hates noise and Christmas is rather loud.

Your experience with the poster was the same one I had but with Cat in the Hat a few years later. I loved the Grinch and Mike Myers so the poster excited me so much. I was also obsessed with the behind the scenes features on the Grinch DVD (which had a ton including games) when it released and played the Grinch PS1 game endlessly even though I couldn’t get past the second level. Love the rhyming in this video.
