As someone who still owns this movie and watched it before Home Alone, I would never think to compare the two. Their moods were SO different. For one, there's legit characters and emotions in Dennis while Home Alone felt like a familiar 90s era comedy, though it likely just shaped the decade admittedly. Home Alone is a power fantasy for a kid, and Dennis is a family drama where you learn to understand your neighbors even as a kid. Kind of a more developed form of the relationship in Home Alone 2 between the pigeon lady and McCulkin
@MsLeenite8 ай бұрын
I hear you, and you've made some valid points. Certainly, Kevin's remarkably clever and resourceful problem-solving was the meat of Home Alone. Everyone overlooked him, but it turned out he did fine on his own. But for me, a vital element of that film was the regular switch to Catherine O'Hara's ongoing struggle to get home to her child. Hughes could not leave her as a two-dimensional frazzled neurotic; we had to see how terribly ashamed she felt about the situation, and that she would move heaven and earth to get to Kevin. So it was mostly a kid's power fantasy, but also a neglect redemption fantasy for parents. Perhaps I was so struck by this because I was an adult when I saw Home Alone.
@Sam-lm8gi8 ай бұрын
I loved both films as a kid, but TBH, I probably watched Dennis the Menace more often than either of the Home Alone films (unless you count watching Marv's skeleton getting electrocuted on a loop fifty times in a row). Dennis the Menace was simply more emotional.

I saw this movie opening weekend and I have been a cheerleader ever since. Not only did they perfectly nail the story matching my memories of the TV series my mom introduced me to, because it was a show she loved as a kid but the casting is great, with Walter Matthau being my favorite Mr Wilson

Another awesome video! Absolutely loved this as a kid (almost wore out the VHS tape) and still love it to this day! Thank you for making this video Joe, and for ending with Walter Matthau's quote "Martha, where are the GD garden lanterns?!" :)

Dude he gave my ass nightmares as a kid. I was the same age as the Dennis actor and looked virtually identical to him, so for some reason that added to it because it was like seeing myself with that scary ass dude.

Being from the UK this may be sacrilege to say, but I never cared for Dennis & Gnasher at all. He was a bully, but this Dennis never had any real malice behind his actions. But I would regularly watch that Dic cartoon (which, yes, was also re-titled to simply 'Dennis') and yeah, I enjoyed the movie as a 10 year old kid. As a side note, wow, I never knew that was Phil Hartman voicing Mr Wilson!!

“New pajamas, God bless em’”. This was a staple movie that my family watched obsessively when I was growing up. There’s about 25 lines from it that we still break out of the closet and use when we all get together or when one is warranted during texting with each other. Walter Matthau plays the most relatable/ crotchety old man I can think of in any movie (with the exception of grumpy old men). I literally feel like I’m just watching somebody’s neighbor in real life. Underrated actor. That movie is a 90s classic with so many great scenes and lines.

As a child when this came out, I never matched this as a competitor with Home Alone. Can't recall if I had heard of the Dennis the Menace comic strip, but the movie itself was great for what it was. As for your mention of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson feeling like a real couple, it certainly did for me! Even watching this video, I'm reminded of my grandparents, who even had similar names (George and Margaret rather than George and Martha). Something about the way the two of them played those roles that just made a child WANT to be near them! Oh, and now I've seen one of my own daughters have nearly an identical look that Dennis has in a couple scenes; it is truly frightening to see it as an adult!

There needs to be a minimum age for nominating an actor for a Razzie, if you ask me. I'm sorry to say Dennis Ketcham was a case like Christopher Milne, where he grew up to resent the famous thing named for him. Not just because he had to endure DECADES of his father telling all of America what a bratty kid he once was, but apparently, Hank Ketcham had a wandering eye, if you know what I mean.
@torstenscholz62438 ай бұрын
There is nowadays. The razzies have been heavily criticized for nominating underage actors for worst actor in recent years, which is why they now have chosen to only nominate adults.

I still have vivid memories of seeing this in a theatre at the age of 7. It was at the Uptown Theater in Utica, back when it was one of the last large, single screen theaters. That shot from inside Mr. Wilson’s mouth was quite an experience!

I loved this movie as a kid and still enjoy it as an adult. It's not groundbreaking or anything but it's a fun movie with a great cast and I miss actors like Walter Matthau and that generation in general. They made better movies and didn't feel the need to put their politics above the entertainment.
@KairuHakubi8 ай бұрын
And even if they had challenged the audience that way (instead of just been entertaining) you KNOW they would have had DIFFERENT characters have different viewpoints, and just have fun with the clashing, not really taking sides. And we wouldn't have minded it as much, because nobody felt like the other side was actively destroying their lives (and half of us are right. and the other half is right to worry because we absolutely would). And when you feel safe, you're a lot happier to hear references to conflict.
@torstenscholz62438 ай бұрын
Yup, bringing back the good ol' time of the 90s, when films and actors were still allowed to be simply funny and entertain people without any political undertones and not everything had to be overly politically correct. In the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s everything in entertainment just felt so much lighter and more innocent. Today, political correctness and woke cancel culture have ruined all creativity.
