It's not the death of the dog thats sad, though it also plays a part, it's the idea of leaving your family expecting to come home and see their smiles only to realize, at least we do as viewers, you won't be coming home and you won't see you family again. That's what made me cry.

The story of Laika is soo sad D: and the fact that they rushed the ship being built probably played a part in her death. As she died from too much heat because the cooling system thing malfunctioned and didn't work as that's why she died of heat the cooling thing didn't work. Also the fact that they sent poor Laika in a rushed ship that had a 50% chance of not working completely because it was rushed (Sputnik 2 was made in 4 weeks) I wish Laika had made it back she would have been a great pet but no she had to die of heat exhaustion in the first few days up her trip in the vast empty black void of space (where no one will hear you scream) D:

Last year my science teacher told us about Laika, and I thought it was so sad then. But during the last minute or so of the song, I actually felt tears in my eyes, particularly at the last few lines. I don't think I've ever cried because of vocaloid song before, but I did with this.... It's really amazing, and I'm glad Laika is remembered still. Thank you for sharing the English translation of this song.

Translation to the Russian. It may not be completely right, though. "The Earth is a cradle of the mind, but we cannot live forever in a cradle." -Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky Start at 2:30 p.m. November 3, 1957 She left land and went into space. Sung by Hatsune Miku. Dedicated to the memory of Yazdovsky Vladimir Sergei Pavlovich Kvanoich. I had nothing better to do, so I decided to translate it, plus I was wondering what it said.

I first read about Laika when I was only about...7 (It was in a school reading book about space specially for that age group) I felt really sad and angry about what happened to her, I’ve always loved animals *a lot* (more than people XD) I feel she really doesn’t get enough recognition, it’s all about some human. Honestly, if they wanted to send some(living)thing into space, send a human! If you guys want to do this for the benefit of *your* own species, then send one of your own kind! Don’t just choose an innocent dog, her life means just as much as yours! That’s just selfish. Seriously though, humanity just makes me feel sick sometimes.

My guess for the text would be the date & time of the launch, and then "she left into the new space" (according to Google Translate, sounds OK though.) The word next to the star, well, I've no idea what the third character is, so problem there. The next two words are probably "sung by" since the next ones are "Hatsune Miku".

This song is so pretty to listen to but whenever I think of the meaning I get sniffly... Reading some of the previous comments, I'd like to say that what's sad and wrong here isn't the fact that a dog died from overheating. The fact is that humans sent the dog out alone, knowing she would die, and not even bothering to try to bring her back alive.

@TheKanonHara A pretty damn big exaggeration, yes. But aside from that, I think your point is a rather cold one. What, are people who hear about the story of Laika and feel sorry for her just supposed to say to themselves "hey, I shouldn't pity this dog, lots of dogs all the time so it doesn't really matter"? All animals and humans as well die all the time, that doesn't mean it's a bad thing to feel sympathy when you hear the story of one of them.
