Robin, her son, could've confirmed where Hattie's ashes are, but sadly, he has recently passed. I had the strange task of clearing out the last of Hattie's bits from the attic of her former home when Robin sold it. There were still a few family photos, annotated scripts of "Sykes", make-up, and cookery books filled with unfeasibly rich recipes... Gloria Hunniford bought the house and discovered a shoebox full of Hattie's cheque stubs that due to a strange compulsion, I had tucked into the attic eaves.

Oh wow! Did you meet Hattie? Yes both her sons have passed haven’t they? I would have LOVED to have seen the annotated scrips and the family photos - it must have been very moving to handle those treasures from such an icon of comedy!

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I didn't meet Hattie, it was about 10 yrs after her death - I had been asked to clear what was left into bin bags, and I was too young and shy to point out the importance of some of the bits, and the attic contents had already been 'triaged' - Hattie was such an icon to me, that it was a very sobering task. Her home in Fulham had the friendliest vibe - perfect for entertaining!

@@sillysausage2244 oh my goodness! That’s such a shame! But I can understand - when I was younger I wouldn’t have had a clue - now though!!! Totally different! I can imagine the vibe there - I know she was very generous with her friends - they were always welcome and she was a brilliant hostess by all accounts - and they all went there for Christmas - Kenneth Williams and Joan Sims would take their mothers with them and apparently they were both very difficult women!!! But Hattie welcomed everyone with open arms from what I’ve heard.

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I still kick myself - let's hope someone went through the bags before they were disposed of... One photo is burnt into my memory - a black and white of Hattie looking just like 'matron' but in a summer dress with lots of construction and support under it, sitting on a tartan picnic blanket under a tree, a beaming smile, a flask and some sandwiches - I would guess John was behind the camera... Let's hope Gloria enjoyed/is enjoying the comforting vibes.

I bet!!! I would if too! That photo sounds fantastic - I’d have loved to see it - I collect vintage photos and Diana Dors photos in particular! There is a magic about them that modern day photos just don’t have - to me anyway! I do hope someone saved them! I wonder if Gloria is still there! I’d have also loved to have taken a browse around the house. You were very lucky and I feel very lucky that you shared this memory - thank you so much!

Thank you for this one, I loved both of them and was pleased to find out that Hattie Jacques and I shared the same birthday. A lovely tribute. There was nothing to compare to the fun joy and laughter of the Carry-ons. Hattie, Joan and co. were so much part of our lives and i loved them all including our Babs, to the end ❤. Well I guess they chose to live their lives in the public sphere - and from what I’ve read and from interviews I’ve seen they were very appreciative of being recognised and of people enjoying their work - I don’t know if they had made any requests for what they wanted after they passed away - in Hattie’s case it was in the hands of her sons as next of kin I would assume and in Joan’s case she had no children, partner or siblings so I’m not sure who would of made the decisions about her funeral or whether she left instructions - so I really can’t say xx I can’t imagine that having loved their profession so much that they would have objected to being remembered with a plaque ❤️ but who knows?

Fascinating! Thank you once again. I used to love all the Carry Ons as a child growing up. I never knew Hattie was once married to John Le Mesurier. He was a kind of crush of mine in Dad's Army. What a very well produced memorial for two great actresses. Thank you. Isn’t it sad that two such famous people should have such a secretive and almost ignominious end? Maybe that was the way they wanted it. Thanks to them both for all the hilarious hours of fun and laughter they gave us. Truly missed. I am not surprised Hattie died of a heart attack, she was a chain smoker and always boasted that she only ever lit one cigarette a day 😱

I loved the Carry on Films as a kid despite only being born in 1989 I watched them on TV and collected the VHS tapes, my two favourites were Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques. I never once laughed at Hatties size and to me I never looked at her as a large lady, to me Hattie was an incredible comedic actress and had such an incredible presence. Reading her biography I was very saddened to hear about her health problems and her feelings about her weight. I too have always struggled with my weight so reading that Hattie had similar issues only made me feel a connection with her all the more.

thank you so much for your lovely comment, I completely understand where you're coming from. It's wonderful to hear about your fond memories of the Carry On Films, and it's heartening to know that Hattie Jacques left such a lasting impression on you. I've also spent my life (well actually from my late teens when I didn't have an issue but I thought I did) struggling with weight-related challenges. So I also understand that a shared experience can indeed create a powerful bond and enhance our appreciation for the resilience and humanity behind the public personas we admire. It's yet another reason I love both Hattie and Joan and you might know (or maybe not!) that I'm a huge fan of Diana Dors who also had similar issues - and I have always admired the way she handled them! Thank you for watching the video! It's immensely appreciated xxx

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Oh I adore Diana Dors an incredible actress although I have to be honest I'm more familiar with her work in the 70s and 80s such as scary movies like Theatre of Blood, From Beyond the Grave, Nothing But the Night and her comedy work with the Two Ronnie's and Steptoe and Son. I never knew she too had those issues with her weight. But yeno as well as her undoubted acting ability Diana even in those later years where she was more curvaceous to me demonstrated that she was a perfect example of being curvy and yet very sexy and an attractive woman. Keep up the good work! Xxx

It's wonderful to hear that you appreciate her work across different genres, from scary movies to comedy collaborations. Diana Dors indeed had a versatile talent that left a lasting impact that is sometimes very underrated - and I completely agree she was very sexy and attractive from the start of her career to the end, she was very inspiring - the more I know about her the more I adore her! They both gave so much pleasure to so many people,yet suffered so much in their private ( and not so private lives) As usual you dealt with the highs and lows with dignified, respectful treatment, and with true feelings towards them both.❤Much of the details given,we're already known, but none the worse for that. I believe that Joan was helped financially by Liz Frazer, towards the end of her life. A roll in the tv comedy series " on the up " with Dennis Waterman&Sam Kelly. Was a tiny gem,and gave joan a catchphrase . In answer to the query " just the one Mrs Wembley " the reply " yes just the one" The fact that Robin and brother Kim have passed,it made me think how important your channel is.We must as each generation leaves the stage,screen and the wireless ( its me age) We must keep the memories alive. To share, with younger people the talents of such stars. The joy& happiness they gave. Keep vloging ❤😊Allan&Family

Hi Allan! Oh my goodness I love Hattie and Joan!!! I’m intending to do individual videos on them both - they were extraordinary - yes Liz Fraser did indeed help Joan with paperwork and getting her financial help - Joan had got into a bit of a pickle! Liz is another of my favourites ❤️ have you seen Morrisey’s video ‘Ouija Board’ Joan totally makes that video! Xx

Life is very strange sometimes. I've just finished watching a movie which featured Joan Sims and was wondering what happened to her and when I came on here there was your post. She was one of the best in a run of the mill comedy. It was called Please Turn Over and the scene that stuck in my mind was her as the family maid confronting an unwelcome caller at the front door and her action of talking around a cigarette in her mouth whilst being rude to the caller and slamming the door in his face was priceless. By the way just today I received a date of return for the first proof reading of my book.

I haven’t seen that!!! There’s another one for my list! Ohhhh congratulations! That’s so exciting! Good luck with the proof reading - it’s hard job because when it’s your own writing it’s like you can’t see the wood for the trees! Do you have a launch date?

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre They say there will be one more shorter proof reading. They also sent me a promotions guide. So I've contacted a tv cameraman/director who has filmed me before with a view to an interview once the thing is published. I've recently found a library near my flat in Prague which has English language books to lend and think I will get maybe my biggest kick out of the whole thing by one day giving them a copy.

I can totally understand Joani Sim's enthusiasm to go back to work each time a new "Carry On" movie script came through the post... I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when all of the cast got together, a magical time it must have been. I loved both Hattie and Joan, and how strikingly beautiful Joan was especially in her youth, in those earlier films. Despite the mutual respect between the cast and the film's producer and director, I still maintain it was a very cruel thing that very early on in the film series, they started to cast Joani in the battle axe archetype and she would remain so for most (if not all) of the films, and it couldn't have done her confidence much good when they cast younger, slimer and more beautiful girls to act along side her. They really did do her a great disservice, but despite this I'm sure she and the rest of the brilliant cast had many laughs and great times together. I really loved her character of house cook in the brilliant "On The Up" sitcom, there is a real warmth about that show. I'm so glad she did finally kick her alcohol habit, losing close friends and other loved ones is never easy but somehow you just have to...."Carry On", after all, Life doesn't stop for anyone. I'd like to think that Joan & Hattie are up there along side the rest of the mad Carry On crew, sharing memories & laughs. What a great gift to British comedy these two brilliantly talented women were. I have the Carry On Boxset and I still enjoy watching them. Thankyou Hattie, we were always laughing WITH YOU, never at you, a beautiful soul inside & out, And Joan a wonderful and very funny woman, may you Rest In Peace, Thankyou for the laughs. And Thank You for yet another great video, a great job as usual xx

Thank you so very much for this lovely thoughtful comment! It destroyed both Joan and Hattie’s self esteem - which I can completely understand - I’m not sure which one struggled with it the most to be honest! But they never let it stop them being absolutely brilliant in every role they took on! When Hattie was working with Tony Hancock all the jokes were on her weight -she reached a point where she told them it was too much - I did wonder if that figured in Tony’s decision to stop working with her x
@huggyhuggsbears1265
@huggyhuggsbears1265 2 жыл бұрын
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I'd hazard a guess and say it probably did sway his decision not to work with Hattie. I think with Tony it was all about getting the laughs, be it at someone else's cost, but decisions on which direction "HIS" show went had to be on his own terms. I'd say well done to Hattie for voicing her objection, I dare say Tony took exception to that. A complicated man, despite Kenneth William"s hugely popular appearance on the TV show, Tony objected to his use of funny voices, so Kenneth left, even Tony's long term friend Sid James who had worked with Tony for years and said his time on the show was the happiest time he'd ever had in his professional career, even he wasn't spared and Tony left him behind to go it alone, on these two occasions it must have been Tony's influence (I'm sure) that led to both actors being axed from the show. I truly believe it was Tony's loss for distancing himself from three great comedic actors. No one can be a one man band, everyone needs somebody. Still I can't feel too bad for them, as they all made a huge name in the comedic world...and Rightfully So!!
@BeautifulBadandBizarre
@BeautifulBadandBizarre 2 жыл бұрын
Oh it’s such a difficult one isn’t it! A sort of dichotomy - insecurity on the one hand - over inflated ego on the other and trying to balance them out - I do think quite a lot of stars experience this and I think Tony wasn’t handling it well - and it fuelled his depression - It was more complicated than that - by I think that’s a very basic view - and such a terrible shame because all the people you’ve mentioned were magnificent on their own but together they were pure magic! ❤️

I'm soo glad you enjoyed it 😀 I am a bit obsessive, I always try to get things right but sometimes it can be a bit of a grey area and I don't always take the correct path - however, I knew one thing - that first tree wasn't an oak tree as a few people had previously said it was while standing underneath it! So that set me off on a mission lol Ohhh and your Kenneth Williams commen!!! I thought that address was still standing too!!! But like you I found out it was no longer there - which always makes me sad - I do wish sometimes they would restore places instead of demolishing them - although I know in some case demolishing is for the best but where possible I prefer preservation! Thank you so much for your comment - it's made me laugh and definitely brightened my day! xx

I love Hattie, a great actress and so funny (which she always underplayed). I was fortunate that when I worked for the BBC in the 70s, we got tickets (the Supervisor of the Ticket Unit was a friend) to a recording of 'Sykes' at Television Centre. As staff we were able to buy pre-show drinks at the bar of the BBC Club. After sitting down, who should come into the bar and sit near us was Hattie and Derek Guyler! We didn't want to impose on them, so we just said good evening. However Hattie was very gracious and when she found out we were going to be in the audience, hoped that we had a good time and hopefully enjoy the show. WE DID!
