This is so wrong.... Unless it has been customized/modified, hitches by factory design are design to hold typically 500-700lb of vertical weight close to the hitch. When you that 18-24" inches out, the capacity drops exponentially, probably from 700lb to 450lb. Placing a 1000lb is a certainly a call for disaster. I would never do that to my GL1800 that is roughly around 840lb. Money can buy many things, but common sense.

the problem i came to realize while recently researching the same solution is the fact that it’s the limitation of the hitch tongue, which has weight capacity of 10% of your towing capacity and not the carrier in most cases
@julesvern-u4e Жыл бұрын
I was just about to comment on this.. so many people have no clue that tongue weight is even a thing. Im struggling to believe this guys truck's tongue weight can handle 1000lbs. And tongue weight is a sheer force straight down.. now an entire heavy motorcycle sticking 3 feet out on a lever basically.
@mikeb8342 Жыл бұрын
While it's best to have about 10-15% of your towed weight on the tongue, your receiver often will handle far more than that. A class III receiver is typically good for 500# (up to 1000# when towing and using a weight distributing hitch), a class IV is more (1000#?). If trying to haul any 500+# motorcycle, I'd add some additional strength to my class IV receiver.... just to be sure. I'd also consider a "helper" to my suspension to prevent nosing up (air bag setup is my 1st choice).
@jr.61999 ай бұрын
Most hitch manufactures dont have the engineering spec'd out. The comments stated on this commercial skips some issues. I've bent hitches by overloading, then i got educated. Joe shared the fram/reinforcing possible needs but failed to mention overloading axle capacity and the how the weight if 18" out from tongue adds 50% more to the working load. More details later on what happens with overloaded tires.
@brianrussell9419 Жыл бұрын
I have a class 5 hitch & Dually Ram that I considered this setup to carry my 850 lb Streetglide. Hitch is good for 1200 lb tongue weight but the carrier being out about 2 feet brings the max tongue weight down about 50% . 25% per foot extended out . Too light of a setup for a heavy bike

Please don’t think I am bad mouthing this product, I am not. I have something similar and I can tell you depending on your vehicle, the load the bike puts on your back shocks makes a difference. If your bike is heavy, let’s say more than 500lbs, you will work those shocks to the point of replacement. I suppose if you have lift bags in the back it would help but too much weight back there also makes your front end squirrelly while driving. I still use mine for my smaller bike but for bigger bikes a trailer is the stable way to go, at least for me.

I call bull shit. There are people that actually use their trucks to haul 1, 2 ,3, 4 thousand pounds on a regular basis and our shocks are just fine. What keeps the thing from rocking back and forth. I made a carrier that's similar but I took my hitch off and welded 2 more reciever tubes at the end of the hitch. In line with the middle tube. Having 3 mounting tubes off the hitch makes it very stable . And I use a Harbor freight wheel chock. I've have hauled a KLR 650 over 3000 miles with no problems. On the back of a 2001 F250 7.3 with rear air bags. Weighing the truck before and after. It took 400 lbs. Off the front axle and put 1000 lbs. On the rear axle. I'm not to sure I'd put my 2019 Goldwing on the carrier. Since it weights 350 lbs more than the KLR. I run a tall Leer topper on my truck and I have to loosen the straps on the R.S. of the motorcycle and let it lean back to get it in the topper. I've also hauled a 2018 Vstrom 1000XT,

Id like to see you put a Hog on that trailer hitch carrier. I have a 600 pound K1200GT BMW and I wouldn't trust this single thin walled single throat connector. So much force and weight is on these hitch receivers that are mostly weighted for 600 pound tongue weight. You can add all the cross beam struts but at the end its all on the one post that goes into your receiver. You need solid steel tubing And cross supports to keep the twisting action to a minimum. Your hitch Trailer gets a zero. You can get away with these small light weight bikes but I would not be selling these as full size bike Hitch Trailers...

It's not just the weight. It's where it is and what's doing the hauling. 700-800+ lbs that far behind the rear axle makes weight loading dicey on the wrong vehicle? Hit a big dip in the road and lose traction on the front wheels or they literally pop up in the air. I've had that very thing happen on smaller work truck improperly loaded to far aft. While it'd seems it'd be great for lesser weight bikes - I'd rather not do that for a harley. Just too many bad memories of hauling jobs and people loading my truck wrong. Put it in the bed or on it's own trailer chassis and feel safe about unsure road conditions ahead etc.. But's that's me.

I think there's a warning tag on it that says the minimum IQ requirements to use this. Don't try to ride it on like the guy on KZbin loading on the back of a pick up and the bottom of the bike caught on the break over of the ramp and the bike fell on top of him on the ground. Anything involving the words hold my beer doesn't end well. Maybe a heavy bike you could make a temp secured walking extension on top of the tie down extensions. There are safe options that require that IQ to make it work safely. A wooden home made walking ramp to leave at home or put in the back of the truck. Maybe 12" wide with a couple 2 or 3ft 2x4s screwed to the bottom perpendicular for stability to eliminate the oops, crash, ow. I think light duty mesh and angle ramps like the bike uses clamped or bolted would work fine and if you insist on riding it then make one for the inside also. THERE! problem solved.

Some of theses questions are easily answered by watching the video. Didn't you see the two straps going from the tie down rings going up over the tail gate? For those that never strapped a bike down before Look at the IQ requirements I was taking about earlier. If you fall below those or have any doubts DON'T DO IT. Get someone to show you the ropes. Save up extra cash for repairs and hospital bills. First if you rode or pushed the bike up there and the straps are in the tool box then your IQ falls below the required amount to do the job with out damage and pain. You learn to have the straps where you need them and a way to get them in your hand. A magnet on a string? A grabber? The higher your IQ the more solutions you'll come up with. I've had my learning pains. I pulled up in the camp ground leaning left and back, leveled the trailer dropped and blocked the ramp door, added a 2x6 extension the had 6 drunks that had been there for a day fight each other trying to keep the brand new 09 Dresser from falling backing it out of the trailer. As I occasionally look at some of the 6500 pictures on my phone, in particular to this story of to this camping trip (Thunder in the Cascades at Coopers lake Pa by I79). I look at the pictures of the truck and toy hauler sitting there on the hill wondering why I didn't unload it my self 50ft away on the black top. Go figure.

Add a tire hoop for the front tire and it will better stabilize the bike before the tie-down straps are in place. Also wondering how much wear from loading there is on the hitch point after many miles. Most pickup hitches (class 3) are rated to 600lb tongue weight at most. And all bouncing and vibration from being loaded with a 400 to 800+ pound bike, let alone the hitch weight itself, will be borne right where the tongue enters the hitch.

Just gonna guess that a long wheel base touring bike will be too heavy and extend too far each side of the truck to be legal, unless you are driving a huge truck.

Great concept...I would put a little more emphasis on the hitch classification required...3- would be borderline, 4 gets a person around a 1000 lbs, class 5 ..no problem..

How the hell do I push my 1500 goldwing up a ramp.. even with 2 guys it would b tough..
@Sny7343 жыл бұрын
Look at some of my replies and you'll see. It involves IQ and problem solving. Maybe the road is fairly level and the drive way goes uphill you just pull up perpendicular to the drive way, now when you put the ramp down on the drive it's not as steep. Or, Or, Or you're in a parking lot that leans to the left then the ramp won't be as steep. Or, Or, Or, maybe there's a sidewalk you can put the ramp up on the curb and not be as steep, Or, Or, Or, IQ and learning there's always a way.

I think those are between 700-850 lbs??? It will hold it. Mine weighs about 740. It's really incredible. I sat on my bike to test it and I'm fat, so I took it over 1,000 lbs. Granted, I wasn't on the road when I sat on my bike while on the Hauler but I'm impressed I didn't snap the thing. :) Thanks for watching.

DOT regulation only lets you have a 4 foot overhang off of a back of a vehicle that looks like it's over for foot
@Sny7343 жыл бұрын
Is that a question or your expert opinion? If you look real close when it touches the floor right before he inserts it in the receiver you can see it comes tit high and 6 to 8 inches that's touching the floor goes in the receiver. Get out your tape and measure your tit height. I highly doubt he's risking everything he owns selling something illegal.

Who has a vehicle with a 1,000 lb tongue rating ??? I wouldn't think many? My Touareg is 770 lbs., and it is stouter than most vehicles, it is tow rated at 7,600 lbs.
@MotorcycleMonkey3 жыл бұрын
My Tundra has a 1,040 weight rate and an F-150 has a little more than the tundra. Just so you're aware, Joe Hauler does have lighter weight haulers for lighter bikes. He also recommends that you check the weight capacity before you purchase if you're thinking about it. Smart of you to do that.
@keithmason5123 жыл бұрын
I think what Kevin is asking is a standard class 3 2" hitch is rated at 5000# or so, however the tongue weight is only rated at 500#. That's 500# on the tongue or ball that only sticks out approx 8". So a 700# or 800# bike sitting 24 to 30 inches away from the hitch itself is not safe or legal.

I can see a dangerous situation when you got a bike on there that is kind of heavy and hitting bumps in the road that would create that thing bouncing like it's on a trampoline because of no support, I'm out

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. That contraption with that weight that far out will exceed tongue weight limits.

Any ideas for a short woman....I'm not sure I could walk my bike up like that
@MotorcycleMonkey4 жыл бұрын
I would say that you'd want the automatic lift so you can roll it flat on the ground and then let the motor do the work. It's more money but it's very nice. Another option: What I've done is parked my truck on the edge of my driveway on the street and back it up to the curb so it sits really low. Not quite flat but very close. I hope this helps.

Yeah, sorry but there is no way his pickup and frame hitch is rated for 1000 lb. tongue weight, especially when moved out 2-3 feet from the receiver, not to mention the amount of rear biased weight on the truck while driving any kind of distance.

Compress those front forks before it’s tied down. Otherwise they’ll compress when you hit a bump and your bike will indeed hit the tailgate or go the other way. And better to tie them around the handlebars so you don’t splay the forks out.
@julesvern-u4e Жыл бұрын
so many people have no clue that tongue weight is even a thing. Im struggling to believe this guys truck's tongue weight can handle 1000lbs. And tongue weight is a sheer force straight down.. now an entire heavy motorcycle sticking 3 feet out on a lever basically.
