I am so old I remember using the other platform at Polsloe Bridge. Yes it did only have a rail then but H&S didn't seem to be a thing back then. I've also caught a train from Platform 2 at Central. The last Exmouth trains used to run from there. There used to be flower beds between platforms 1 and 3 where the old platforms were, I guess they took them away due to the cost of maintaining them, which was a shame

It sounds like Polsloe Bridge was as bad back then as it is today!

If the wind is blowing in the right direction, you can hear the station announcements at Exeter Central at St James' Park.

Jen, I can tell you that posloe bridge looks the same as it looked in 2017/18 *side note there's a station planned just up the line which might be called monkerton which is proposed to be linked to a supposed housing estate

Great video, Jen. I used to live (when I was at uni) about 10 minutes from St James Park and Angie (my wife now) lived about 4 doors down from the new north road entrance at Exeter central so it brings back memories! St James Park (I note the railway station signs have an errant apostrophe (st James’ Park - which implies more than one st James!) - there’s no apostrophe in that one or in the football ground name. Newcastle’s ground is called St James’s Park (with an apostrophe!) Fun fact, they had to extend the platforms at St James park as one of them could only take one coach!
@simonlowe3766
@simonlowe3766 5 ай бұрын
James' and James's are both acceptable ways to add a possessive apostrophe to the name James. Neither implies more than one James. This is correct for any name ending in s.
@MrGreatplum
@MrGreatplum 5 ай бұрын
@@simonlowe3766 - you are right, of course - I should have got that! In this case though, St James Park should have no apostrophe

Locally to me (and you in the past) Bordesley Green still takes the prize for the worst station. Although personally its lack of any appealing features is peak Birmingham.

Exeter and Plymouth is the biggest rivalry. The Devon sides have very different fortunes, Plymouth doing well in the 2nd tier, Exeter struggling to stay up in the 3rd tier and Torquay have fallen down to the 6th tier

I always got lost around Exeter , if driving it was full of traffic, if walking just a little too large. Was the Greenslades (later National Travel South-West) garage near Polsoe Bridge - I remember lots of brick arch rail bridges in the area (prob not , it was more on the Dawlish area approach into Exeter)

St James park reminds me that it is possible to go from there to Newcastlr Utd's ground by train (if you count the Metro as such).

Polsloe bridge is loved in a bittersweet way. Yes, its a terrible station, but its also very convenient and nice in its own terrible way. Btw the RTT display does work. It just only shows departures and on the side where people are entering. Which sort of makes sense ig. Its certainly enough for the station. The scaffolding is there because the concrete is crumbling (on both platforms!). I think the concrete dates back from the 1920s lol. They'll have to rebuilt it within 20 years, and hopefully they can make it safer, more accessible and perhaps nicer :). St James' park could also do with a bit of a reconstruction since its also not very accessible I believe. The ramp is too steep, It's also annoying how those stations only get hourly, yet are >5 minutes away from central. Should really be getting a minimum of every 20 minutes. Also Central really needs a west-facing bay.

Enjoyable video as usual Jen! When you said St James' Park and football, I immediately thought 'Newcastle', then realized you weren't in Newcastle 😄! The only reason I can think of why someone would go to Polsloe Bridge, is to do a 'Visiting Every Station' thingy

The more famous St James Park is served by the Tyne and Wear Metro and was opposite Gallowgate Coach Station, where I used to get the Border Clipper coach to and from Whitehaven( £ 4 return in 1992).

Aww good old Polsloe Bridge, I used to live around the corner, got the train every day to Digby, in fact I was there on Wednesday to get train to Exeter St Davids then on to work, on a horrible Voyager (6 long long hours!). Not an accessible station by any stretch, I was very out of breath after trying to carry my suite case up those steps. I think the 'improvements' where the textured markings on the platform and the train display (that didn't work in your video, but was working last week).

St James' Park used to be my local (I'm not an Exeter City fan). The station doesn't really get that busy on matchdays since the ground is close to the city centre, it is more used by local residents (largely students). I know it is only a 15 min walk from Exeter Central but I do think the station would benefit with half hourly services instead of hourly

Good job I had finished my drink before watching. BTW I would pronounce "St James' Station" as you did and spell it as it is spelt.

It would be a difficult one to upgrade though. It is above the road and in the middle of housing so any improvements would cost millions. There are plenty of buses which go past there and more frequently so personally I wouldn't use it anyway.
