Such a good example of "if you build it , they will come". Dirty , dodgy platforms says we don't care. Add dirty old equipment and you are telling staff, we don't care about you, either. It doesn't have to be posh, but clean is a start and it goes a long way to making people feel safe and welcome. The little lending library is the only thing that makes me feel like someone local has a feeling of caring about their neighbors

What a weird comment. Why wouldn’t we care about our neighbours in Cornwall??

Another good reason people drive to Cornwall is the cost, I tried to organise a holiday for a family of four, using the train from Manchester. Over £1200 and 23 hours each way. It was an absolute no brainer to choose to drive. Even flying to Newquay and hiring a car for the week was cheaper and we could have done a package to somewhere in Europe all inclusive for less than the train fare alone

Sandplace gets its name from a wharf on the river where sea sand was stored which, together with lime from Plymouth and burnt in nearby Kilns was used to improve the acid soils in the area. According to Wikipedia.

Considering the investment to the Falmouth branch, this whole line is very sad - especially considering the popularity of Newquay - I expect a passing loop half way and another platform at Newquay could do the job well!

The stations on the western half of the Sutton loop on Thameslink have lawns, the lawns are two courses of paving away from the edge rather than just one but if you're ever in London and feel the need for train related grass try West Sutton, Sutton Common, St Helier, MordenSouth, South Merton & Wimbledon Chase
@Illvillainy

Don't know what is sadder, the state of this branch or a city the size of Manchester not having step-free access. Overall, almost definitely the line but either way, both are telling. The multiduct is pretty at least.

I had the same pastie issue at Truro station. The buffett labelled as local only sold Ginsters, which to me isn't a traditional pastie. Still those dirty windows.

5:33 would had call it a Moistening! But on a serious note, towards the end as you ranted about the line, it's true. Remember back in 2019 I was at St. Germans and wanted to catch the London Train to Newquay for track bashing (To cover individual sections of track). But the train was London was overcrowded and was 9 coach GWR IET after Plymouth it was skipping stops and skipped St. Germans and if you were heading to somewhere like Par then it was a bit of a wait for the next train but looking at the times now at St. Germans it so much better but did managed to clear the Newquay Line a few days later after replanning everything and caught a train to Newquay and was chatting to a woman and she was saying that the public transport in Newquay was awful and back them the first train off Newquay was after 10AM! on a weekday, it has improved slightly now as the first train is after 7am. Great video Jen and nice to see Stu as well.

A viaduct and aquaduct in one. That is a smart idea. I know that this is October, but even in the summertime, these lines and trains cannot be fun. So unloved, so uncared for. Perfect demonstration of how to kill a train line and how to make an area depressed. So sad. Come on Cornwall councils, you can do better surely.

Newquay looks like an absolute ghost town. It’s a shame that it’s like this and then they wonder why there is so many people using their cars nowadays…

This was such an eye opener. I always assumed this line would be well looked after because of the through trains in the summer. I can’t believe how much potential is being wasted in terms of public transport provision. Hopefully the metro plan goes ahead.

To say Newquay is such a big tourist hotspot, you would think the station would be a bit nicer. It needs to be adopted. A Community Rail Partnership would help.

The newquay branch line is great & it serves me well travelijng from my home of St Austell to Newquay to visit family, but you're both 100% right, the line is in need of a facelift. Ive said for years it would serve well to have it gping on from St Columb Road durec to St Austell, especially with the falmouth project as. there is an old way which would branch off under the Indian Queens A30 bypass, but would most likely be way over budget to consider.

That is a very depressing station for Newquay. The Looe Valley line is bound to cheer you up, it's my favourite line in Cornwall anyway. Like you I also spent a lot of holidays in Cornwall and I have been on all the railways. You're ahead of me with actually visiting all the stations though :) Watching the series has got me thinking of getting one of those Day Ranger tickets for when I'm over visiting family in Cornwall next year. Thanks for the inspiration!

When I was in Newquay earlier this summer, we got a London train which, I believe, served the intermediate syations to Par (but that might have been because all further trains were cancelled)

I can’t understand why the Par-Newquay service is so bad. There’s a passing loop at Goonbarrow, or thereabouts. So why not have two trains on the branch, especially in high summer. And what happened to XC services to/from Birmingham, Leeds, York and Edinburgh?

Jen, I agree fully on your rant about Newquay, and about the railways in this country generally. Great rant, we love to see it! If I had to add anything, it would be that the likes of this line could be argued to be "luckier" than many, many other railway lines in this country. At least, if you have a dreadful service with dogged rolling stock, at least there's potential for the future! My heart goes out to all of the railways that were closed, demolished, built over and forgotten; there's no escaping that. :(

Great video, enjoying this trip. Stayed in Par and St Austell a few times. As someone who can no longer drive due to health, as beautiful as it is, I couldn't live in Cornwall. The service Wirst provide can be terrible. I've had a single 2-car 150 on a service to Penzance, it was packed at Par, and just got worse as it got closer to Penzance. As for the Newquay branch, the level and frequency of services is awful and certainly wouldn't persuade any motorists to give up their car for the train. The stations were very poor last time I was there. On the summer days when through Paddington to Newquay HST services ran, the intermediate stations between Par and Newquay didn't get served. Really poor. I feel sorry for those that have to use these services. Not a fan of First GWR. When I used their Greenford service from Paddington it was terrible, even during the peak hours, it was just a 2-car 165. Since Crossrail and electrification it has changed, but I feel that's down tto TfL and Network Rail, and little to do with First. First did little to nothing to improve services or capacity up until that point.

First time I've really seen Newquay like that. Yes not an inviting place to alight. We think the same about Yarmouth Vauxhall considering how many summer specials it used to get when it really was Great. Plans are all well and good but how many will get done. Not with this government I fear. In other news.....love the vids, shows the best of places as well as the other bits.

It very much reminds me of me of the Far North Line from Inverness to Wick and Thurso in the North (the real North!), it’s a stunning and beautiful line, but painfully slow on really nackerd poorly maintained class 158 sets on very old bumpy track that is getting more and more overgrown with trackside vegetation (some images recently taken showed a 158 arriving to Thurso station in what looked like an overgrown jungle). It takes over 4 and 1/2 hours to do what the Stagecoach X99 service takes in 2 to 3 hours. Locals simply do not use the train, it’s considered old, bumpy, unreliable and very, very slow and really just for the tourists.

The metro proposal would upgrade the Newquay line to support both an hourly service to Falmouth and an expansion of through services to London and Manchester. It does this with a passing loop (at bugle I believe) to complement the existing passing facility at St Blazey, and an additional platform at Newquay so that the metro stopping service can follow the through services.

Apparently they are making a new loop on the Goss Moor. There is a loop at Goonbarrow (near bugle) already, but that loop is rarely used for passenger service

Definitely don`t sit down on a grassy platform when you are moist, you`ll end up with a gracias! But seriously great to see your trip through Cornwall. I hope they do improv the trains at some point. I still like the old trains with a guard and porters that opened the doors for you and a buffet car... Take care.
