kitty cats! I have to agree the HSTs really show their age, they creak so much! I've heard from depot staff that the actual metal of the mark 3s is literally rotting, so I'm surprised they operated for as many years as they did!

Long ramps are good, as they mean they’re usually less steep which for wheelchair users is great. Not all ramps are wheelchair accessible, which I know sounds odd, but if they’re too steep, it can be dangerous and mean we can’t use them. Borough Green station for example. Their ramp on the London bound platform is so steep that I dislocated my shoulder trying to slowly go down it. Going up would be impossible without help, and I yet I can do pretty steep ramps (east Croydon for example I can do with a suitcase on my back!) so I’m glad I was at least going down it.

Exactly. I used to have this issue when I took my dad out in his wheelchair. Later on he got a mobility scooter, and even in that some of the public down-ramps were unusable for him because he didn't feel stable enough. Then, I have no doubt you have experience of this too, when it's wet the problem only becomes worse with the reduction in grip!

There was a nice friendly cat that I remember at Newton St Cyres but from the last video and this one there are a lot of friendly cats in Devon.... expect for the one at Devonport. Bere Alston is a nice station as well, also has a Barnstaple feel, Great video Jen. Cannot wait to see more from Devon.

Brilliant video Jen, the cats are cute but I'm no so sure the one at Davenport was a very nice cat lol. It would be nice to see the line up to Okehampton from Bere Alston restored as to would mean a diversion route for the Dawlish sea wall stretch of line.

I think historically the record for shortest distance between stations would have been held by Manchester Victoria and Manchester Exchange when it was open, you could walk from one station into the other along the 682m platform, you didnt have to even leave the platform.

I had a look in the Southern Region timetable for 1963. Plymouth to Tavistock North took 35 minutes. Plymouth to Exeter Central, even on the fastest train, took TWO hours. Fifteen minutes spent at Okehampton joining up other parts of the Atlantic Coast Express.

Thank you Jen, once again, for this railway discovery video! (and best wishes for 2024!) I must admit I don't understand what the “token / red stop circle” system means. And it's always lovely to be greeted by the presence of a cat in a railway station. ❤🐈
@DeKat-84
@DeKat-84 5 ай бұрын
It's a very old type of signalling. There is literally a metal disc in the cabinet, that the train driver must obtain and keep with him to be on that section of the line. If the token is missing from the cupboard that means that there is already a train on that section and the driver must not pass the sign with the red circle. These days they would probably have to contact the line controller for assistance if the token was missing, whereas in the past the token would be handed over by another member of staff who would be working at the station. (Back in the days when stations used to be staffed!) I think this is accurate, but anyone who knows better please correct me. There are probably whole videos dedicated to how the system used to work on KZbin if you are interested in train history.

I think the bridge height signs are for the height before the arch starts and the height at the points indicated by the white wood, as the arch changes the height along its arc.

Great video, Jen. There is a plan to increase the number of trains down the Tamar Valley Line to potentially hourly. I think this is dependent on the line being extended back to Tavistock; but the plan would be to reopen a station at Plympton (eastern side of Plymouth - I used to live there!) and then have a sort of “intense” commuter service through all the Plymouth stations and up the TVL. The interesting bit comes at Bere Alston - will they divide trains? Will they have two separate services? The branch to Gunnislake was built as a light railway and its average speed and tightness of curves etc makes the speed very slow. It’ll be interesting to see how it works!

I would suggest on the road to the bridges that 11ft should be on both side of the bridge at that height, additionally for long vehicles going down (up) hill the road could reduce the effective clearence (by more than 3in?)

I love your Janner pronunciation of "St Boodoh" rather than St Byoodoh. Named after St Budoc(k). The church was St Budock's and someone who thought they knew better decided to Frenchify it. Also known as St Buddox. I wonder what the cat's name is?
