@filipsalamon Or at wooden tables beneath olive trees or overlooking the sea or hills...we have many atmospheric options. I don't recall the last time I ate out somewhere with plastic tables and my favourite places certainly aren't posh.

I agree that 1 € on 4 is a big increase, but Croats now treat euros as if they were kunas. I think most sellers simply add a rounded amount - either 50 cents or 1 euro, and local consumers are still not fully conscious of the worth of the euro. As for burek, I think 2.50 is definitely too pricey, considering we're talking about friggin Benkovac. Those are Zagreb prices. Sunscreen you can easily get for much less, at least in chain stores like DM or Spar. Nivea is on the expensive side and I don't see any advantage in it, so I never buy it. There is definitely a lot of greed in Croatia. There wouldn't be as much corruption if there wasn't. And yes, people are short-sighted and self-centered.

the prices of the real estate in the Dalmatia inland are indeed also high, from Zadar to Dubrovnik. Cities like Drnis, Vrlika, Sinj are all high. You can find some cheaper real estate in the surroundings of imotski, but that’s to far of a drive from airports or the sea, practically it’s almost Bosnia. I’m (we are) lucky that my father in law has a house in central Dalmatia and it’s a family house and we always spend our holidays there each summer. Another benefit is we are not in a touristy location and are among the locals. For going out for dinner it’s also cheaper, but prices have gone up. We often go to Bosnia and have a 3 course meal for 3 persons less the €50,-

On one side i like the price hike due to the decrease in lower budget tourists and decrease in mass tourism... on the other hand it makes no sense for local population. It would be interesting to see what or who is buying up property in Croatia. There is a LOT of empty real estate in Croatia.
@bosanskislavonac

You don't know what you talking about . Lower Budget tourists are backbone of Croatian tourism. Tell me who will rent 20 m2 apartment in let's say Makarska or Crikvenica? Rich billionaires? Dont think so. Without standard and low budget tourists there would be a lot of problems for rentiers who invested in this type of properties. Without mass tourism, the whole coastal region, especially Dalmatia is jobless.

Simple economics - the prices went up drastically and still this is going to be a record year for tourism. That's the invisible hand of the market saying - the prices still aren't high enough and people are still finding it worth while to spend their money. Once they stop, they will go somewhere else to spend their money and drive the prices up there. Anyway the prices aren't going down any time soon.

When it comes to real estate, I think there is no justification for price increases. It's ludicrous. Croatia is losing population constantly, and there are nowhere near enough Westerners coming in to compensate for it. Even Zagreb is losing population and prices keep rising nevertheless. I'm afraid big property owners are only becoming bigger and bigger, eating up supply to use as investment, either for reselling or for renting. Laws will have to be passed to control this, otherwise it will end very badly for the common man.
@Timo-qb1gf
@Timo-qb1gf 2 ай бұрын
But who is still paying those high prices? Renting and buying in Zagreb costs nearly the same as in southern Germany, where incomes are more than double and still can't afford anything anymore. Something doesn't add up.

That's just called croatian greed which will go up until infinity. Locals either know which places to avoid and find cheaper substitutes for bars/shops/restaurants/bakeries or completely boycott them. I've saw a british guy pay 23€+tip for three items in a split bar - beer, coffee and an omlet. A lot of croats shat on me in comments saying "but brooo it's split riva". Total buying price of the items is like 5-6€ max (plus you can make like 4 omlets at home) and only way to justify the price would be if the bar/restaurant is situated on a remote island where the items can't get delivered easily. Most of bars and restaurants likely just work during the season, milk tourists dry as much as possible and lean back for rest of the year. Crossing my finger it bites in the ass.

I avoid Split in general, not really my vibe there. too busy, and usually smells on the Riva. Cant believe they are charging people 23 euros for a coffee and an omlette lol.
