Well Max the DUP did understand Brexit what they were hoping for was a hard border in Ireland, the destruction of the GFA and a return to a protestant parliament for a protestant people. Unfortunantly they didn't notice history passed them by.

As an Englishman, I could not agree more. I'd go still further and hope to one day see Scotland, Wales and England, free from the detested Union too. Until all the countries of the British Isles are free and independent, there'll never be harmony, friendship and mutual respect between us. A relationship of equals, rather than lesser parts, ruled by dictat from Westminster. Controlled and manipulated by conflict and separation. Ruled over by a narrow clique in an undemocratic Parliament, dominated by an endless line of Tory governments, interspersed by the odd Labour term. Whose fundamental purpose is to maintain the status quo and further the interests of the few over the many. The super rich over the vast majority of working people.

I'm not an expert on N.Ireland, but from my observations, I can imagine that the DUP were very much in favour of Brexit, because they saw it as a way of re-introducing a 'hard' border onto the island, and reversing the 'soft' re-unification of Ireland. They sucked up to the Tory party, because that is what they perceived they were being promised. If Brexit was at odds with aspects of the Good Friday Agreement, they presumed that Brexit would trump the GFA, rather than vice versa.

He did a favour for Sinn Fein in the recent elections by driving more moderate voters to back them to show how angry they were that DUP intransigence prevented Michelle O'Neill taking her role as First Minister. Worth quoting Sir Edward Carson from almost 100yrs ago. Quite apt today. DUP don't learn : "I believed all this. I thought of the last thirty years, during which I was fighting with others whose friendship and comradeship I hope I will lose from tonight, because I do not value any friendship that is not founded upon confidence and trust. I was in earnest. What a fool I was. I was only a puppet, and so was Ulster, and so was Ireland, in the political game that was to get the Conservative Party into power. And of all the men in my experience that I think are the most loathsome it is those who will sell their friends for the purpose of conciliating their enemies, and, perhaps, still worse, the men who climb up a ladder into power of which even I may have been part of a humble rung, and then, when they have got into power, kick the ladder away without any concern for the pain, or injury, or mischief, or damage that they do to those who have helped them to gain power."

The brexit Paradox is that any govt capable of delivering brexit wouldn't. The brexit reality is that voters clever enough to decode brexit would reject it.

I met Sammy Wilson once when he was Lord Mayor of Belfast on about 1985. In fairness to him, he was nice to us as he had to welcome us a musical group visiting his' city albeit ironically on a tour that was sponsored by the then EEC.

Brexit will lead to Irish reunification. Northern Irish businesses and farmers will soon realise that doing business with the Republic of Ireland and the EU is way less hassle, while being more profitable, so they will soon stop caring about the UK. Good for Ireland as a whole! 🇨🇮☘️

I remember when Boris was fumbling about trying to do brexit and his utter indifference to the huge problems brexit would cause Northern Ireland as the then chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel raised concerns. At this point I saw how a British prime minister cared less about British citizens (because we aren't from England we don't count) than the chancellor of Germany. This uncaring view of British citizens is what brexit has brought and nothing else.

DUP smokescreen, bottom line is no catholic/ nationalist first minister. They think they are more british than the british. Unfortunately mainland UK looks on them as Irish. Brexit in my opinion was english nationalism asserting itself. The DUP misinterpreted it badly and are paying the price.

This truley made me laugh. close your eyes and think about this as a seen in an old, Texas style, coyboy movie. Script: "Sammy boy, let's take a walk, sammy wags his tale, stands up and pants, off they go, down the hill side, behind the old rusty barn, into the distance. Then______________________________ there is a quietness , nothing but the wind. With a surprising mistique, a gun shot resounds, across the hillside. Deafening silence follows. R I P Sammy.
