“Uniting dreams underneath a banner of conquest. I praise your efforts at least. But foolish warriors, have you not learned? Dreams disappear when the dreamer wakes, every last one of them with no exception.” I think I took this quote from Gilgamesh way differently from most people. We know the ONLY two people Gilgamesh genuinely had respect for in Fate/zero was Iskander and Waver. So I wholeheartedly believe he wasn’t shitting on the fact that Iskander and everyone else WAS dreaming. “Dreams and when the dreamer wakes…every one of them with no exception…so, never wake from your blissful dreams.” This is more like how I took it. What he says to Iskander after he defeats him solidified it for me. “Feel free to challenge me again as often as you like, King of Conquers. This entire world is my garden to the very end of time. Thus I guarantee you this, it will never bore you. It will always be entertaining.” Come and dream in my garden of treasures as often as you like King of conquerors. For since it is mine I promise you it will never leave you wanting. People always say how insane Gilgamesh is because of his stunt in UBW but I disagree. Gilgamesh loves humanity and though his respect is hard to come by once you have it your more than welcome to partake in what he perceives as his treasures. He IS the law, a law much above humanity’s own mundane laws and morality. So what he does is what he always believes is right by his law as humanity’s overseer and his own entertainment. And I’m not going to lie that’s what I love so much about him!

Damn nice analysis on it the way you took it is really interesting and sounds like something he would do/mean

Ghilgamesh is the hedonism itself, where Iskandar is the greed itself. Now greed is neither good, n'or bad. I think You are correct with your analysis, and the reason for the respect that Iskandar and his master receive it, it's because they are not trying to be someone else, for any kind of sake. They are exactly who they are pretend to be. Think about how hard is to find people who are exactly what they are pretend to be ... Maybe they will opose You, maybe your perspective is entierly different, but when you step up towards an ocean of people who don't know who they are, what are driving them, and don't know how to explain their choices of act's, You are going to respect the ones that are the same breed like You. And Ghilgamesh is exactly what he is saying he is, same Iskandar&Waiver, but we cannot say the same about the other characters.

you can even take this further, he is very prideful and believes to be better than everyone cause with his noble phantasms it near impossible for any one spirit or human to beat him in combat but if you do by some chance gain a victory he will admit it like he did with shirou, he said "Victory is yours but it won't save your life." although he never respected shirou he still understood and accepted that shirou had bested him.

It was so interesting, the first times we saw Gilgamesh, was the version of himself before Enkidu. But in Grand Order, we saw the Gilgamesh who came about after meeting and losing Enkidu. Two very different people

Urobuchi writes excellent plot antagonists. Shogo Makishima and Gilgamesh stand out as being transcendent in their existence. Telling is their lack of shock at the key plot twist. It may not be something they knew, but the entire thing is beneath them. Gilgamesh may appear to be conceited - arrogant, with his insistence that the holy grail is worthless as it is not within his vaults... and is ultimately vindicated as being wise to be suspicious of it. When there was a D&D alignment chart including fate/zero characters, it had Gilgamesh placed as chaotic good. I disagreed. His alignment is lawful law. The law he represents is one that goes above human constructs of civil law and represents something closer to a concept of cosmic law or divine providence. Shogo Makishima embodies something similar, if a bit more mundane. However, I found it "the most powerful thing unspoken" when Makishima casually replies to the revelation of the sibil system with a recounting of Gulliver's Travels, Balinibarbi. It's transcendent in a different manner - rather than divine providence, it is an echo of human wisdom against foolishness... how a satire hundreds of years old reveals the common absurdities that emerge in society, and the logic behind those swept up in them. Makishima is not just handling the revelation with a bored sigh, he points out this new technological horror is nothing truly new and is the same failed idea with a new toy. For people caught up within the novelties of the moment, like mayflies, the thinking and objectives of Makishima are on a completely different paradigm.

why you would choose to bless this video with such an excellent little essay is beyond me - many thanks, kind stranger. if I may - the law that Gilgamesh represents may also be analogous to the law that governs Fate;Zero as a story; a law of a higher realm, but a much crueler, less forgiving one, albeit towards the end of the story one that acknowledges a little bit of light in this dark world.

Gilgamesh was placed as Chaotic Good because he is ultimately someone that, as his Archer self, prioritizes himself and fulfilling his own interests(by just about any means necessary) over pretty much all else. His own interests just happen to include making sure his garden(Earth) isn't destroyed. Therefore, Chaotic Good. Of course, that's just Zero/SN Gil, who was summoned into an era he outright admits almost as soon as we meet him that he hates, and after traveling for 10 years, has grown to find completely irredeemable and hopeless. Other versions of him, like the EXTRA CCC version are still selfish, arrogant, "Chaotic Good" individuals, but are much calmer and mellowed about it. Gil is more or less shaped by the era he's summoned into and the people he sees within them are ultimately what shapes just how far into the "chaotic" side of the spectrum he goes.

wait, the list of alienation and attributes of DD are always applied according to the interests and benefits to humanity but also to the human ego. Death helps the planet to renew itself, but it does not help the individual human ego, which is why Ereshkigal is evil despite that she is a cute cinnamon roll. The same happens with characters who "forget" their humanity to reach the pinnacle of something like Tesla with science or the martial artist Li Shuwen who are of the evil category. If Gilgamesh's law is similar to Makishima's then it cannot be classified as lawfull but chaotic, since it obeys different principles to which humans are governed. Added to that is the hedonistic theory that Gil follows because it is understood that he follows his own rule, which goes against the law of regular men (like Mordred), therefore it is chaotic.
