Helping others is a thankless action. It may never be acknowledged by others. But it can have lasting effects. Like lighting a fire for for a stranger in a cold night. The stranger may not have asked for it, but they may be thankful for this action. The stranger can share this with someone else, and then shared with another. This new warmth may spread, affecting more, and more people. Reaching out farther than ever conceived. The person who started the fire my never be remembered, but their actions can live forever. But the fire must be tended to. If left alone, the heat will wither, and die, and we all return to a cold world. It is not wrong to help a person, but know that it comes with a risk. I think what archer critiques here is very important. 1) this shows us that the main theme of FSN (“conquering oneself”) is heavily related to free will and determinism. This is why archer brings up the idea of borrowed ideals, and warns Shirou that his ideals must be his own. 2) contrary to what most of the people here think, I do not believe archer is critiquing idealism at all. He said “if you fight for an ideal, you can only save ideals”, this hardly sounds like he dislikes ideals, infact it more so shows us the consequence of following an ideal without elements of realism. Looking back on it, I don’t think Shirou is fighting for anyone else, he’s fighting for his ideals, he’s not fighting for the people. Yes, his ideal is to help others, but that’s the thing, his motivation doesn’t properly align to helping others. He cares more about the ideal itself than the actual part about “helping others”. 3) point 2) is also important because it opens the gateway thematically to heavens feel (whose main theme is “the friction between the real and ideal”). The element of realism comes into play in this route, Shirou abandons the idea of fighting for an ideal, he chooses to fight for Sakura matou, in HF what archer says here resolves the issue, Shirou fought for Sakura, so he saved Sakura. Archer said if you fight for an ideal, you will only save ideals. Shirou resolves this as previously stated. 4) salivation through the hands of another is never true, this is supported from archers similie/analogy to currency. He tell us, it gets passed down from one person and then given to the next. I think archer shows us what this idea of tradition entails. And I believe he’s saying it entails in the rejection of free will and rationality. Some form of cultural or social determinism. Showing us the determinism alongside of free will is directly related to Fate Stay Nights main theme of conquering oneself. 5) archers whole dialogue points to a conclusion. This conclusion he tells us in one word. MEANINGLESSNESS. The ultimate form of nihilism. If you’re fighting for an ideal, and only for that ideal, and not for what that ideal ACTUALLY is (meaning you will only save ideals), and if you have no free will to choose to opt out of this ideal, and disregarding the realism behind this ideal, then it points to the word MEANINGLESS. Archer’s whole dialogue showed us what properties and conditions were needed for something or specifically an ideal to be MEANINGLESS. That’s why when Shirou saves Sakura in heavens feel, it’s meaningful, because Shirou made the choice between the ideal and real, showing us that he developed free Will from his cultural determinism, Shirou saves Sakura, he saves specifically her, not the ideal itself, Shirou broke the chain of tradition that he inherited from kiritsugu emiya, meaning his choices were not deterministic in HF, and under Archer’s worldview, heavens feel Shirou and his ending are MEANINGFUL.

Emiya takes "suicide" to a whole other level. I mean, if you're always saving others at the cost of yourself, then you might as well save no one. Throwing your life away won't get anyone anywhere. You can't save everyone, that's just not feasible. You need something more tangible to fight for, rather than just a bunch of nameless faces. One must need a reason to do something in order to actually do so. Emiya's doing what he is solely because he can. Because he's supposedly the only one who can. That's not healthy.

The context here is, that he's speaking about the flaws of his past self. Archer and Shirou are a twist on the hero cliche. They are TOO selfless. That's why he says don't help people, don't fight for causes, especially if it's because someone else wanted to realise that cause and not yourself. Because he doesn't know his limits and destroyed himself doing that. So this quote needs to be taken with context not at face value. If anything, irl this relates to getting burned out. The lesson we can draw is DO NOT take on the world's problems alone. Heck, don't take all the problems at once either. People generally focus on causes they know about and care about. To care for everything and fight for everything would quickly be overwhelming and fail to achieve anything.

@nawalpandey7183 жыл бұрын
Still he has not any solid ideal even in the end. He still doesn't know how to protect this world. And yeah he fights for his ideal. But People are wrong that he didn't love humanity. This is the thing which attracted him not kiritsugu's smile. It is the thing which forces him try to define everyone and try to make them happy. This is the true reason behind his ideal which he understands in end. He also said in the fight with Archer that at first it is admiration but it is actually the try to save undone this hell and destroy his hollowness by essence of humanity. it is true that he make path to follow and try to really save everyone without discarding anyone. But the point is he will never get true success in his path. But this journey is representation of his true self and this self itself is enough for his success because it creates hope for ideal world and this hope is enough for human beings to try endlessly to reach the horizon of humankind. You would find that his resolution is interesting to listen but actually is it even possible in reality? Because the reality of world is quite nihilistic. The end of world is inevitable. People cannot save everyone and they can't even save themselves in the end. Objectively, there is no god and bad also. And even a good ideal for some people can be considered as evil for others. It means human should live their even it needs to sacrifice other and they don't accept anything as a result. They shouldn't love or hate others. But their is a problem. Even though it is logically true but is it true that there no evil or good. Actually Shirou's realisation in the end is definitely a try to change this world. But the reality is that his realisation actually change himself in the end. His way of living life is optimistic or more correctly optimistic nihilism. He know that even his way of saving has huge chance of failure. It is also possible that he could also be ended as evil for others. But his dream of hope is itself enough to elevate himself as a human to change this world. Just like you said good and evil can't be destroyed because it creates balance in the world. But just the hope of true equality and justice. The hope of guiding humans in their respective path is itself beautiful. This beauty can elevate every human to live his life in this world and try to find his own meaning in this world and way of living. So this hope, try if ideal world and enough knowledge of consequences really help every human to actually save themselves and world. One statement perfectly fit in his situation i.e “I don't know if it was correct or not. Nobody will be able to determine that. The beautiful things are ugly and ugly things are beautiful. There is nothing disgusting, once you look at it objectively. So why is there such a deviation in world? Sophistry, falsehood, trickery and vanity.” It is of course shirou's own statement. He question this exact question when he get the memory of Archer and asked himself that why he felt this deviation if he thinks good and bad is actually not existed. Why he regretted for this? And why he even follows it in the end? It can also be explained with Angra Mainyu ending in hollow ataraxia where because of shirou's influence, he remembers his resolution as human after prayed as demon. He understands that humans are ugly but this also make them beautiful because they can find beauty even in ugliness of the world. He understands this feature of human being make world as a whole much more beautiful. The hope of creating a world where no one can be harmed is a beautiful thought and this things actually is the reason which drives human to live their life and create curiosity to understand themselves much more better to improve themselves which is actually impossible. In the end, this optimistic view actually make this world much more better place. Everyone has different way to reach the true happiness according to them but objectives are always same for every human being. That's why effort to make this world better is not fruitless and actually this effort to change many lives. Atleast this path can create a world without meaningless bloodshed. I mean if they had a hope like this and believe like this. They atleast try to achieve their goal in better way. It definitely didn't change the factor of sacrifices but it is much more manageable. And this hope can create a beautiful world where people atleast try to understand each other. In the end, we have to sacrifice someone. But this type of hope,desire and satisfaction with only the journey of this ideal is enough to create caring and love nature toward each other. We would sacrifice someone but we cherish for their sacrifice and try to save others because of it. In this world atleast, everything which is important as a human being to elevate in higher heights with more comfort in our life as whole is only possible because of this nature to care each other and co-operation along with our own selfishness. That's why as a human we should spread this motto of cooperation and better world by destroying hate in world to live a successful life. That's what I want to say that hope is the thing which is the reason why human is able to strive in this world. Hope elevate us from a mere animals. Sacrifices are needed to save others. You had to sacrifice someone to save others. We can't change it but we can atleast try to save everyone. We have to spread humanity, save others and guide others to have hope to create a paradise but also accept sacrifices. Without humanity no one can create a better world. I mean without understanding others and without changing everyone. You can't create a better world. Changing in a right path to someone can't be succeeded. Because nothing is right in this world. Something is right for someone are not right for others. But we can try or hope to change world with humanity, saving others or guiding others go understand the shared emotion or nature of every human or in this case every beings. Everyone has different way to reach their path and they are conflicting also. But this hope or try of better world can find path through these all conflicting ideals but it always needed humanity. But in the end, we can't save everyone but we can enjoy this world. We can even enjoy or find beauty even ugliness of humanity. Note:- humanity means our tendency to make a community or save or understand each other. I call it humanity because human are different to animals because of these features. And human are existed because of these features. They created their own loved ones or community or country because of these features.

Archer is the future self of Shirou Emiya. Archer's words here are a criticism of his flaws. Shirou is a twist on the heroic cliche. Heroism but as a mental illness. After being saved from a magical disaster, he gets survivor's guilt. He feels the need to help people to validate his own worth, saving himself through saving others(hence "salvation is like currency"). First of all by taking on his late father's(also his saviour) ideal of being a hero that saves everyone. A hero to create a world where no one suffers. As a result, Shirou is selfless to a literal fault. He has no regard for his own well being, only of others. He sacrifices and sacrifices until he sells his soul to eternal service and regrets it for eternity. That's why Archer speaks against helping others. That's why he stresses the importance of fighting for your own interests and your own beliefs. In any other person and character, these traits are admirable. But in Archer and Shirou, they are a sickness. An obsession that has and will destroy them.
@saudel01 Жыл бұрын
Archer doesn't speak out against helping others. He speaks out against tow main things: (1) pursuing a borrowed ideal and (2) pursuing an ideal so blindly that you fail to look at reality. His own pursuit of a borrowed ideal ended up with him being betrayed by the ideal itself. He doesn't mind that one of the people he saved was responsible for his death, he minds that the only way he can save people is by damning/killing other people (i.e. on a cosmic level his ideal of saving everyone is turned into a mathematical equation of sacrificing the few to serve the many, which runs counter to his dream of saving everyone). This makes him feel like his life wasn't worth anything. This is why he is against the single minded pursuit of an ideal, as in the end you will be left with nothing but an ideal you can never reach.
@kpetalis Жыл бұрын
@@saudel01 Pretty much this. But allow me to add that his criticism is not even on the ideal, but on the fact that Shirou is suicidal. The fact that he borrowed the ideal of saving everyone is not wrong per say. It is the fact that Shirou is a broken man that holds no value to to himself or even others. He is not concerned about saving people and their livelihood. He is only concerned with the fact that they are alive. He never stopped to listen to the people he supposedly saved or helped them to live their lives and survive after saving them. He never considered why a fight broke out and what is the best way to stop it. He never considered the historical records and the political climate of the places he went into to help stop the war or skirmish or whatever. The only thing in his mind was to stop the fighting, and that led to worse fighting because he never knew what he was supposed to save in the first place. And that led to the killing the few to save the many. Even if those remaining weren't the good people or those in the right. He became a machine pursuing a goal he knew not how to achieve, never mind the fact that the goal itself was an unattainable ideal. The ideal worked for Kiritsugu because as a person Kiritsugu was complete. He had a hard life and he was pursuing an unattainable goal, but he was keenly aware of that. He knew it was impossible to save everyone but he chose to pursuit that ideal never the less. The thing though was, that Kiritsugu understood the people around him. He studied the area he was going to fight into, he studied the history, politics and traditions of the area and he chose which side he would help. His way of fighting and his way of trying to help always bear fruit, even though it was never bloodless and never the ideal solution he wanted. Despite that, Kiritsugu knew what he was doing and he did so fully expecting to fail, hence the pursuit of the Grail. The consequences of his actions were his own to bear as he made a conscious choice to pursuit that ideal. Had he decided to stay with his family and stop fighting, that too would not have been out of character for him as he knew what he was chasing and he knew that he had already made the best he could for his ideal. That is not a choice Shirou is capable of making because the ideal is his "raison d'etre". The pursuit of it is the goal itself, he is not concerned for the people, but with the math. If even one person is killed, even if there was nothing he could to save them, then that is a failure. And so, if that is the case, then he will kill those he can't save so that their deaths won't be counted as casualties, but as targets for extermination. That is the solution to the problem and the reason he is criticizing and saying to himself that he "never knew what to save".

Puts the whole hero ideal into perspective. If you strive to save everyone, yet lack the power to ACTUALLY save EVERYONE, then what happens to those who you can't save? What happens to those who desperately wished to be saved, yet you could not reach them. Even if you are the most powerful being alive, you're only one person. And that will never be enough to save everyone.
@Yusa_Beach2 жыл бұрын
I'd rather live with the guilt with not being able to save them when I wanted to, rather than not have it at all. You may not save everyone, but the main intention and the importance of it is that at least you tried. There could have been others who never even thought about trying.
@anxiousearth6802 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Everything Archer says to Shirou is based on his keen knowledge of the flaws of that version of himself. So the reason Archer derides the concept of ideals, fighting for a cause and helping others, is because he, and eventually Shirou, took it too far. Shirou Emiya is a person who is selfless to a literal fault. He doesn't know his limits. He brings suffering to himself with what he's willing sacrifice to help people. Until finally he sells his soul to eternal service. And yet, the only person he blames and seeks vengeance against is himself. In short, it's not a commentary about the world, but himself specifically. Because he only says that to himself. And only he would go so far and ruin himself.

Transcribed the speech for personal use, feel free to use it. "I fight for myself alone, there's no other reason to fight. If your main desire is to never hurt anyone then by all means do as you wish, it's up to you... But be careful! Be certain that it's your wish, and not anyone else's. Know that if you fight of your own free will, any resulting sins and punishments will be of your own making. Bearing it comes with that decision. However, if that desire was borrowed from another person, the ideals you claim are nothing more than fantasy. There must be a reason for fighting, but that reason must never be an ideal. If you fight for ideals, then you will only be able to save ideals. That's all... You won't be able to save anyone. A desire to save something or someone stand out as a reason to fight, or at least it does for you... right Emiya? Salvation at the hand of another is never true. Such salvation is like currency, when used it passes on to another. It's indeed true that your wish to save others can probably be achieved. But in doing so, you must give up all hope of saving yourself, you shall cling to ideals not your own, and you will pursue them until it destroys you in the end. And that is why these ideals you hold so dear, are meaningless. Nothing ever comes of helping others, because in the end, you can save neither others, nor yourself. That life is an illusion."

you missunderstood Archer. Saving others because you whole heartedly want to is no illusion. But saving someone because someone else told you to do so because its the right thing to do is. And such half hearted attempts to save someone always ends in either failure or own suffering. Because in our wretched world those saved are often ungrateful. Its that moment you notice the diffrence if you helped out of a meaningless ideal or out of your heart. if its done out of an ideal ungratefulness will hurt. You will question your believes and realize that it was an illusion to think saveing that one was a good thing. But if you saved someone because in your heart it felt right, than it doesnt matter to you, if the saved one is ungrateful. All that matterd to you is that you saved someone.

It is not that emiya has become cruel it just that he had seen reality he had live in the reality he had tried to save others he had simply live life he is not a teenager he had seen reality of the world how saving one means not saving others let take an example according to what shirou ideal is he had to save everyone for example a man is raping a girl that means that shirou not only have to save the girl but he has to save the man as well if he saves the man then that means girl has to be raped and if he saves the girl then the man has to be arrested or killed that means no matter how hard you try you can never save everyone and emiya has seen this reality even if shirou claims that he will never regret what he will done but he has to take responsibility for his action he is nothing but a highschool student right now that why he believes in fantasy just when he will go out into the the world he will realise how much emiya was right in my opinion both of them are broken but archer is more realistic and shirou is more deliousnal but in the end anime itself is wishfullfilment story so what can I say in the end archer will always be my faviourate character

Dreams sought after by children are vastly different than the reality that adults trudge through. Being saved by another might be a dream we wish to have one day, but if we cling to said dream and become drunk on it, we will no longer be able to wake up in time to save ourselves from the fangs of our own dreams and ideals

I see what the writer was trying to convey, but they highly contradicted the character's words here a few times. An ideal is a perfected concept. So if one fights for a perfected concept, he or she can only ever save a perfected concept? This wouldnt work. Even the character says he fights for himself in the beginning. That would also be an ideal to tho who regard it as such and he's not the only one to believe in such an ideal. So who is truly pursuing something meaningless now.... Moreover if one takes an ideal and embeds that to him or herself, it now becomes a part of them as theirs and not just someone elses. Finally an illusion misleads reality. In the end everyone dies and no one lives forever. Saving others as well as yourself as long as one lives or even can is a part of reality. Past present and future. Not an illusion unless one believes its for eternity.

If one fights for an ideal, one can only save ideals. The implication is that ideals are not necessarily grounded in reality. So pursuing it still, only preserves a false belief without achieving a favourable result.
