You ate the breadfruit skin!?! Jeanelle no! 🙈 I'm from the Caribbean - St Vincent to be exact - and breadfruit is part of our national dish 😋 You need to try over ripe breadfruit roasted. We roast breadfruit on a coalpit for about 20mins give or take. Peel, clean, slice then serve w/ stewed saltfish or saltfish buljol. We also eat the breadfruit and saltfish with sweet potatoes, eddoes, cassava, green banana and plain dumplings. Yes starch on starch on starch

What is wrong with eating the skin? Asking from one of the potato & apple countries, where some people say it's fine to eat boiled / roasted / baked potatoes with the skin on, others religiously peel it. Same for apples. Or fresh tomatoes, some blanch them and say when you don't, then tomato skin will glue itself to your stomach and upset it, and you'll get stomach pains. If Jeanelle ate the skin, it must be also question of preference / tradition, to eat it with skin or without, right?

I mean, we get some of the very exotic (more exotic than yellow bananas, mangoes or avocados), fruits & vegs here (cassava, green banana, lychee, custard apple / cherimoya, taro, okra), but if, then like once a year, and very, very exotic things like durian, breadfruit or jackfruit I see only on youtube. 😂

In Puerto Rico, we call it Pana(since Pan means Bread) and my favorite way to eat it as Tostónes (where you chop it up, flatten the pieces and fry them in oil, then add salt and mayoketchup) or as a Mofongo (which is a similar process but you don’t flatten them and instead of frying it until it’s crispy, you fry it like halfway and then mash the pieces together with garlic and butter) In both of those dishes, the breadfruit is technically replacing what is usually plantain, but while plantain in these foods tastes savory, breadfruit has a mild sweetness and softer texture. I like both fruit.

If you going to boil the breadfruit, you should remove the peel and the core before eating it. It also pairs well with butter, gravy, barbecue or fried meat. People also peel it and removed the core before cutting it into small chunks and adding it to stews or soups. Here in the Caribbean, we do enjoy roasted breadfruit with salt fish (usally salted cod fish) stew or stir-fry.

Being multi-cultured, both sides traditionally eat Breadfruit cooked, usually boiled. In my Chamorro side, it’s most commonly served steamed and sliced with a thickened coconut milk sauce. In my Chuukese side, Breadfruit is boiled and pounded into a doughy ball with coconut milk too. Both dishes are usually eaten during parties or every day meals and it’s most commonly paired with barbecued meats or sashimi! And yes, fresh breadfruit drips a sticky white sap once cut which is why my family usually peels it onto old newspapers to not make the tabletop sticky. We don’t usually eat the skin of the breadfruit but watching this, I suppose it’s edible. 😂 For beginners, I totally recommend it with coconut milk!!

In Samoan culture, we peel it with a cut end of a can called an ‘asi’, and then we either boil it until it’s ready to eat on its own or add coconut milk, or we bake it in a process called the ‘umu’ which is covered in layers of banana leaves and ocean rocks. Earth oven if you may.

Here in Indonesia, it's called "sukun". I really love the ripe one when the fruit has a sweet flavour, and my favorite is when this ripe goodness deep fried with thin salty flour cover it. Mmm, drolling~

I just tried it while in Hawaii. I let it ripen, blended it raw, and fried it in olive oil. It was very good we ate it with guava syrup and it reminded me of fried plantains.
