Have you ever wanted to know what the inside of a bilge pump looks like?

We all use these bilge pumps for various tasks, but I never knew how they were put together. It's interesting how well a single rubber seal can keep the motor canister dry over as many years as it does.
My mind just loves taking things apart, and sometimes, putting them back together again. I am dreaming up projects that can be done in a much smaller workshop once I arrive in Australia, and this is the very first step in what will likely be a long drawn out process of designing an electric dredge that really sucks! (We're like a year away from that I think)
I'm interested in the Bamboo Labs P1S 3d Printer as my introduction to 3D printing in Australia Anyone out there have any tips or opinions on these things?
Also, I cant stop thinking about swapping a brushless motor into this thing...
Cheers!

There's a guy who makes an sells an electric 3 D printed dredge in California. Yes, you could design one yourself, it would be fun to see what you can come up with. Cheers! 🍻 ✌️🇺🇸

FMD - why don't you sandpaper your knob ? - it would be fun to see how much pain you can bear.

@cjsoutdoors4412 I would love to give it a try! I have some ideas that would be cool to experiment with...

It would be interesting to know if its possible to mount a "fabricated pressure pump" to the top of your highbanker to serve as a 2" dredge. I think a 3" would draw the watts down to quick.

Yeah, I think anything electric should start at 2" until you can get some solid data on power usage. Would need some pretty spectacular battery capacity to run a larger machine with electricity...

I bought a small aquarium pump recently, and was kind of wondering how they work. Thank you for the video. I was curious if it’s ok to use them on their side? (I did) because it was the only way to get the kink out of the hose.

Did the crack go all the way through the housing? Or was it a surface scratch?
@UtmostOutdoors

The crack did go all the way through the housing, but the crack was just bellow the O ring so the pump motor would have stayed dry inside.

Just a side thought... but you could probably utilize Temu for cheap parts/motors/batteries/whatever to experiment with.

I had the same idea some time ago...... It's definitely doable. Changing the dimensions of the impeller will produce higher pressure with smaller volume for the same power consumption. But the real problem is how much material realistically you can move with such small dredge? And is it worth the effort to lug all this heavy and expensive equipment with battery and hoses, if you can move the same amount of material with simple hand pump/dredge that weighs less than 1kg?

I've noticed with the Chinese Submersible Pumps which are the 'metal can' design they should be filled with oil but they aren't. If you get any leaks past the main gasket your pump will croak. The best thing to do with these pumps is disassemble the housing and expose the main seal. The holes in the housing for the nuts and bolts are probably not drilled but were punched. Hammer the surfaces flat and remove any burrs. Lubricate the main seal well and reassemble the pump. You could consider filling the pump with thin oil. Not sure what type. This all makes the pumps usable and still cheap.

I mostly knew what they looked like already. Was really interesting to see what the insides and mounting looks like in real life and not just the parts you have to clean out and diagrams 👍
