This is one of my all time favorite Rolling Stones songs. It was one of the first songs I latched on to when I started listen to them at 16 (circa 1994-1995 right after my dad and I caught the Voodoo Lounge concert in Pittsburgh). Why is it not more known? It's always on the band's hits collections from the 1960's (Hot Rocks, London Years, Forty Licks, etc) but it's the one song from those collections that's never on the radio. I don't believe I'd have ever heard it if I wasn't actively collecting Rolling Stones music.

@@frankfarago2825 Thanks for sharing. Seen the stones many times but never with Brian. Dig em all, but Brian to me is the Stones. Sure Keith is the core, but Keith (whether he will admit it or not) is Brian two point oh. “2.0”. Brian was the true reckless rock n roller early on and his swagger and attitude carried the band at that time. He was the only lover of the blues at the start. Keith and mick were rock n rollers. Brian and Keith created the magic of the stones and that was it’s two guitar weaving and on all those early records, thy are constantly switching from lead to rhythm parts. Personally, I think Keith and Anita’s drug hell from 69 onwards was fueled largely in part by guilt over Brian.

No one was talking about abortion in 1966! Mick Jagger throws the subject in the listener's face while the song's lyrics remain ambiguous and contemporary for the time. The absolute KILLER music throws the listener in a whirlwind of a tailspin, capturing the confusion and radical changes going on during that time.

Always liked this song. Like anybody else, Ray Davies, Lennon/ McCartney, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, the Stones had their eye on society and experimentation. Brian Jones could play any instrument and the sounds they were all getting changed the course of music in 1966, all promising of what was to come in the next few years. HYSYMB probably wasn't a danceable single but so what? The Stones held their own. Psychedelia may have been trendy to the media, but whomever the creator, rock music was really art at the time. Imho, probably the most inspired time in rock history still.

Keith wrote this song by himself beginning with piano. Then he moved on to the guitar tracks. I read a long time ago how he came up with the guitar tones. I can't specifically remember . I find it unbelievable that I can't find a decent single article on the studio sessions and specific track details other than Andrew Loog Oldman produced it and came up with the horn tracks. Not to mention the songs lyrics are ambiguously about the taboo subject (during that time) Abortion! To me, this song is one of the most unique, powerful and dynamic songs ever written, even to this date. I would love it if a booklet were written on every detail of song's production and recording session details. If anyone knows where I can find more details about this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW

The basic track was recorded at RCA Studio in Hollywood, California in August 1966 while recording what would become the Between The Buttons album. The trumpets were added into the song in England several weeks later by arranger Mike Leander, who put the strings on both Marianne Faithfull and the Stones version of "As Tears Go By". The horns were the idea of Stones record producer Andrew Loog Oldham's after hearing Ike & Tina Turner's then hit "River Deep, Mountain High". According to an interview Keith Richards did in New Musical Express upon the songs release in late September 1966, he states that different brass instruments were tried but they "all dragged except for the trumpets".

Two promos of this song from 1966 still exist . There is also the colour Ed Sullivan version. Why don't ABKCO and the Stones get together and release the Stones 60s promos and TV appearances before most of their first generation of fans are dead? I have loved the Stones since 64, and I would like to see all the footage I remember from the 60s glory years get an official release. The fact that a band of their stature and importance still doesn't have a definitive DVD retrospective is scandalous. God bless Brian, Stu and Nicky.

I'd love to remix this (if there even were isolated multitracks of it, in the first place - that came later in the '60s). I find it's cluttered and brash. I think Phil Spector was starting to influence everyone around this time, but not always in a good way. There's way too much jangle & klang competing with the lead vocal. I bet it could've been a bigger hit if it wasn't so hard on the ears.
