He's changed ends, and probably due to the fact it's a running line on one side and vegitation on the other he's opted to go through the engine room. Shutting it down whilst changing ends makes it a bit kinder on the ears

Yes, that makes sense. Thanks for your comment.

Probably weren't given ear defenders back then, I remember them being issued. As for not walking along the trunking & the vegetation by the cess, I walked along some near Romsey and those brambles are vicious.

How much room is there in the middle of the engine of a 56?

@@jasonl4411.A sideways walk would get you through..

@@jasonl4411. There's a slim corridor running the length of the engine bay. Only just wide enough to walk through IF you're not of the 'portly' type !

Gotta make sure to restart the engine every now and then so the new drivers install correctly ;)

We had this 56 at Gateshead and it became one of the most unreliable locos about . “Blyth power” it was named .

1991. Back in the days when Britain's railways were a simplified, unified network - like so many abroad; particularly in Europe - and didn't pander to a gullible Electorate; or competing political parties; or competing commercial Contractors all vying for a slice of the cake. National infrastructures and networks like roads, railways, water, gas and electricity should always be run for a country's national population - and not just for private greed and profit - even if it does look 'good' on the surface. 'Competition' is supposed to drive down prices and simplify and improve matters for customers and 'consumers'. A great shame it doesn't always 'deliver' that way !

I was oin a failed 450 EMU outside Farnham.... the announcement came from the driver after a few minutes, "I have been advised to shut it down and restart it!" much to the amusement of the passengers, imagining a ctrl alt del situation!

Did that fix it?!

I think it may have been a dog in the background! The area is amongst houses so maybe dogs in gardens nearby.

@@JimH24 I see.. I was not sure and thought it may be a sticking flywheel on the starter motor.
