Interesting that you called it a "Honkey Tonk Town", as my father, Gary A. Wilson, wrote a book about Havre with that title. He was also very involved in helping restore and promote Fort Assiniboine toward the end of his life. He was very fascinated by the prohibition area in Havre, and outlaws of the "wild west" and wrote a several other books about them.

my father must have grown up in a town like that, when explaining to me how easy I had it growing up, he had to walk through 3 foot of snow, walking to and from school uphill both ways!

I tell my kids that the hardest time I had walking to school was in Manchester, NH at minus 40F. I remember getting bundled up for that one! 1960-61, that was a brutal winter for the east coast.

My mother was born there and my cousin Jim was a friend of Frank Derosa. My uncle Julis was a call boy for the Great Northern for 35 years never missed a day of work and he was paralyzed on his right side by bike even in the snow.

I may be remembering wrong, but I believe just west of town on the south side of the highway, there is a shop that sells odds and ends. Outside the shop is a mounted black bear standing. When you get too close to it, it will squirt water on you like it is peeing.

I've heard of underground Havre but didn't know exhibits were set up and tours were given. Only been to Havre once and that was 50 years ago, so Thanks, Rick and Linda for the tour. Buffalo soldiers were stationed in my neck of the woods at Fort Custer at one time.

This was so interesting - beginning to end. If you like to read, "The Land of the Burnt Thigh" by Edith Eudora Kohl is a true story of two sisters that had a newspaper, post office and store. I hadn't made the connection as to why there is a courthouse, newspaper, and land office in every town. If I remember from the book correctly, you had to have the land deed printed in the paper and then you had to stay a year and prove-up. This book is chock-full of history, characters, hardships, immigrants, native Americans and how the community pulled together with great humor, integrity and sincere care of one another. I think you'll like this book as much as I like your channel.

I believe that there is another buffalo jump on highway 2 between Kalispell and Polson around Flathead lake. It's interesting because if you look at it just right, you can see a carving of an Indian maiden. I believe the lore is her love went over the jump with the bison. Don't quote me on that tho please. My mom told me that story and she could've been wrong lol. But you can see the carving. There is also a museum in Polson that's pretty cool....miracle of America museum. Lots of cool things to see in NW Montana! Hope you enjoyed your visit to my home state....

We met Dan and Theresa down near Laramie, WY back when our transmission failed and we had to repair it in the campground. They kept us company and provided assistance while we did that. They also had the first ebikes that i ever saw. They're very nice.

The city of Havre was founded when James Hill brought the railroad through the area from his home state of Minnesota. Havre has been a railroad town it was the Great Northern Railway at that time. Burlington took over the line in 1970. Burlington Northern Railroad was the product of the merger of three major railroads: the Great Northern Railway (GN), the Northern Pacific Railway (NP) My railcar was purchased by the (NP) Northern Pacific railroad in 1969 , and was delivred November 18th 1969 to Livingston Montana. Then March 1st 1970 Burlington merged with the Great Northern and Northern Pacific becoming Burlington Northern. BN railroad bacame hungry for more taking over the compitition. Next in line to be devoured was the Santa Fe railroad. So now we have BNSF Railroad. Good video, always fun watching your History videos, you and Linda make it so intresting. Oh I might mention I passed my federal railroad exam and rejoind NARCOA and PRO, I should, I hope to be riding the rails this year. The Havre underground sounds very similar to the Pendleton, OR underground. The Chinese had “sundown laws” - they weren’t allowed to be on the streets after sundown. They lived and conducted business underground.

Wow! What a fun tour! I knew Butte had tunnels and an underground, but I didn’t know that about Havre. I’ve traveled US-2. I think the US highways go through the more colorful towns and backcountry. Next time I’m up toward Havre, I’ll take a little more time.

A friend of mine and my buddy got a a job outside of havre on 60000 Sq acre ranch . So we helped him move. Got there day early the door was unlocked so spent night on the floor. Woke up next morning to the biggest ashole owner I ever met. Needless to say we left back to Arkansas that day.

Well this is an awesome town with so much awesome history. Had no idea about the underground stuff. We drove right through here! I hate that we didn't know about the underground thing. It was The Great Northern Railway, not Burlington Northern. It was the furthest north railroad and that's why it was called the highline, not because it rose to the mountains.
