I grew up dealing with the word Haole, it was an interesting experience when I moved to Maryland, in a county where African Americans made up the majority of the population. He's right about how most people with treat you as local as soon as you start speaking. LOL he is also right about getting into scraps, I remember quite a few until I shot up like a been stalk. I remember my mom (who was military) getting bad service where ever she would go, to the point where I would do all the talking at restaurant, shops, etc. There's a small percentage of people that don't make the distinction and it is sad.

Totally enjoyed it. Micronesians / Macronesian Samoans! Too funny bro. Hey main question here.. what do ya call Native Americans / Indians. My grandkids are part Hawaiian / Native American.
@josephKEOarthur6 жыл бұрын
HAPA is the answer.. in our language examples... hapa is half or part Native and part Hawaiian from well over 200 years ago.
@josephKEOarthur6 жыл бұрын
i'd say its still hapa. (some how we have some of the black folks intermarried with the hawaiians) which is all cool. cause way back when... when slavery was illegal.. John Sutter and the goldmine crews took hawaiians as indentured servants from hawaii to california.. to build the sutters fort (in sacramento california) . After a bit of time, Hawaiians didnt like working for the white folks..and escaped into the tribes (creating the Hapa)... and the Hawaiians were all into family and some of the black folk community married into the hawaiians down the line as well . then some black folks married into the native community as well.. cause natives didnt like white folks, hawaiians were down-trodden by white folks, and black folks (even though slavery was illegal) white folks didnt care for them as equals back then. (Except the good irish folks who were cool back then). So yeah Hapa is the answer..
@josephKEOarthur6 жыл бұрын
nah we know it as a word of Pride.. Hapa. we have african american looking folks in our tribe (miwok) that are african, hawaiian, and native american. so its all good. - better still be better i think for someone to call my cousins Hapa rather than Haole.

Thanks for the info. This was actually the most Hawaiian pidgin I'd ever heard. I've been to Oahu and Maui but never really heard some real local talk, so this was enlightening for sure. I'm filipino, so when I visited, I could've easily passed as a local or kama'aina (as some people asked if I was), but once I spoke, it was obvious that I was a mainlander. Question - did some of the labels change? Back in the '90s I'd heard that Filipinos were called _manongs_?
@sanstheskeleton20235 жыл бұрын
leftylimbo I betcha you can find more pidgin the farther out you go. Kaua’i, Mōloka’i, Lāna’i (those two not quite farther than Maui but more rural) and Big Island. Don’t go too far west, or you gonna end up in da Forbidden Island.
