Your guide is Journeyman Falconer Joanne Bentley, a practitioner with fifteen years experience in the handling and schooling of raptors, and her young assistant Leah Danielle, herself a student of the Art intent on deepening her understanding of the (at least) 8000+ year-old practice.
With light-hearted humour, and a gentle, informational approach to conveying the techniques of “winning” one’s Feathered-companion into first working with us, then for the eye of the camera, Jo and Leah’s desire is to inspire established and new participants, wildlife enthusiasts, birders, and the wider public to inform and teach humanity about the intangible “living human-heritage” which every one of us may lay claim to through the Art of Falconry.
Thank you for watching!

Oh my goodness, this was one of the most informative videos that I know is going to save me one day! I actually have started to put together a first aid kit for my hawk. I’ve have always kept separate first aid kits for my dogs and my horses, so of course I need one for my bird! (And Pedalyte is in all three..that stuff is amazing! It has saved my “babies” more times than I like to think about). 😁 thank you!!

some a-hole shot a hawk from out of the sky because the hawk was hunting random birds so the bird fell on its wing, and has a broken wing and an injured eye so i took him home and well i've really wanted to do falconry so i think its an opportunity but first i really want to focus on healing it

How do you clean out their crops? I didn’t understand that part
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 жыл бұрын
Hi again Gillian; The technique for flushing out the crop of a diurnal (daytime) hunting bird, like a falcon, or hawk, is often called gastric lavage. its a means of flushing the crop, or (in humans), flushing out the stomach to rid the sick individual of poisons or some other substance which is putrifying (rotting) in the crop, or stomach. Its unpleasant regardless of which side of the equation you're on (whether you're administering, or receiving the treatment), but definitely an effective technique. Think of times you've been sick to your stomach...as unpleasant as it is to go through the experience, after you've rid yourself of what's been making you feel ill, and you've had some cool water, you often feel a hundred times better. With our Feathered ones, by the time they're got to the point they''re unable - themselves - to bring up whatever is making them sick, they're often in a deeply bad way, and need us to step in - quickly. We do lavage to address the removal of the rotting food, then, sometimes, 'gavage' (feeding slurried food directly into their stomach) to give them energy to fight whatever has made them sick. I hope this clarifies...kind of a "yucky" subject, but a necessary discussion. I'll be asking Dr. Collis if there's some way he can walk us through the steps of how its done when we get back down to see him (hopefully in late-May). and I'll get it into a new "veterinary" themed episode. Best, Jo

Is colloidal silver bad for raptors? and if not, I really suggest using it!
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Jo uses and keeps in it in her first aid kit and toolkit. We've used it on Pfeiffer's chest injury and feather lice with various degrees of success. The feather injury gets a dose of colloidal silver after Jo cleans it up, and it's remained bacteria and infection free for over the 6 months that it's taken to heal. He also gets dosed on his hood when we notice a flare-up of an excess of feather lice. Thanks for your question, support and suggestion TheHawkNerd! :) - Leah

I've been looking for those green bath pans. Do you have resources as to where to purchase those?
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 жыл бұрын
Great question Bennett! I believe Jo has had them for many years, they're extra large plant pot saucers that typically go underneath plant pots - super random but it seriously does the trick! I'll ask Jo if she remembers where she got them :) -Leah

Good evening Bennet; Great to hear from you, thanks for stopping in. The green bath-pans came from Canadian Tire's "garden centre" - they're for (you guessed it!) putting under large, potted-plants. The beige-coloured bathpan (if I recollect a-right) was purchased from either Western Sporting or Mike's Falconry. Hope this helps - have a great week. :0) Jo

Great video, Jo! I thought I'd pop in and let you know the tape you're referring to is called 'Friction Tape.' It's most often used to protect exposed wiring from abrasion (say, passing through a rough-cut hole). Home Depot has stock -- Here's a link: www.homedepot.com/p/3M-3-4-in-x-20-ft-Friction-Tape-Black-3407NA-BA-6/202192876 Looking forward to next week's installment...
