I think it looks much better even without the medallion.

His name was Jeremiah Johnson, and they say he wanted to be a mountain man. The story goes that he was a man of proper wit and adventurous spirit, suited to the mountains. Nobody knows whereabouts he come from and don’t seem to matter much. He was a young man and ghosty stories about the tall hills didn’t scare him none. He was looking for a Hawken gun, .50 caliber or better. He settled for a .30, but damn, it was a genuine Hawken, and you couldn’t go no better.

When ordinary hands can possess such an extraordinary instrument, that symbolizes the full measure of human dignity and liberty. That's why those five words issue an irresistible call to us all, and we muster. Heston then paused to pick up a replica of a flintlock long rifle and continued So, as we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!'[ - Charlton Heston, May 20, 2000

I have a TC Cougar it's in way better shape, but my stock is a little darker. I would like to know more about it. But there's not much information on them.

@@freddiecollins9101 There were four versions of TC Hawken. The reg, then the Cougar the Silver Elite and finally the Supreme. The rarest rifle they produced was the Cougar a Special edition of the Hawken a run of 5000 in 1988, another run of 5000 in 1992, who knows how many survived and still exist today out of that 10,000? They get cannibalized and sold piecemeal on E- bay for prices that are insane. How did you get yours?

What's a California Hawken?
@ChacoteOutdoorRecreation Жыл бұрын
The California Hawken. The St. Louis Hawken shop got rolling in the early 1820's. The sturdy, iron-mounted rifles which most of us think of when we hear the word "Hawken" were called "mountain rifles" in their time. Note that the ad by Hawken & Campbell from the January 20, 1855, Missouri Republican, list "Mountain and California rifles made to order, and repairing done on the shortest notice." So, California rifles were made in St. Louis, by the Hawken shop, and they were evidently distinct from the "Mountain Rifles." The term, "Plains Rifle" had not been coined yet, and was apparently not used until into the 1950's.

@@ChacoteOutdoorRecreation interesting. I wonder what distinguished them? Thanks for the info!

. . .ah, okay, found an article and, as I read it, the T/C Hawken rifle does not resemble a true Hawken Mountain rifle, but rather, a California or Dimick rifle. Dimick's have a single key. I kind of remember Hawkens having two keys or wedges.

"California rifle." It is a sturdy, big bored half-stock, similar in many respects to the more familiar Hawken Mountain rifles, but is mounted in brass rather than iron, has that "hook & scroll" triggerguard, and only one barrel key. Otherwise, it is pure Hawken. So, I think this was just a style of rifle that came into vogue in the 1850's, appealing to people who were heading to the Golden State to seek their fortunes, it was the best and most refined Hawken and was the model for the TC Hawken.
