Hawken designs really do remind me of the old SF3D/Maschinen Krueger designs by Yokoyama/Imai/Ichimura. Which's a really good thing. The old Sci-Fi mechanical designs really had way more characters than the ultra-slick run-of-the-mill designs we see so often these days. Retro-Scifi FTW!

It's concept artwork, genius. In the entertainment and gaming industry they need stuff done in a matter of hours and that's one quick way to get it all done. It's not photo manipulation, all they do in this case is sample the values from textures and paint over it.

I would have never fucking guessed that other parts of pictures were used to created concept images like these. Insane. Just insane.

Personally I'm more impressed that Khang Le and John Park are able to draw in public. All the potential attention would likely end up crippling my ability to do any creative work.

Thanks for all the comments guys!! This was a demo that Khang and I did at the wacom booth at comic-con. Unfortunately we only had 45 mins each (note: the mech sketches are not an exact representation of the mech designs in the game). We wanted to show-case just some quickie PS techniques to the fans! Thanks for all the support guys!! The hawken fans makes the studio team want to up the quality in the game!

according to the artist he did it in 45 mins and the league spotlights are done over a period of days working a few hours a day. Rengars art took almost an entire days worth of time according to his spotlight. So I'm sure both can be just as good if given the same time frame.

While it's true that Scott Robertson has been a chief proponent and pioneer in this "kitbashing" style, the concept of kitbashing in concept design has been around much longer than Scott Robertson's techniques. For instance, "greeble" (originating from ILM's work on Star Wars) is essentially this technique, but only using actual parts to construct textural detail on a prop model. But I would definitely agree that in concept design, Robertson's been the biggest one to bring it into popularity.

Really enjoyed watching this. I have a small wacom tablet,I have Sketchbook Express and I am new to all this and have a couple of questions for you. Is everything you did in the video available through Wacom or are you using Photoshop? Did you import the car images and what tool did you use to select the elements? Can I attempt this with only what I have described above? I am hoping to egt to Comicon this Juy 2015, don't have a ticket but will look for you if I can get in. Thanks

These are all Scott Robertson's techniques, not surprising since these are his former students. Even Feng Zhu employs Scott's techniques since he is a former student of Scott as well. Look at Scott Robertson's channel he goes into depth in explaining this technique in real time.

And you suffer from a serious case of Dunning-Kruger's if you think layer art in photoshop is difficult, especially if you think "looking incredible" is the only qualification of good art.

This seriously fucking killed a lot of excitement I've had for this game, which I've been tracking for almost 2 years. Why go learn what engineering and mechanical architecture actually look like so you can create original realism when you can just use photoshop and google image search? Fuck, if I would have known using layers properly and the barest of minimums in creativity and I could have been a successful artist....
