Speechless. Imagine how many mileages he had put down before he could render with ease like this! Crazy...most impressive thing is how much he actually enjoyed it~

The Fresnel effect says that as the angle of reflectivity increases so does the mirror effect. This is why if you're looking straight down into a stream of water you can see through it, but as you look into the distance you see the reflection of trees, the sky, etc. Any part of the mech at a 90 degree angle to the viewer shouldn't be reflective at all and as you get out towards the edges you'll see increasing reflectivity. Just a tip :) Great video!

I love this. The red streaks really helped define the main torso area, before you put the red streaks on the "shoulder pads", the main torso area looked almost like a glass, but the reflected red streaks really set the entire thing its context. Really great job.

One thing that helped me out was imagining rays coming straight out of my eyes and seeing where they would land on the geometry, then imagining where the reflected ray would land on the environment.

Just before you said in the video that you're not coming at these as a teacher but as a student, I was going to say, "These videos are so much more informative and educational than I would have expected otherwise." Regardless of why, it's great to see you learn as well as learn ourselves. I bought a tablet a couple years ago and haven't drawn in just as long. I think I've found motivation to get back on the horse. I am not going to start with a horse.

Have to say thanks for the interesting method, maybe it's just the side of art I've been looking at, or maybe it's just your own personal style, but I love how you've arranged your values and managed to distribute them so well. Awesome work dude, you've earned yourself another subscriber :3

It might be difficult to manipulate it properly, but that does bring up some good potential ways to test things. I will experiment with some variations of that.. might be interesting.

I was sceptical about the spirals, the whole tribal association clashes a little with the rest of the design. But after seeing it on dA, it actually kind of works. I hope you keep doing these videos indefinitely, your work is refreshing and it makes me more enthusiastic about art and illustration. More tech and people I hope.

At first glance when looking at the finish product, I see a translucent cockpit that I'm looking into. But that line going through it, makes it more obvious that it's reflecting it's environment.

They're both great. Theoretically, Photoshop might be more beginner friendly because the brushes are more straight forward. I like Painter for the brush resizing/color selecting/interface controls.... but all of that stuff is personal preference. If you want to mess around with something easy and free: search google for OpenCanvas 1.1 and experiment a bit with that.

you got it right... I designed a similar piece of mech that when it's camouflage is not on, and it's not in a combat situation, it's tiles reflect the surrounding area.... When the mech is in either maintenance or sitting in it's warehouse or armory the tile reflect the lighting the same way. I did this using a silver Christmas ball to get my reflections right, and I did mine totally by hand.....

Is it just the display that makes it look like a round brush or does it actually behave like a round brush? Once again, some of the UI defaults in Painter 12 are awful... go into Edit -> Preferences -> Interface and set the Cursor type to "Brush Ghost" instead of enhanced or whatever the terrible default is.

Its kinda fascinating to see someone work from dark to light. My whole life as an artist people preach that we have to work from light to dark. Whats also fascinating is how your silhouettes look. Is there any logical way you develop them or is it sort of an instinct thing?

Cool design and rendering. It looks awesome and great job reflecting both the environment and the parts of the mech. You might be able to push it more by adding a grungy texture or dirt/dust to make it look more realistic and less perfect.

The only thing awkward about it to me is that the angle of the 'horizon' line (the darkest part in the reflection that you mentioned often) changes angles in the reflection, most obviously in the shoulder pads. I feel like the horizon line would be reflected at the same angle regardless of the angle of the metal surface...? Otherwise, sitting in on your learning process is pretty amazing and helpful!

Excellent work! This looks so much more detailed than your other mech designs! I have a quick question for you. For some reason my corel painter dab for the thick n thin pen is always round, but i like that horizontal "random" look to the default dab, but when I reset the tool it is still round? is yours a custom brush or something?

Not sure if I'm getting this wrong, but it looks like the upper legs should be reflecting more of the ground. Looking at the thumbnail on the right, it seems they are aimed down. Anyway, just a bit of feedback there. Very nice work.

no. it does seem weird, but reflections are always distorted by the shape of the object that is reflecting them. think of a fun house mirror. even more crazy, if you have a chrome ball you can actually see the horizon continue around the surface in a completely unbroken circle. its kind of a mind effer once you observe it. for a very thorough explanation of this find the dvds by scott robertson, they are really excellent.

7:14 "You can go online when your done, and show your balls to all your artsy friends." Mmhmm... Anyways, I freaking love how this came out. Next time you should render scratches into the mech. If it sees any use I can't imagine it being in perfect condition like this. Then again, it could have just barely been made since it's in a warehouse.

Sexy textures! The rendering of the arms didn't really feel as cohesive as the rest of the mech's parts. Maybe the ceiling lights could have been compressed into certain high points of the different planes of the arms, as it seemed to be a bit more complex geometrically? Try looking at some kitchen appliances and seeing how they reflect the environment? I agree that the spirals didn't really fit either, they seemed slapped on. Sick skills dude, I hope to reach your level someday .

this is really awesome, and the main body and shoulders look fantastic and really do reflect your little sphere, but the arms with their long white reflective stripes to me seem very jarring, especially when you threw on the red paint. to me those strips made it look like the metal had been pinched into folds, and i thought that was what you were actually going for until i saw you paint straight over them. maybe it just tricked my eye at first.

Shouldn't the reflection of the environment always be at the same angle, in this case horizontal, no matter what in what angle the reflective shape is? (and for hollow shapes upside down) It looks like it's following the shapes in this piece. (btw I'm commenting just before halfway through the video)
