Hawkins: A Halloween Tale

“Hawkins: A Halloween Tale” is a fan film that takes place in between the original Halloween 1978 and Halloween 2018.
When I saw Halloween 2018 I really liked it, but the characters kept stating that Michael was arrested shortly after the events of the 1978 film and I remember thinking, “Man I wish we could see how that went down.” I also enjoyed the character of Hawkins played by Will Patton, and realized an opportunity to make the story through his perspective and how he went from arresting Michael to then later deciding he made a mistake and should’ve let Loomis kill him.
I meticulously made sure details would match from the original as best as I could to avoid any continuity issues. I tried to use a lot filmmaking techniques from the original(starting with a Steadicam “one take” shot like the opening of the original, the shot over the shoulder of Michael, down to the exact font sizing used for the title and transition cards in the 1978 film) mixed in with my own style.
One of the really fun things is that because the Halloween series is constantly ignoring other films in the franchise and creating new timelines, it’s gives me a lot of material to use from the films that aren’t included within this canon, such as the dialogue from Halloween 4, which fit in so well to make that scene more authentic without reusing dialogue from the original film.
It’s a fan film made with a lot of passion and love for the series, and I hope you guys enjoy it.

Dude I knew by that moody intro that, that was Trent and Ross’s version of Halloween. It really set the mood well. Seeing this after the trilogy is finished is cool. There’s still that weird sense that any and all different versions of Halloween all happen and exist, almost like a pick your own adventure style game. This definitely feels like it fits in there somewhere. Great work.

I like the fact that in the new movie that Hawkins was the only cop who took it all seriously when Michael got out. This shows how traumatized he was as an officer back in 1978 now it's stuck with him just like with Laurie

This and your other fanfilm The Shape were both very well done. Both really captured the spirit of the original Halloween. I liked that you utilized the pov shot at the beginning of this film and played with the shadows for both michael and loomis. Also, brilliant job using donald pleasance voice from Halloween 4. That helped to sell that this was loomis. The guy who played Hawkins did a nice job. He gave the hawkins character another layer that can carry into the 2018 film. I would definitely consider this film apart of the current canon of Halloween.

In Halloween kills I have a feeling that sheriff barker is really gonna hunt Michael even though dr sartain killed Hawkins but barker thinks it was Myers and he wants revenge for killing his best deputy But Michael & sheriff barker meet face to face Laurie distracts him and Michael brutally destroys barker alive

Loved this. Love watching all of your films. What camera did you use? I have always wanted to make films but I can't decide what camera to start with. I can't decide between a DSLR or another camera. Do you have any recommendations for a beginner? The most I can spend is $700. Thanks for any help you can give me. Keep making films. These are awesome!

Jacob Lawrence thanks man! Starting out with some of my earlier videos I used a really cheap camcorder. I never used that for any short films though. Starting out I’d say you can get some really good footage now with smartphones. I only really use IPhone but I bet android is good as well. I’d shoot something really small with your phone and edit it and see if you enjoy doing it(assuming you haven’t made anything before) just to make sure you enjoy doing it before you invest money into it. The camera I use is a Nikon D5100 DSLR with the kit lens and a 35mm lens. It’s somewhat outdated by today’s standards but it works pretty well for what I need. DSLR’s get some great quality but have some downsides. You can only record for about 20 minutes at a time before it stops recording, which can pretty frustrating but it helps you speed up the process. This DSLR was the first I used, but I made dumb sketches in high school which helped me learn things like composition and coverage, and mostly how to edit footage. Just keep making stuff if you enjoy doing it; you’ll learn a ton just from the experience!

Scream Bloody Gore Reviews it’s was installed already in my editing software, (FCPX) and to get the sizing and color correct i overlaid the font over footage from the original to make sure the sizing and everything was the exact same.
