Context: I am a 35 year old 7ft former basketball player. In high school (2005) we were assigned to do a report on an inspirational person. Everyone expected me to talk about Michael Jordan or magic Johnson but I chose Rodney Mullen. Obviously I grew up playing the THPS games and Rodney and his flat ground specials in THPS 2 were just so interesting and different to me. I had watched his "beat the game" video hundreds of times and even brought my Playstation in class to show it to the class. I remember everyone being floored by not only me picking Rodney but also knowing so much about skateboarding and talking about him so passionately. Fast forward to recent years and now knowing how humble and soft spoken he is after being one of if not the most influencial person in skating makes him such a more interesting person to me. He is literally one of kind. Doesn't want to be in the spot light doesn't want recognition or praise. Literally just wants to do what he loves. I love this dude. He is a national treasure in my opinion.

As long as he felt the documentary wasn't about all his accomplishments, but rather to help better the world, through his thoughts, messages and actions. That would be key. Rodney wants the spotlight to be very dim if pointed at him. He's as modest as they come, but truly is a man who makes the world better for so many.

That was so incredible I was glued to my computer screen. Having been in a similar situation at one point though (literally having a gun pointed at my head) I kind of understand what he was going through. It's a surreal experience when you face your own mortality, but in my case I was being robbed and the guy would probably have killed me if I stood up to him. It was still the single scariest moment of my life and one that I've flashed back to many times in the 25 years since.

Mullen is such a rare human, a one of a kind. I first saw him skate when Public Domain hit the skate shops on VHS. I was never a great skater and I gave up many years ago but individuals like Rodney have stayed with me throughout life and following his growth, his evolution not only as a skater but as a human has been a source of unspeakable inspiration in terms of overcoming external and internal challenge. There is a great spiritualism to his being that resonates with me deeply also, maybe because I am not that much younger and the experience of life itself instills, or really should do, an understanding of oneself within the cosmic context of All.

It looks cool and I have respect for you guys but I listened to this interview because I have love for Mr. Mullen and how he is as a human being. I probably have listened to his interview on Impact Theory 30+ times in the past few years. I just put it on and feel more grounded and human after. Seriously Mr. Mullen. His father raised him to believe that anything less than perfect is not good enough, so he's convinced himself that he can't be seen trying, only succeeding. It's such a shame, but you have to respect the way he feels about it. Rodney is arguably the best there is at what he does, but the pressure of living up to the legend that precedes him has got to be so stressful. I love how Rodney os like completely clueless about just how famous and popular he truly is. I think he has sort of an imposter syndrome. He doesn’t really truly grasp just how influ he has been for sooooo many people. Also look at just how excited he is any time they mention one of their friends for the first time. He’s more excited to talk to about anyone else but himself. Dude is a legend and a mystery. He understands the ideal to always leave them wanting more. Then he rides off in the sunset. Such a good cool dude. We love him for all the same reasons everyone loves Keanu. Just good people.

But … there was a time where He was hated on and not considered cool in skateboarding , for a few years Until The 90’s , when He changed The Game . Mad Respect Due Mr John Rodney Mullen Mighty Whitey Mutt You Are Thee Man Thank You Sir ✌️🙏

So stoked you guys put this pod together and this week's was just next level. This could have run 12 hours and not felt like enough. Incredibly compelling, entertaining stuff. Is this where we put in our request for Rodney part 2? I can't be the only one wanting to hear what happened during that night session in Oxnard that Rodney referenced (along with pretty much anything else he would want to discuss). Keep up the fantastic work Tony and Jason, you dudes are the best.

Absolutely the best thing I’ve watched in a long time. I’ve been skating since early 80’s and Mullen is my fav of all time. I remember being blown away when he made the transition to street skating with plan b. The GOAT.

Rodney is the best, so stoked that I was able to meet him. He gave a speech at Gainesville library and there were only about 15 people there. He was just as inspiring as his Ted talks. He signed my Gainesville Green shirt and started laughing when he saw it. Thanks Rodney

i really wish Rodney would put more skate footage out there! He puts too much pressure on himself to always put out better and better stuff. He's waaaay past that now. It's magic every time he skates.

Everyone loves Rodney & Tony, 2 skateboard hall of famers and legends! His brain is just 1 in 8 billion, the tricks he was doing in his prime nobody else was doing and I still see skaters today discovering old tricks by rodney and they struggle to do them. He was ahead of his time and his old skate parts have aged like fine wine

It’s awesome how down to earth Rodney is. And he also has this way with words. He’s so articulate but also so artistic and creative in his expression. Im sure he got a kick as well that they used his words as the title to Tony Hawk’s documentary. He truly is a poet both on and off the streets

Great episode! I met Tony once at a board (snow and skate) show in 1997 in Portland. I was 26 walking through a crowd of 14 year olds and their parents towards him when I stick out this hat for him to sign, he takes it signs it, looks up and takes a step back....I am 6'2 and an athletic 235lbs ....I don't think he expected that.

Dang that hits hard about his parents. I've been playing music for 25 years and my parents have only seen me do it once live on stage. My sister came to one show and my older brother has never seen me play.

Tony: "The parallels of our life and how they intersect was that he went and started doing Ollie grabs on flat Jason: "oh you did that's right" Rodney: "because of you" Jason "you did the ollie indy air because Tony did the ollie indy air" Tony "I went and learned finger flips cause of him, and he learned air walks cause of me" Jason "Nooooooooooooooooooo Mate, Oh shit!!" lmao I would have had the same reaction and never knew how these 2 interacted. I'm an old School BMX rider and skater. I love this interview.,

Thank you guys for this amazing episode! I could listen to Rodney for hours and hours. He has some amazing stories and I'm sure there are so many he hasn't even shared. Damn, if he had a podcast it would be insane. I feel so blessed to have met him and got to watch him skate in person. It was like 1994-95, maybe a few years before that. It was the first time I had seen a Casper Flip and Darkslide and everything he did was mind blowing. -If you met someone like Lebron, who is one of the more popular basketball players of our time, he wouldn't have time to speak to you, he definitely wouldn't sign an autograph or anything like that. Now, there is Rodey Mullen, the creator of modern street skating, one of the best to ever touch a skateboard, basically if there was a section in the dictionary that said "Skate God" - it would be all about Rodney Mullen. So, if you happened to meet Rodney, he would actually find time to speak to you and not only that, he would actually be embarrassed if you asked for an autograph. He's that humble. He is just a great Human Being.

‘79 Del Mar Hester Series. Folmer was skating the deep halfpipe, Wally was doing the orange and yellow tile backyard pool photo shoot, Gelfand (Hollywood , FL) flowed me a board/wheels and Olsen flipped me some 169’s. The keyhole was packed. I could not get a single practice run. The next moment everyone just migrates to the freestyle area to see Rodney skate. McGill (from NPR Florida) was there too. AG brings the Ollie, Rodney took the Ollie to every place he skated, Folmer (BocaRato) was Florida’s Brad Bowman. And then Rodney (one of my groms from Sensation Basin, (Gainesville, FL) blew freestyle and everyone’s mind. Add Mikey’s McTwist. Florida had a huge impact on skating. Add Kelly Slater… pretty impressive. Shout out to Basin locals!!!
