Well NORFOLK still plays this version and as you can see the proper use of dynamics and articulation can breathe life into any arrangement. This is a learned arranging and performing standard at NSU.

Su always had the best version until I wrote it for HU! They were the first band to play this in fall 96. They played it on my school HU, in the Heritage Bowl. I immediately wrote this song for HU after game in which we were the first band in the Meac to play Hay in spring 97 for pep band. It became HU them song which we continue to play in fall 97. Next year, every Meac band was playing it in fall 98 😂😂. I remember first hearing Nsu and A&T play it and knew my arrangement had inspired them both because I had the baritone playing that F encounter to the trombone cords, and also had tubas anx drums start out the groove, then trombones came in with cords next. Then Trumpets and mellos would come in with melody and counter melody! HU should definitely be in this mix!

SU and JSU arranged it, simply to be a crank song. In New Orleans when I was playing, you'd hear it back to back, typically just to see who crank it the loudest lol. But that was a time where all you heard were loud notes, no balance, no articulation and subpar execution.

When i was going to games in the 90s, Hay was primarily an in-game song for JSU to get everybody hype. Same thing for SU, which is why there weren't a lot of moving parts. I agree with your scores. I thought NSUs version stood out because of the creative arrangement

I see NCAT was excluded (I'm biased as an Aggie) BUT our arrangement is different from everyone else's in that we play it immediately following "Neck" and we also feature our Trombone section more....I thought SCSU's version was too slow, but I loved how they sprinkled in Cameo's "Word Up" into the arrangement...

I agree with you score Steven, being from New Orleans and in the band in the early 90s we use to put our drum sections in the front of the band but that started to change in the early 2000s for most bands in New Orleans.

Hay, by Crucial Conflict, came out in Spring 1996. That same year, SU played it by the Fall semester. They played it to the liking of the actual rap tune which made it a hit with the SU crowd and soon the HBCU and High School band crowd. All of the other arrangements are personal interpretations, but the Jukebox has the best version for how the rap goes and how hype it gets you.

Love the song, especially to be played at a celebratory portion of a game with lots of energy. Some of these arrangements sounded more like a song to play as the drives down the field , so groove it instead of hyping it.

Not feeling BCU at all. Usually I like when arrangers include all the details and elements of song, but I just don't think Hay is one of those songs. UAPB used to be bad about that. They would swear their arrangement was best for that reason only. Their(BCU) power rating should have been a 2. I somewhat feel the same about SCSU. Hay is a hype song. There isn't always going to be time for an extended version of a song, and I don't see it as a 5Q song. I like NSU's with the exception of the F-Horns coming in alone. My only issue issue with any of these is will you have the time to play it other than Zero quarter. TSU's almost sounded like a key change when they came back in with the power, but I would like to hear a version of them outside. I'm a little torn between TSU and NSU, but I think I will go with slight edge to TSU or a tie. TSU's band room looks a lot like JSU's Sothern's clip was so short. This isn't the best JSU clip I've heard. I've heard some where you can hear the individual parts a little better. I'm going with JSU, NSU, and TSU on the medal stand
