Hey everyone! Thanks for watching the video! Here are some notes I wish I could go back and add/change: - the OEM 5-spoke 16" wheels (non-TRD 16" wheels) are actually 16x7", not 16x7.5 like the TRD wheels - Shoot for around -12 mm offset when fitting 305 or 315 tires (12 - 12.5" wide) on aftermarket wheels without wheel spacers to clear the UCA (you will probably still need a BMC though)

Just in case anyone is interested: I have the 34x10.5x17 BFG KO2s on the stock FJ wheel and 3”-ish lift. BMC needed. I am re-geared which is why I moved to this size in an attempt to save some fuel. MPG did go up 2+ over the previous MTs but the availability and cost of this size is such that I would not do it again. Already looking forward to my new set of tires! Most likely going back to a 285/70/17

Hey dude, another awesome video. Your info is on point! As an off-road driving instructor and member of the I4WDTA, people are always asking me to help explain tire sizes and gear ratios… etc. I often refer them to your channel. Now from one “expert” to another, I need some of your wisdom. I’m about to re-do suspension and tires on my FJC. As of now, I don’t plan on doing a re gear (maybe). I’m planning on the obligatory 285/70R17, either in the BFG KM3 or a Firestone Destination MT2 as I can get a decent deal on either of these. I like the idea of the 255/85R17 like you’ve done but alas, the two aforementioned tire companies don’t offer that size ( that I’ve seen). I currently run 295/70R17 on my taco and it’s re-geared to 4.56:1. It also has about 800+ extra pounds on it. With this gear ratio I’m close to original shift points and crawl / highway speeds relative to RPM. To the point… do you think I can get away with 295/70R17 on my FJC with out a re-gear? I don’t plan on going crazy with accessories or a big overland build. I know It’ll feel a little less peppy and braking distance will increase, CVs will be more vulnerable… etc. Thanks for your time. I know it’s a ton of work producing those amazing videos. That’s why I don’t do it. I’m just too lazy. Oh yeah, I suppose I could just swap out my taco wheels/tires on my FJC for a week and get some data but again, I’m lazy.

Thanks a ton! Yeah as I mention in this video lots of folks love the 295s on their FJs and most people don’t regear until you get to 35s, so I would recommend just sticking with factory gearing with the 33s! Swapping tires sounds like a fun idea though 👌

Did you end up with the MT2's? I have a set on my 2500HD in 295/70-17 and they currently have 64k miles on them. The snow is flying here in Iowa and they still have enough tread to use safely. I'm thinking of using the this same size MT2 on my newly (today!) purchased FJ.

oh, one more thing: gas milage. If you are going to be overlanding mostly, more than a 33 is going to kill your gas mileage/ km. so as cool as bigger tires are, they do not add that much more capability relative to range. I overland in the Patagonia mostly, and gas stations can sometimes be a long way in between (if they have gas).

Would you consider creating content on Load Range or Load index choices for tires on the FJ? For example: I currently have stock wheels and stock tire size BFG KO2 in Load Range E (265/70/R17). There is limited AT and MT tire availability in my country. Currently I have access to KO2s in 285/65R17s but in Load Range C. Here in the West Coast of Saudi Arabia we overland through lava fields with lots of sharp rocks. Hence the preference for thicker side walls. My alternatives are to stay with the stock size for the higher load ranges, but with different AT manufacturers like Cooper, Hankook, Nexen or Kenda. Thanks for all the great content.

I recommend a D load or an E load generally. But I ran 315/70R17s that were C once, so it depends on what qualities your desiring from your tires. E will have a stronger and stiffer sidewall, more durable for off-roading and better handling for additional weight on your rig.

Hi - bought a used 2007 low milage FJ. It has a 3 inch lift, Falken Wildpeaks 285/70/17 on Pro Comp Prodigy 17/9/-6 wheels. I replaced the aftermarket UCAs with Light Racing SPCs. All 5 of the Prodigy wheels are peeling paint and I need a replacement. I really liked the look of the Prodigy’s wheel width with the Wild Peaks but need to move on - paint peeling is a common problem with them. I’ve tried TRD Rims in the past and they look ok but the +5mm offset and 7.5 inch with make the FJ look benign. I don’t believe 17" TRD Rims come any wider with offset less than +5. Is this correct? Is there an off-road wheel similar to the prodigy's dimensions that you could recommend - something that can accommodate the TRD wheel cap would be a plus. Would adding Spidertrax spacers to a set of TRD wheels be a viable option? Excellent site - really appreciate your help!

@fjx2000 productions do you know what bumper is on the black fj at 22:38 in this video?
@FJX2000_Productions2 жыл бұрын
As far as I know it is a completely custom one with a little bit of the OEM bumper left over. They cut most of the bumper away and made it more low profile by adding a bash plate to make it like a pre-runner style bumper.

When adjusting caster to avoid the body mounts, how does that compare to oem/ stock settings, and how does that work in conjunction with a lift? Lifts cause a loss in caster and a resultant loss of steering stability. Just wondering if the caster forward adjustment negatively impact the on road steering stability.

A little off topic but I want to know what your opinion of the spare tire cover is. Mine got dinged up and I have it patched with duct tape I'm tempted to just remove it entirely but will this damage my camera?
@FJX2000_Productions Жыл бұрын
I think your camera will be fine without the cover. The cover mostly protects the tire and wheel itself from weathering in the sun and elements. But I rotate my spare in so I've never had a cover and haven't worried, but I don't have a camera myself.

@FJX2000_Productions2 жыл бұрын
I would be sure to check the frame for rusting as that is an issue some FJs suffer from, you want that frame to be nice and solid. Other then that I would just make sure it has all the features you like and that it looks clean and solid overall. Especially the engine bay for possible fender bulges.
@fidelbuitron40002 жыл бұрын
And as far as the high mileage ? You think I can still get good life out of it or should I go for something with a bit less ?
@FJX2000_Productions2 жыл бұрын
@@fidelbuitron4000 I would personally go for something less, 300k is pretty high and you don’t see many FJs being bought or sold with that much mileage so I assume there’s a reason for that

Interior fender bulge. 300,000 miles on an FJ is actually not that much. lots of guys on the FJ forum are 600,000+; but, it all depends on the maintenance history. price of course is deciding factor. still, I would shop for a 2010+. they fixed the fender bulge, and increased the horse power. they fixed a bunch of other odds and ends too from the first generation.

Maybe I missed it but you don't comment on C vs E load. MT website shows mostly all BB-AT in E. Only a few D's. No C's. I've read E's are overkill. True?
@FJX2000_Productions2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I’ve run anywhere from C to E load ranges and haven’t noticed too much of a difference. I’ve heard that the D is perfect for the FJ but C and E work fine from my experience. Maybe that would be different depending on if you tow or not though

@@FJX2000_Productions what i understand is that running E-rated tires at FJ (Inside door) recommended pressures (approx 32lbs) will damage them over time. I don't know if that's true. But E-rated tires are supposed to be run at higher pressures.

Very good video and explanations, I do have in mine 285/70/17 with original wheels and I am willing to add a body lift of 1 1/2 to 2 inch only to get at least more space just for 295/70/17 or maybe 305/70/17 with same shocks which already have for an extra extension of 2", after seen your full 5 star training, my question are: Due to the fact I dont want to get in modifying shocks and original springs trying to keep same soft ride, I will like to use the following option kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2WQk5ego5p9fMUsi=bf1Y3dP39DQqahFh . There is no need to regear with 35”s if 6M/T. The overall gear ratio is still higher than A/T with stock 32” tires.
@FJX2000_Productions2 жыл бұрын
21:47 Though you don't "have" to regear with 35s, it is still recommended, regardless of if you have an auto or manual transmission. The autos have a 3.73 ratio while manuals have a 3.91, so I slight improvement with manuals yes. But an upgrade to 4.56 or 4.88 will certainly make a noticeable difference with either type of FJ.
@ToyotaLandCruiser2 жыл бұрын
@@FJX2000_Productions The overdrive is the biggest difference, 0.716 in auto, 0.799 in manual. 0.716x3.727=2.67, 0.799x3.909=3.12, means 17% difference. If you regear auto to 4.56 = 0.716x4.56=3.26, then we are within 5% with stock manual gearing.
@ToyotaLandCruiser2 жыл бұрын
I do not recommend with manual transmission. Otherwise too high rpms = more consumption. I even tow 4500 lbs caravan trailer on 6th gear, stock ratio and 315/70R17 tires.
@Skruteas2 жыл бұрын
4.30 gears are the best bet but you cannot get them for the 8.2. And I do think you need to regear if you load up the truck at all. You must be in 2nd gear on the redline to tow a 4500lb trailer. I need 4.5k RPM to climb a hill with 4 people and cooler on 35s MT. Regear tomorrow.
@Skruteas2 жыл бұрын
Also 2100RPM or 2400 RPM in 6th is negligible for fuel economy and if you are lugging at 2100RPM you are using more fuel than 85% load at 2400. The only fuel saving you can do in the FJ is to drive slower and reduce your air resistance - which will also lower your RPM.

Putting bigger tires on a vehicle is all good but Don't do it correctly very rarely does anyone do it correctly If you'd going to do it do it right And that is changing the gear ratio to compensate for the taller tires People always brag about putting bigger tires on there but they don't say I'm too lazy to change the gear ratio
