The longevity of these boards in the FF is amazing. In my old one I used FCs V2’s, which were better than my Reactors even though I can’t see any difference. Once I got H4’s I don’t change them from 1ft to overhead beachies or reef. Seeing your review I’m going to put in my MR Twinnie+trailer set, that looks fun. It doesn’t like chop, but other than that it’s a wave catching machine, & I found if I have my foot right back on the block you can really light it up. Really nice low soft rails engage beautifully.

That's awesome. Graig was a grom & learned to surf at my local break. (a river mouth in Port Elizabeth South Africa) his dad Rodney taught me Surf lifesaving. Both legends in their sport. I been shaping my own boards for a few years & I take your reviews Noel & shape my take on them. I've done 2 different hypto styles & they both fly. & a cymatic. Super fun. Both boards handle from small waves to punchy jbay. (note. I'm not out to be the n next best shaper in comp to HS or FW) I do it to help the head space relax & understand boards better.

That is so dope! I’m returning to surfing at 31 after a 10 year hiatus and JUST grabbed a Hypto as the first board I transition back down to short boards on. I grew up surfing and homeschooled my last few years of highschool so I could spend my winters on the Northshore of Oahu with my friends (I’m from town). I developed an opioid addiction after an injury at Backdoor, I strayed away from my friends and surfing. I’m now 7 years sober and im finally coming out of the bubble I’ve lived in for the last 10 years. I was a surf instructor in Waiks from 2012-2015 but the passion and desire wasn’t there so the only surfing I was doing was riding a single wave in on an 11 foot soft top at the end of each lesson. The only enjoyment I was getting from surfing was through seeing my students massive smiles riding their first waves and didn’t have the desire to go and actually surf real waves on a shortboard at my home breaks (Kewalos and Bowls). Surfing was always a part of my identity and I havent felt like myself for a long time. I’m longing to get barreled again and I know once I get the vision again, the fire will be lit again. I don’t even have to make it out, doesn’t need to be a standup 3+ second barrel, I just need that vision and the sound in my brain again… Hearing about how you’ve found the passion for surfing at 35 gives me hope that I can reignite my passion at 31 so Thankyou for sharing, it means a lot to this stranger. 👊🏾🌊🌊👊🏾

@@ncncam23 You're right. Since my comment, I've been riding a more 'performance" type board and my turns are more tight, precise and dynamic. The Hypto got me through an intermediate period of surfing where I really needed to learn by getting a bunch of waves, but now that I'm out in the water more (with more experience under my belt) I can still get the same amount of waves with more performance on less liters.

I’m 44 years old 5’8 and 74 kg. I did surfed the Hypto in all kind of conditions from barrelling double overhead to knee high. And I do 100% agree with the fins recommendations. On big surf I do feel comfy with the HS large trustee. Below shoulder high, I switch the rear fin with a stabiliser and it works magic. Thanks mate for the confirmation

is it a good choice for heavy, sucky waves?
@mattclem382
@mattclem382 2 жыл бұрын
@@SanookDap totally, it makes the take off sooo easy compared to any other board I've ridden. It somehow sucks to the face of the wave on the drop and propels down the wave face. It almost feels like the board is doing all the work and you're along for the ride. And then it's so fast down the line especially when waves are hollow and quick. It's almost impossible to pearl or catch a rail. I think the secret is Hayden's rolled vee entry. I don't see other boards with that. I gained so much confidence in heavy sketchy waves on the hypto. I'm 5'10 and 67 kilos and ride the 5'6 at 28.3 liters. I tried the 5'8 at 31 liters and I felt like I got held up in the lip with the extra volume and it was much more difficult to go vertical with the extra length. I really want to try the 5'4 at the 2&3/8 thickness, I think I'd get even more performance with the shorter length. But I improved so much on the 5'6. Currently I'm hooked on the TOMO Evo at 5'0 23 liters, which feels amazing, but the hypto is smoother rail to rail and take off is wayy easier when it's big and heavy. Tomo just has an extra level of spark off the bottom turn and the top that is exciting. But if I was going to surf drunk I'd choose the hypto!

There's a reason why it's one of the most popular boards in the world. Can be ridden short or long depending on age / ability and wave type. For me it's like having training wheels and I ride it 6'4" when ive been out of the water and lost fitness. Hayden has said it's supposed to be ridden as a thruster and only added 5 fin option reluctantly because people kept asking for it. I don't like it as 2+1 when riding the 6'4", it needs a swallow tail in that confuguration but I bet it works well when ridden much shorter.

Best board I've ever had and I've had many. My favorite set up is CI twin with trailer, followed by the Ando fins when waves get bigger. From outer banks barrels , to small blown out local beach break, to overhead Mexican points. This board is always my best option. Funny thing is, i also had the honor of riding Craig's 5'4 about 5 years ago in Carolina Beach. Ironically, i didnt like it as much as my 5'4 (mine is the one with less volume, like Noel's). At 155 lbs, i just couldn't engage the rails of Craig's, while mine would engage perfectly. Craig's almost felt like it was too high in the water, i even had a hard time catching waves, as the board would stay above the lip and not part water enough to let me in the wave. I didn't have that problem with the lesser volume one. Either way, so glad to see both boards reviewed, especially liked seeing the twin with trailer option which is a less common way of riding the hypto. This is in my opinion, the best surfboard ever made. Mine is about 5 years old and going super strong, although pretty yellowed out. I'm riding that thing until it breaks, then going right back and getting another one. Thank you, this review has been a long time coming!

@@chrisoneill1991 i love the ghost. It surfs like the hypto a bit, but at 6' vs. my 5'4 hypto, it has more drive, but also more swing weight. It does allow me to get in a good bit earlier than the hypto, helping make sections and drops when it's big. I have also surfed it in waist high days and it was surprisingly good off the top. Similar to the hypto, with the forward wide point, just about 20 percent slower on transitioning from bottom turn to top turn and less snappy, although more powerful. I'd say the ghost is more of a hypto step up then the actual Hayden hypto step up. Def recommend it, especially as an addition to the hypto for a good two board quiver!

Good job Noel! Surprised you didn’t mention quad rears placement. Hayden puts them much closer to the stringer then anyone else I know. Feels like this gives his boards (all quads I tried, not just Hypto) the stability and ease of turn initiation of a thruster without the added drag of the center fin. Hypto is also unbelievable good with asym setup (best I found for myself is AM twin on the toe side and HS side and quad rear on the heel side)

Thanks Noel! Hope you get to ride more Hayden's boards, like relatively new Loot, that seems to combine the fishy nose of the Hypto with the diamond tail of the Plunder. I find the way Hayden places quad rears gives his boards really unique feel. While most (if not all) other shapers place rears closer to the rail, which to me makes those boards feel like more stable twins, Hayden's boards, with rears much closer to the center line, feel more like faster and more playful thrusters.

@@vladzhibak678 how do you think the machado seaside quads would run on the Hypto?
@vladzhibak678
@vladzhibak678 3 жыл бұрын
@@nduich , for sure. I’d expect it to be rather stiff though, as Machado sides are quite big, almost as big as some other twins are; plus they are solid fiberglass. I like Machado rear quads though, as they’re small and have flat foils, thus IMHO perfectly complement large sides (my favorite combo is FCS large H4 and Machado rears). I haven’t actually ridden Hypto with Machado quads, as my Hypto has futures boxes and I only have FCS II Machado quad rears, but out of all fin combos I tried on my Hypto it seems to be working best with smaller side fins and larger rears (like HS rears or 4.15 QD), as it already has a pretty long rail line and doesn’t need much fin surface for control. That’s also the reason I prefer AM twin in my asym setup, as it’s more upright and has shorter base than, let’s say T1, which helps a bit with turning, while still giving enough lift and drive.

Hello Noel, your assumption of having to have your front foot foward is not swing weight or volume, but dynamic lift caused by surface distribution. Even thow it is a 5´4´´ a lot of surface is on front part of a forward wide point board meaning, it´s lift is generated more forward of board. There is something like a physical general point of lift in a board which can be calculated. To be able to flatten the board- to create speed by reducing drag caused by angle of attack of waterflow- you have to have your front foot in front of general point of lift, meaning front foot more forward, like on Hypto Krypto more forward because of area forward. Largest lift is create mainly by angle of attack of waterflow, this is why rocker is the most important factor in a shape, and too much makes the board slow due to massive drag/ressistance. 2. largest source of lift is dynamic lift by surface area, which creates also drag due to friction but not as much as angle of attack, this is why surfboard ends are tappered, to reduce lift at the ends making control of lift possible by placing general point of lift always between your feet. 3. source of lift is volume/bouyancy, but this is minimal lift in comparision to lift of angle of attack or even surface area. Think of a waterski, kiteboard or skimboard, these have virtually no bouyancy but will lift you up onto waters surface easily when a certain speed is obtained. The Ando board had more volume, but the volume seems to be moved also more to rails making boxier ones. Once again more surface area- in rails vertical area- give more lift/float helping you with speed generating and smoothness in waves, especially weaker/smaller ones. Hope this text is understundable, because i´m not a native english speaker. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Noel, A much anticipated review and well worth the wait.. You looked great on that board even though you weren't going vertical.. Was that due to the waves or the board I wonder? Either way it looked fast and flowing.. Beautiful footage. Better to go with the 5 fin or the three box model? I know Hayden likes it as a thruster and the twin +1 looked loose and fun. I was just wondering how the different placement of the front fins felt on the 5 fin vs. the thruster setup? Could you feel anything difference there. It's only an 1/8 of an inch but you never know how that could change things. The added fin boxes could change the flex as well. Just wondering which you preferred or would recommend (3 or 5)? p.s. I too would like to see you on the Evo or even his newer version of that board. Maybe talk to Tomo and see if you could get both. They are different construction and slightly different dims.. Take care Noel.. and thank you fore the Surfskate Tutorials.. I'm getting better and I'm hoping to trek to the coast soon and see how it translates.

Good review . I thought it was a bit challenging to turn. But I got too much volume. It’s great when the waves are large and perfect but it’s also not a groveled at all. . I surf mostly junky beach break waves too often. Noel is a way better surfer than me and he got more performance out of it. I am a intermediate. I like the holy grail a good deal more - easier to maneuver but I got over 2 liters less volume on the holy grail and so it’s not apples to apples. Never surfed any 5 fins on it though

I have both models, the one with three fins and the one with five fins, and I prefer the model with three fins. I can't determine why, maybe because the five-fin model weighs more, I don't know if it's because it has five pockets or because it has more resin as a whole and because, in addition to all that, it's painted blue. My first of three fins is not painted. I feel like the 5 fin surfboard is the clumsy brother of the 3 fin surfboard, even with the heavy use I've given the 3 fin board over the years. It's as if the five fin board was about to take off but didn't. I usually use two fins, and exceptionally I put the rear one, or failing that, instead of using three fins, I use two FK2 to draw long turns with great stability. Definitely, I would always stay with the original hypto crypto, with only three fins and lighter, more explosive, easier to do whatever comes to mind.

I have been surfing my hypto for a couple years now. I love the board, but as I switch between that and my summer short boards, I am starting to realize how much less maneuverability I have with the hypto. I am running a quad setup, but after watching your video, I just bought a set of the MR twin fins + trailer FCS II fins to try and liven the board up. You ran the Akila Aipa twin fins + trailer and loved it, do you think I will get a similar effect running the MR twin fins + trailer? Hey Noel, I asked you before about your opinion on fcs 2 fins for my old hypto and you recommended me the MR fins which felt amazing. Sadly accidents happened and it’s out of commission. Anyways I got another 5’6 hypto but good ol future fin boxes. Friend had a pair of twin + trailer captain co panda fins. Do you think these fins will work well with the board? 5’6 hypto and I am 5’10 at 175lbs. I usually surf 28 liters. The catch is, this board will also be used by my gf who’s 135lbs. No need for a stomp pad on this board, #rawdogornahdawg… A lot of people hate on the hypto but I absolutely love mine. The future flex is very strong too. I can’t believe how well it performs on steep punchy beach breaks. I think the board loves a 6-8 foot beach break or reef break… it takes Late drops, and has excellent paddle power. I did noticed it doesn’t like too do top to bottom surfing (aggressive surfing) But It is fits my style of long carves and flying down the line. If you watch Craig’s hypto video, he isn’t really doing aggressive turns. He does very long pumps and generates speed, and then he does a sweet elongated turn. I think that’s why it’s my favorite board, but then again.. I’m not an aggressive surfer.

@@charlesnetzler2262 Because it's built start to finish in a factory in Thailand (like Firewire). Outsourcing the manufacturing is cost effective and helped him build a huge brand at scale, but surfing is unique in having equipment hand built by surfers for surfers. We like that connection with surfer board builders. Hayden lost some of that credibility and artistry by opting for a Thai factory. Doesn't mean the boards don't work great, as this review shows.
