Thanks for the review! A few things to note, we launched the Hypto Krypto it in 2007, Craig Anderson was first marketed riding the board in his Quiksilver Moments campaign in 2012 and we don't use pop out (moulded) production techniques, we actually build each board in Thailand in the same processes and materials as we do in our custom factory in Mona Vale, Australia 🤙

I rode the my dads hydro krypto it was amazing. So I got one in my size in Christmas and it’s the best board I’ve ever had. Feels so good and alive. Also extremely responsive. Put your back foot on the tail pad feels like a performance short board. But if you adjust you back foot slightly higher than the tail pad feels like a twin fin. If haven’t rode this board. I would highly highly recommend it. 🌟

Great review, nice to have a reviewer giving pros and cons! Most people believe giving the cons are bad advertise for the brand but no! Brands have lots of different models and when you have a full review with both aspects you can maybe go for a similar model with a different configuration. It's better to be educated on the real performance of the board than to get one, be disappointed and never buy anything else from that particular brand. Feedback: I'm 5'9, 70kg and surfed 5'4, 5'6 and 5'8 Hyptos. I would say that the 5'6 feels like the right one for me (in FF). I believe the 5'8 or even a 6'0 would be great as a short-performance-midlength if that exists, in PU. In FF 5'8 or above feels too much volume for my height/weight.

nice vid man! :) I am from the Netherlands and am surfing a 6'0 lib tech puddle jumper HP right now. Here the waves are a bit sloppy and around 1m most of the time and I found that I was using my 7'0 old NSP(simple but trusty beginner hardtop) more often because I am getting frustrated of missing waves to much. I also surfed a 6'0 catch skipper softtop which I really liked and shredded till it was leaking everywhere. I did like my puddle jumper HP in stronger bigger waves in spain and marocco. So I am a beginner - intermediate looking for a fun shortboard to learn on in sloppy dutch waves would the new JJF Funformance Gremlin or Astrofish be a great option for me? or are there better option? Fun, wave count and learning to make my own speed on a shortboard are my top 3 priorities.
@StokedForTravel
@StokedForTravel 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Eva, glad you liked the video! Hmmmm tough one on the next choice of board! I’ve been testing out the JJF board (6’0 Gremlin, review coming soon!) and they’re really good fun and built solidly, much more so than the MF Softboards. I would say the Astro Fish is probably more what you’re after performance wise. The only downside to the JJF range is the price tag! The other option if you loved your NSP would be a shorter option in their range too, my friend had the fish and loved it! Let me know which you decide on! 🤙

@@StokedForTravel nice! I can't find a lot of reviews on them so cool to hear you will be making one, are you looking to make a review/comparison on the gremlin and astrofish or just the gremlin. My choice is on the jjf for sure but I am still (over)thinking if I should get the gremlin which has gotten good reviews and should still be easy enough or the fish which I could find no reviews of and should in theory be a bit more forgiving haha
@StokedForTravel
@StokedForTravel 3 жыл бұрын
@@evadoes5820 indeed it should be live next week hopefully, just finished filming it today! At the moment I've only ridden the Gremlin, however I think the Astro-Fish would be more performance orientated with that outline and quad fin setup. It'll be faster for sure, but obviously handle much differently from the wider, thruster setup of the Gremlin. If you're looking for forgiving I think the Gremlin would be the better of the two :)

Hello Chris, nice video , which one of all these surfboard mentioned has the best power paddle, I’m 85 kg and 185 tall , I find myself struggling paddling so I am looking for a surfboard easy to paddle with a flatter rocket,so which one would suit me ? Thanks and keep doing such a good videos .
@StokedForTravel
@StokedForTravel 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Carlos! Hmmm paddle power does depend on a few things - rocker is one as you correctly pointed out, but length also has a big influence too, so an option which requires a longer length to volume ration would in theory be a bit easier to paddle as well. And then of course is your fitness as well - which is a case of practice practice practice! Personally I found both the Hypto and Puddle Jumper really easy to paddle despite the lack of length, but the Dominator 2 is also super easy to paddle into waves as well. In all honesty, they should all be pretty similar and it's going to be more down to selecting the right length/volume for your skill level and paddle strength too.Let me know which one you go for!

@@tonyduron5570 I did buy one yet I am still with my old and full of dents 6.6 with 38 L volume. Which I can catch medium size waves but as soon as I pop up the board doesn’t ride for a long time so it is definitely a buoyancy issue. The Summer is coming so I will definitely will go for a 7 or longer board with a low rocket and a 50+ Litres or there about. So it is basically your weight and skill level vs board buoyancy .

I am 5'9 and weigh 150 LBs. I have a 5'10 hypto krypto. My only regret about the board is not going smaller. I could easily be riding a 5'6 hypto. In my opinion the board shreds. I have heard people complain about their boards breaking but mine is fine and I take some stupid drops on solid shore breaks. I personally don't use a stomp pad. I have a 5 fin set up and regret that. You will never need a quad set up for it. The only condition my board does not excell in is a super choppy water. It is like a pin ball machine in the chopz. Key points -takes super steep drops -duck dives like a champ -paddle power is unmatched Sick vid brah.

@d-dog2106
@d-dog2106 3 жыл бұрын
Hell yea man, excellent content! I have ridden it as a quad fin set up on 8 foot + days... Like i said, i believe the quad is not really needed on the hypto. I have actually took it out on a 10-14 foot day as a quad set up and it works better as a tri-fin (personal opinion). But even on bigger days, i feel like the thruster is perfect because it allows for more turning capabilities while making puming down the line effortless. I also noticed that the quad setup up does not increase my speed, it just makes the board more stiff and harder to pump down the line. The quad set up also made it a little bit more challenging to have fun in the pocket of smaller waves. One of my favorite features about the hypto as a thruster is that you can drive the heel on the middle fin and make the board do whatever you want. However, that feeling was lost when i had it as a quad set up. But then again, maybe this is because i am riding a 5'10? I wonder if the quads make a big difference on a 5'4 or a 5'6. Craig ando did say the board was designed to be ridden way smaller than your standard short board I will be buying a 5'6 thruster in the future!

Glad it helped! Sunday wise that’s a slightly different board all together with the fin setups it offers. As a slightly longer single fin with sidebites it could be a solid option, it works really well as a twin fin as well, but that’s not a fin setup I’d really recommend at your stage in progression. If you want to go down that route though it certainly has plenty of stability and paddle power 😊

Great review despite the fact that maybe you’ve never got the magic from Hypto. I believe you can’t see the magic of this board on a 5.11”size. There is a fine tuning the board asks for and that depends on the ratio size board/size wave. This board makes magic. Been surfing a Hypto for years and disagree with your comment about them not turning well. Yes, they are so fast it is tempting to cruise, but of you get it on the rail and push you can do super hard turns. I've surfed it in very solid conditions in a range of waves and I surf it in practically everything now from double OH reefs to chest high beaches. There is a lot of volume so maybe you surfed one that was too big?

Fair play Chris, stoked to hear it’s working well for you. I guess a lot of it comes down to the way people surf individually too, but for me it didn’t feel like it wanted to be surfed like that and in comparison to other boards I’ve tested and have even more so. It certainly seems like this board divides a lot of opinion hey?!

I am on my 3rd Hypto and believe I will always have this board in my quiver, hands down my favourite board. I must agree Chris, the board turns great and I have had some of my best sessions the past few years on it. I way the same as weights as the gent in the review and think the reason for his not being able to turn the board it is way over volume, at 5’11 for a guy who weights less than 80 kg’s that’s wild, I went from a 5”8 to a 5”9 this year and I surf with a full suit & booties in Cape Town, he won’t be doing many turns on that over sized board. The fact that he ends with “alternative/better boards” makes me feel there is an agenda. The Hypto rocks, order with plenty of volume, but it’s supposed to be surfed a few inches shorter than your standard board in order to get the result HS was aiming for.

No worries, hopefully it helped! One other thing I forgot to mention is that aside from the Dominator all the other boards mentioned are a good chunk of change cheaper too! If you're riding up to head high waves at the moment I'd say the Puddle Jumper HP is a great transitional board for turns and dropping lower, with the Dominator 2 as the next step from there 🤙

@@Nordic_Hell I haven't personally surfed the Phantom yet (review in the works) but from the dims and outline and some input from a friend who has one - it's certainly going to have a solid amount of performance and be a good transition for those pushing their turns. Ando isn’t a top to bottom surfer. It’s just not really how he likes to surfs mate. I’ve had two hyptos now and I see them in the water everyday and heaps of people surf the. Top to bottom. They just take some getting used to if you’re used to a standard performance board. Front foot placement is key with it when surfing top to bottom. Front foot needs to be a touch further forward then usual.

If I was going surf drunk, I would choose the hypto every time. The rails on the nose never catch. Speed and ease rail to rail is unmatched. I think the criticisms of this board are voiced more strongly then the actual performance downsides because it is so popular. It is a little slower to go vertical, because of the widepoint forward. Dan Mann's spitfire, is snappier in the lip because of the wide point further back. But the hypto's smoothness rail to rail is superior. Any doubts on the performance check out Jake Kelly's video "4min on a 5'4 hypto" or something like that. Insane.

hahaha absolutely loved your opening statement Matt 😂 Indeed for a lot of experienced surfers the popularity of the board is almost a negative in itself so I agree that its almost a victim of its own success in that way. @@StokedForTravel I'm also enjoying the spitfire and the Evo. My spitfire and hypto are both 5'6, same dims and liters which has been cool to see how the placement of wide point affects the ride. Spitfire is snappier, but the hypto has that good feeling glide and user friendliness. I was thinking of making a video on the subject, so I was stoked to see yours. My current quiver is the seaside for small stuff and the Evo/spitfire when it's a little bigger. If I had to pick one board for everything it would be a tough choice between the spitfire and hypto. I want to try the dom2 of course!

@@mattclem382 indeed there are lots of elements that can make a big difference to how the board rides even if the main measurements (size and litres) are same same. I haven't ridden the Spitfire myself but sounds like a fun option too. Definitely make a video - I'd be keen to check it out!
