I must say I really put Mozart as THE greatest composer of piano concertos of the period. However - this work is simply superb. A work of a master, the slow movement is especially breathtaking as wonderfully perfomed by Argerich

This is an example of where Haydn was influenced by Mozart

@@loganfruchtman953 Absolutely incorrect and misleading. 1. This concerto (c.1780) was written before Mozart and Haydn met (c.1783). 2. Haydn before they met, knew next to nothing about Mozart nor his music. 3. Apart from CPE Bach, Haydn was ‘influenced’ by virtually nobody. 4. Et cetera.

Really! Anyone knows by whom is it composed? Armonically it is very recent.

The cadenza was composed by Wanda Landowska (1879-1959). It’s indicated in the info about the recording...

The orchestra can't really match MA's verve (not that it's their fault)...wonder what this could have been had she been accompanied by a more daring ensemble (I'm thinking specifically of the fire-breathing Berliners, although by 1993 their Klang had definitely been weakened by Abbado...but Levine was still coaxing Karajan-worthy performances out of them in the late 80's- early 90's so who knows?)...there are some moments where I don't think they're answering her with the same depth and intensity in the outer movements. Not their fault so much as an impossible challenge to keep pace with an artist who was blazing and with such spontaneity too. Still, a brilliant performance. More of a statement of how transcendent and powerful Martha Argerich could be than an indictment of the Wurttembergers, who play sweetly and with tight ensemble. She just sets this concerto aflame - wow. And credit where it's due: the JF and the Wurttembergers DO manage to match Martha for tone, subtlety and intense feeling in the heavenly adagio. Magnifique! And the Adagio, with the wonderful Landowska cadenza...a thing of rare beauty. Kudos to DG for the sound here - they nailed it. Great resonance and detail on that Steinway. Again - WOW! Definitely not another Haydn Great D Major out there like this one. And love how little Martha seems to care for "period practice" - she's just out to do glory and honor to this immortal music and she succeeds. In art, can there be a higher purpose?
