Hayes reacts as Maple Leafs set to start season without injured Woll

Let's not panic ... Sure, the point that Stolarz has never started 40-50 games can be spun in a way to make it seem that he's not supposed to be a regular starter in this league. However, for the Ducks, he was paired with John Gibson (6.4 mil annual cap hit), who was guaranteed 50+ starts (56 in 2021-22). For the Panthers he was paired with Bobrovsky (10 mil cap hit), who was guaranteed 50+ starts (58 in 2023-24). In other words, Stolarz--even with a NHL career avg .920 save % --was never going to get a chance to be a regular starter in those situations. Now it appears he'll get that chance. Is there no reason for optimism here?

As a Leafs fan you're absolutely right. stolarz is 30 and ro me has been much more impressive than Woll. But neither are guys I can say yes we're good in net. Hilliby or whatever his name is maybe he can be the guy but I dont know much about him. Other teams are catching up to the Leafs and that's just a fact. They made samsonov and Murray work. The leafs have a lot of offensive support and it helps their goalies become good players as far as the regular season goes. I imagine even if the leafs have to go back to Murray or hildeby one of these guys will get a 9.12 save percentage and a winning record by the end of the year
