about the privacy: you go to the public sauna voluntarily and in full knowledge, that you will be as naked as everyone else. In being there you gave your consent to being seen naked. If you don't want that, don't go to the public sauna. If however someone has access to your webcam, they can spy on you without your consent. And there you have it: consent makes all the difference. Greetings from Hannover, Germany.
@Daneelro13 күн бұрын
And access to your web camera without consent is much more frequent than people think. In addition to those valid points, on a broader level, it’s not a matter of fear, there‘s just simple risk management at play here: Your risk of something happening is the likelihood of the event times the worst possible damage. So, the damage may depend on what an attacker can see through your camera (e.g. in what states of undress you may be in front of your computer, we‘ve all got those scam mails.) The likelihood may be low (though not as low as you may think.) So, you may conclude, your individual risk is not very high. And then you think about how much it costs to eliminate the risk or at least mitigate it. If the cost is really high, you may decide it’s not worth the effort for a low risk. But the thing here is, the effort is very very low. It hardly costs anything to eliminate the risk. Now, if you do video calls 90% of the time you’re on the computer and if you don’t have a camera slider, you may consider the effort too high to put the tape on and off all the time to protect those 10% of the time you REALLY want the camera off. But most people I know are not like that. For them the tape is a really cheap way to eliminate a risk you just don’t need to live with. (And btw., do I feel like basic risk assessment should be taught to every kid in schools? Absolutely!!!)

Well, I mean, personally, I see the sense in putting tape over your webcam. That’s not paranoia. It’s prudent. It comes down to a matter of _choice._ Sitting, nude, in a sauna is a matter of _choosing_ to be on display, but when you turn off your webcam, you expect _privacy._ That’s why they started making models of computers with a piece you could physically _slide_ across the webcam if you did not want it to be used. It puzzles me that such a feature is not more _standard._ I mean, we _all_ have an expectation of privacy when we’re not deliberately using our webcams and no amount of hacking can move _that._ Just as you don’t want a total stranger to be able to dictate whether you walk around, wearing clothes, in your own _living_ room, you don’t want a total stranger hacking into your _webcam._

Expectation of privacy. That's what it comes down to. It just occurred to me, the same attitude drives having blinds in your window. For number five - the clutter in the pictures on the real estate websites: In my perception - german homes and flats are mostly cleared out of literally everything if somebody is moving. The rooms then are empty - taken over "Besenrein" (cleaned out by broom). Often even previous inhabitants take the whole kitchen with them when they move - because they own it. Or try to sell it to the new renter/owner at a certrain price ("Ablöse"). New owners often start with putting new paint on the walls - and else. Renovating the whole thing. New tiles, new carpets, parquet and else. Moving into a house, or an appartment already fully furbished / designed is very uncommon in Germany. I would guess 95% (or even more) of the new owners, the new renter would bring their own funiture and other stuff while moving. So the most important thing for a real estate is the ground plot of it - and the impression how bright or dark it feels. Everything else would be packed up and moved when the new inhabitants get the keys after signing ...

About Immoscout etc.: Often the apartments are still leased to tenants when you try to find the next tenants. So they just have to take the pictures with furniture and stuff in them. Or for example a few years ago my landlord sold the apartment I live in. Of course he needed pictures, but since I was still living there (and planned on continuing to do so, which fortunately the new owner also wanted), he couldn't expect me to remove everything just for the pictures. Of course I cleaned and tidied up as good as I could, but that's it. So, yeah, my furniture and clutter was on the pictures as well and that's also how interested people looked at the apartment when they came here to look at it in person.

On the cars moving over for emergency vehicles, it's also the rule in the US and 99% of drivers pull over (I've been driving for 45 years in the US) and the difference is that in Germany the penalty is a lot higher than in the US. In the US, in most states it's a fine. In Germany, it's a fine and you loose your license for a month. Thats a huge incentive. The tape on the laptop or PC web cam is very common in the US as well. It's a law to pull over, but it isn't a law to make a passageway between 2 lanes. In the US you are supposed to pull over to the right. Germany you make a passage way by cars pulling off to the left and right. In parts of South Florida they make a passage way. I was sitting at a red light (there was only 2 lanes) and an ambulance was coming. Cars pulled over to the right and left as far as possible. It created a 3rd lane for the ambulance.

This became law in (West) Germany in 1971. But the harsh penalties are a relatively recent phenomena. Until 2017, there was only a Verwarnungsgeld (a lesser kind of fine) of 20 Euro, after that it was raised and categorised as a Bußgeld (a slightly more serious fine) and in 2020 the driving ban was added.

If I remember correctly, most of these photos are of things lying around, mostly of rental apartments. Be it for sale to a new landlord or pictures for new rentals. Remember that the current landlord/manager and a real estate agent have no right to enter the apartment to take such photos without the tenant's consent. An agent is well aware that such chaos can have a deterrent effect. I'm not sure whether the Chaos Computer Club* suggested that additional security can be created by preventing password entries from being spied on via the hacked camera access. *organized hackers who investigate data leaks and other security deficiencies. Oh yes, the entire bedding in the window: as far as I know, this is more of a southern German thing and/or is more likely to be found in rural regions. Emergency lanes are mandatory throughout the EU. In the city, however, it is often narrow due to a lack of space, and the emergency vehicles then drive over oncoming traffic.

I use plastic cards from the charging companies. They can have the info of where, when, and how much I charge but they cannot have the information of what everywhere my phone goes. I learned the airing out of mattresses and linens from my grandmothers who grew up before the age of commercial mattresses. They line dried everything but my mother didn’t. I learned the habit and benefits of line drying things from, in my apartment complex, being surrounded by my Chinese national neighbors. I used to take off shoes in my home but got rigid about everyone else doing it due to my neighbors. I have a little bench by my door with a basket of fresh footies for unprepared visitors. I also got in the indoor/outdoor clothes mindset from them, changing as soon as I get home. I just won’t freak out of someone sits on my made bed with outdoor clothes on. What got me indifferent to nudity was having kids. I grew up with a thoroughly internalized and religiously shame-based model of modesty. After my second child was born and I labored naked in front of my MIL, I didn’t care. Parts is parts. Some people have big parts while others have little parts. For some people it might be very important, to others not even close. And since you usually completely furnish the apartment you are renting yourself (renting with furniture is still the exception) you usually only care about the floor plan, window placements, floor covering etc. when you have a look at these pictures. After talking about German privacy I totally thought you were sneaking in to check Mike's computer without him. Also, in the US, we do tend to have the most massive fire trucks and ambulances in the world. Smaller vehicles would help the Rettungsgasse thing a lot. Like, do we really need a full-on ladder truck to deal with "I've fallen and I can't get up!"??
@jessicaely252113 күн бұрын
Bullshit. You can do it people chose not to. In Downtown Miami FL I was sitting at a red light and a massive ambulance and fire truck was behind the line of traffic (there were only 2 lanes). Cars pulled as far as they could to the left and right as possible. They created a 3rd lane for the vehicles.

Same goes for German real estate with no kitchen in them. No one in the USA is able to imagine this place as a functional, working kitchen when looking at a room devoid of any cabinetry, appliances, etc. Germans (well, most of them, I think) can do exactly that. But I have seen houses in the USA left to be sold with things in them that would be considered "Sperrmüll" over here, or even crazy hoards of stuff and clutter from floor to ceiling. Much, much worse than a kitchen or bathroom on a German real estate page that had been photographed because people still actually live there.
@HayleyAlexis13 күн бұрын

@HayleyAlexis13 күн бұрын
You can, a lot of family members and friends hang their clothes out to dry but I can not in my apartment because of moisture control. I live in a high mold area where excess moisture is the known evil. Our day-time humidity level is Germany's night-time humidity level (humidity is usually higher at night). Also hanging clothing out to dry here can get mold growth if not done properly so it makes no sense.. Plus we have millions of insects that would fly and nest in our laundry.

I wonder why the realtor or landlord doesn’t try to make the place look nice so they get a higher price? Houses here in California are now staged by realtors with all-new furniture and decorations. When we sold my parents’ house it looked nothing like when they lived there. The realtor even advised removing the refrigerator to make the kitchen look bigger.
@HayleyAlexis11 күн бұрын
No... There is no real incentive to do so because someone is most likely going to buy the house with or without the stuff because the inventory is so limited. I believe on the real estate website I looked at in Germany there were about 180,000 homes. In the USA that number is about 1.4 million if I am not mistaken. So even when calculating the population percentage there are still more homes available in the USA compared to Germany.

When we were buying a house a few years ago we were very put off by the state of some of the houses the realtor took us to look at. Extremely cluttered, with furniture from the 1960ies and untidy kitchens and bedrooms. The realtor explained that this was on purpose to give you an idea how it looks furnished or lived in. Myself, I don’t get it. I would rather look at clean, empty rooms than dirty ones filled with old stuff.
@EvaCornelia11 күн бұрын
As for the clutter in the pictures. It doesn't bother me at all. On the contrary, if I see pictures of an apartment which is actually a home of a family, I can relate much more and it's easier for me to imagine that this could also be a home for me. I can easily imagine this place without the clutter and imagine how I might arrange everything and if I could feel comfortable there. Pictures of homes that look like a furniture store rather turn me off.

There are many adult platforms where are tons of very privat footage of living rooms, bedrooms, children's room's and so on, to get an idea. The 'actors' of course had no clue about. But it comes the day they'll probably find out in a random taxi, where the driver was asking for a selfie because he became a huge fan of them😁.. I think all of these are found in america.... Covering your cams has been a thing since early-mid 2000s. We are legally supposed to also clear the lanes for emergency vehicles, which is punishable by law. So if a cop sees you not yielding for EMS/fire etc. They will pull you over and give you a ticket. And I just find it bizarre that U.S. people always seem to hang out their flags for drying. I really don't want to know that they are doing with them all nicht that they need to be aired so much. The difference in the real estate market is that one does not buy or sell but just rent. And the people who are living in the appartment atm most of the time only have rented it, too, and do not care a bit when their landlord asks them to tidy up for some nice pictures for the future person who will rent the place. They have no benefit of making it nice and shiny, so why should they?

There is a difference between having to give way for emergency vehicles and having to form an emergency corridor whenever traffic slows down to a crawl regardless of the presence of any emergency vehicles and getting fined if you don’t do so even if it just a normal traffic jam. Having a law about this also ensures that everyone knows between which lanes this emergency should be formed and thus enables consistency.

I know it is highly unlikely but I understand why people want to make sure things like that can't happen.
@Vernon196013 күн бұрын
Hayley, with respect to the web cam, there are people all over the planet who can hack your device's camera. For them, it isn't difficult. AND Unfortunately there's people who live to "SEE YOU" With respect to the laundry, the Sun does a wonderful job at freshening laundry... It's MUCH better than a dryer cycle. Articles smell better and are actually CLEANER from the fresh air and sunlight. In some states, not moving out of the way of emergency vehicles can get you substantial fines. I always say, it the vehicle were on its' way to assist you or your loved one, you would want NO ONE to hinder its' progress. There are some places where a police patrol vehicle will follow and emergency vehicle watching for violations.... (it also increases public revenues for the city, county and state!)
@boelwerkr13 күн бұрын
The pictures are "messy" to make them believable, to show that home is "real". When you look at sterile home picture that tells you that this is a real home, ready to rent/buy, you go there and it's nothing like that. The pictures just showed it in the best possible way. One person started it, was successful with it and now everyone does it the same way.

ok privacy again. here we go with my last name on the doorbell , you probably can do nothing excapt knowing where I live. but with other informations combined you can go cracy on my dime. so americans are pretty cool with privacy and getting filmed in public, so it wouldn't be too crazy if someone hacks your webcam and records everything you do in your home, right? ... and mabye uplaods it to some questionable website for others to... let's say.. having fun with it. sure we do go naked in the sauna, but noone there cares and it's a hygene topic because of the swimsuit fabric the wood moulds, and noone wants there to sit on. but beeing recorded in secret and sold is a total different topic and not uncommon, and since there is no light at the laptop cam, covering is the easiest option.

All my mother's family in Germany and a great many of her friends of her generation were know as 'Putzenfrau' (sic) (Putzfrau), who religiously cleaned their homes such that it was always immaculate, so maybe presenting your house 'au naturel' is a reaction to that. I'm not sure which of those I prefer.

I must say I enjoy your videos. Having once lived in a binational relationship myself, I know that looking at the differences can be entertaining (hope that that´s an accurate description). Another difference I just came across when reading about a US politician and business man who has the total of nine children with his wife (they already had 5 own and decided to adopt 5 more in 2010). Sounds sweet. But then, in 2023, the wife filed for divorce. In 2024, a judge ordered that her husband had to stay away from her, because allegedly, when he was visiting her in what had been their family home, he followed her from room to room and refused to leave at night. I of course don´t know whether those allegations were true - I guess they were. But it strikes me that the decision to have that many children had not been based on love and love alone then. Not only Germans, but all Europeans wouldn´t have any sympathy for a couple that would decide whether they want children and if so, how many on the basis of factors divergent from the intactness of the relationship and the wellbeing of the children. Think that´s a legacy of feudal times, when the nobility still married and started families because of all sorts of factors - apart from love? Not in the US of course, but in almost the complete rest of the world. The western countries that once had an aristocracy have not taken their attitudes towards marriage and family from those circles (perhaps the UK is a little bit different, though). Instead, the value systems of the bourgeoisie prevailed - including the focus on romantic love. Is the US different here?

I think covering the web cam is not just a German thing. Nowadays, many laptops even have a builtin cover for the web cam. I'm pretty sure the manufacturers don't do this just because of the German market. And no, you don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to do that. There were actually a lot of cases where people hacked web cams and spied on other people, especially children.

Dear Hayley, I am sorry to have corrected you and I see that you were miffed. However, on my part, it was just a comment on the USA education system, where grammar doesn't seem to be taught anymore. It is just as important in English to speak grammatically correct as in German. Just ask your guy what it's like to hear wrong endings or bad conjugations in German. If you go to school in Germany, grammar is an important part of their language education - in the USA grammar as fallen by the wayside and has become a symptom of the poor K-12 schooling in the States.

I don't think it is a realistic scenario that someone would start watching you through the webcam. There are ways to prevent this, but they are not popular or well-known among most users. My guess is that a phone is a more realistic spying device than a computer. On my old phone, the microphone would sometimes turn on by itself, and I knew this because it occasionally started producing an echo sound on its own. I am also the type of person who avoids installing new apps after purchasing a phone.
@JouMxyzptlk13 күн бұрын
Nice to know that this camera paranoia is German (or maybe Europe) only. Why this is: Several cases where cameras and microphones on smart phones were activated without being visibly activated (i.e. indicator light not on), and used to spy. It actually happened, and was in the news. We may not had a news on that when it comes to Laptops or i simply missed it, but the trust is lost and will never be regained. There is a historic reason on top of this from the DDR time why the paranoia has an actual foundation... And one it is on a webcam it is possibly on the internet :D. You learn that when dealing wit the military too: The webcam of laptops has not just to be deactivated or glued over, it has to be REMOVED. Only a non existing camera, i.e. "See, there is the empty spot where the camera and microphone once was" is actually 100% not recording.
